MyKayla you are spot on. There are so many methods of learning and teaching out there. Time in schools should be spent tying to figure out how each student learns best. Just think of the knowledge all students would gain if their educational potential was enhanced by helping them learn the best way to learn for them.

I think college can be a great experience. It does help you make life long friendships. When else are you going to be around so many people your same age. But I think colleges need to give students more guidance in picking courses and majors and in figuring out what they want to do. Often you are just left to your own devices and a lot of courses have no connection to jobs in the real world

Yeah. Making life long friendships is where I have a few regrets as in hindsight I did not figure things out at that time. Guidance wise was tricky too but I got through that smoother.

I know it's hard to finished school when you like working better, but I actually think it's better than it being this other way around. I was great at school and I loved it. However, working full time was a BIG adjustement for me. Thanksfully, I managed it after a few tries and errors (that could have been carreer ending to be honest), but if I hadn't adjusted, it's not just four years we're talking about, working is what you're supposed to do for your whole life. So good on you. You have a good chance to be very successful and happy in your professionnal life.

I struggled to finish my undergraduate degree after experiencing a violent attack on campus in my sophomore year. I transferred to a new university and finished another year of undergrad study, but PTSD was accompanied by crippling depression and anxiety- and I did not finish. Much later, I recognized that my children needed to see me complete my post-secondary education (they watched me struggle to work full time and get a BS, M.Ed., and a CAGS in Educational Administration); and I know that all three of them learned from me that completing the appropriate stages to get to where you want to be in life is a very important thing. You will be grateful that you can demonstrate that important value to your own children.

But what's weird is my memory ahs always been great, but lately for some reason it's bad. I will forget what happened in a movie I just watched a few days earlier sometimes. lol.

Do all of your general education first. That can usually help you figure out what you want to do. Then your major or minor classes. Once you have decided on your major look at careers with your degree and get a job in the field either paid or non paid internships. Also go to a community college first. You can do dual enrollment in highschool and take community college classes at age 15.

@@dunktheball Why wouldn't someone want to take on "harder work" in high school, if they're legitimately college-bound? What college-bound person these days doesn't take AP courses? They makes a person's life so much easier in college (people are better prepared for college work, and can coast through courses more easily -- a huge asset if one wants to go to grad school, and needs a good GPA), and it's much less expensive to pay for an AP class than an entire college course (not to mention paying for less college overall, since AP courses can accelerate one's degree program).

I have a bachelors degree and I have some master courses under my belt as well. I also studied abroad. Overseas, most degrees are earned in 3 years because students don’t have to do Gen Ed classes. As someone who graduated with student debt, I would have LOVED having one less year to pay for. However, from my Gen Ed classes, I decided that my original major was not for me and ended up changing majors as a result. There are pros and cons to both. In the end though, college can be very valuable if you are looking to raise the ranks at an organization, however, the US is so far behind because there are so many free colleges overseas.

I’m just finishing up listening to this episode now and found it so interesting how hospice about how you thought college shouldn’t have general education classes. I live in Australia and University is purely for specialisation for your chosen field. You only study journalism classes for a journalism degree for example. There is no need to still do maths and science. That’s what highschool was for hahahaha it’s always baffled me that American universities still make you study this stuff even though it has absolutely no relation to the degree you’re going after. But then again I know in America you don’t get in on University entrance test scores alone like we do in Australia that you take in year 12. So it’s a very different system, obviously. I guess our entrance test scores help the University to already know you are capable in certain subjects because you got the score that qualified you for a certain degree at that university. Anyway; just fascinating to hear the difference. A basic degree at university in Australia is also only three years as compared to your four. Probably because we don’t have to do the general education classes! 😂

Guess what, that comment "*(8#" doesn't go away in graduate school. "Comment on two of your classmates." As Myk says, "no one reads it." So, true. I have tried three times to get my masters in 30 years and have yet to complete a program. I just retired from teaching high school last year and have given up on earning another degree. My dd (9 days younger than you) and I had season tickets to the U until she graduated high school in 2014. We went to the PAC-12 Championships in 2015 at the Huntsman while she was home for spring break. We were sitting right above Tory Wilson when she was injured; it was awful. I remember screaming at my husband about how unfair it was when you didn't make the 2016 Olympic team. I practically had a bulleted list of why you should have been on the team instead of a specific different person. 🤷‍♀️

@@westonding8953 yeah it was so confusing how she suddenly switched to that. And also I felt like well I'll still be able to do it, but nope... It was quite an experience, full of ups and downs and looking back, you appreciate it more but you wish you handled some things better. Academically, I really don’t think anything can really prepare you for it. It was very intense and I actually appreciate that. However I made some mistakes in hindsight that I wish I could correct. College is great for me and as I near graduation it makes me wish that I had more time in school. I am a non-traditional college student (I started at 24, graduated from community college at 27 then transferred to university, and am graduating at 29). I wish I had at least another year left in school and not a few months until the end of April. the main reason is because i'm really scared to go out into the career world and would like more time to just enjoy the college years without having to stress about the full time job that I know I need to get upon graduation.
