In my experience as a Masters Student. Mostly always used a laptop. Neat, fast, light (compared to binders and notebooks). You never loose anything if it's in the cloud and can access your notes from your cellphone to study anywhere! My hand used to cramp all the time. Also, some note software records at the same time so you can go back to what you typed and hear what the professor said.

thx for the vid, I have not write anything since I graduated for a bachelor degree.and worked for few years. Now I started my master degree and deciding whether i should write or type. Still a difficult choice for me :P

For lecture and text notes I write both by hand. Then I combine them in a study guide via typing. If I have time (and if the course is a higher priority credit), I will rewrite my study guides by hand before the final exam.

I used to compile notes on my laptop using the syllabus, until perfected, as i could chop and change things, than when perfected and concise enough and the notes correlated with the dot point , i would hand write the final notes for memory. what are you're thoughts??

I like to type up a document with headings and sub headings with space to write notes during class. Title + Date: What is Criminology? -Understanding Crime and Crinimals. Heading: 1. Defferentiate btwn crime, deviance, & delinquency. (Leave 2" of blank space. With any definitions on the far right side in smaller text size) Heading: 2. Consensus perspective vs pluralist perspective. (Leave space and so on) I have a scan app on my phone. I take pic of pics from text book. Drop it in DropBox. Then on laptop I take it out of DB and insert it into document. Digrams, tables, graphs. Print that out. If I need more space I flip the paper over, write the corresponding heading number and write away. Usually that is as far as I go. my way takes a bit more effort but my notes are hella nice.

I prefer typing for the reasons you have mentioned. I'm very much a visual learner so the notes have to look good and I also work on my computer for class-work throughout the year. I like adding pictures and diagrams that I find online to make the notes stand out more. However, I do find that I struggle to complete my exams at times (especially the ones with big essay questions) because I write so slowly. Not quite sure how to remedy this :(

@lollerbladezz Yes, a combination is ideal! Often typing is great to get notes organized, and then prior to exams hand-writing is ideal for building memory retention. Thanks re: Nerd Machine shirt :)

I often need to handwrite my notes for things like science and calculus. Things like English, psych, and pretty much all online courses are mosty words.

I think each uses a different part of the brain, but that is IMO. I can listen better to a lecturer if i hand-write as opposed to type. Of course the notes become illegible a week later. Richard Feynman describes this concept and that different people do things differently. If the instructor is drawing graphs vs. talking, i think the results might differ. Really there is a youtube video if you look up: Feynman -Ways of Thinking

According to multiple studies, handwriting is better for memory retention, typing is inefficient in this regard.

Hans Franz Yes, but its harder to write when typing takes a shorter time.

Thanks!! ^_^ I'm writing notes, even though it will take a while, it'd be easier to remember!
