Just want to add that if you want to improve gas mileage, leave it in gear on decel. This will go into fuel cut, which is better on mileage. If putting in neutral, it will be like idling only at a higher rpm thus using more fuel. The only exception would be if you get a tune that adds "pops and bangs" on decel in gear which does a burst of fuel on the exhaust stroke. It only does it very briefly (or should only!), so it may still be better to leave it in gear.
@bigboy41052 жыл бұрын
Hi Ian you seem to know what you’re talking about and I had installed an IE tune on my Audi and I noticed that those pops and bangs gave me a rich engine. I had a high flow cat and a catback downpipe from cts turbo installed and had no clue why I had that problem after installing the pop and bang tune. Maybe has to due with it being straight piped currently as well. Working on a muffler.

Downshifting to decelerate shouldn't waste extra fuel. The RPMs will go up but fuel cut is engaged. You can verify this with a good scan tool (VW uses VAGCOM which is total balls, though - my scanner that cost me a grand doesn't work good with my Beetle). When you downshift and don't gas it (let it coast) the wheels are spinning the engine thru the driveline, not fuel / combustion, it's basically the reverse of power delivery. The compression strokes will help to slow the vehicle down at a consistent rate without using the brakes, a lot like a diesel's engine brake. It's advisable to downshift without worrying about wasted fuel. I've even had times when I lost a master cylinder and was able to drive in the city for a few hours in traffic using only the trans to slow down, and then using the parking brake to engage a stop once below 10mph. Either way, thanks for the video. I haven't seen any reviews of the IE "tune." If the ECU fuel / ignition maps can be reflashed I don't understand why it isn't just reprogrammable to any tune I would like.
