Good idea for a future video: compare how these 3 systems held up after a typhoon or super typhoon given the different roof constructions and orientations of the solar panels.

Whauw James this is good news. All these years i thought James when you get solar you the gadget men hehe. But 10 kw thats is a lot of power. We are also planning to put off grid solar on our house in the PH. I am already study a year with this product. Some Tips and tricks. For example i take two inverters of each 3kw if there is some trouble than always one keeps working so you not without power at all times. Please check the cables and connectors if they have a heat sun HV protection code otherwise in 2 years they will be crackers and will give lots of problems. You know we are in the PH not in the US or Europe😇. check it or ask the installe that he can show you this. Good luck i will be super. Regards Jack for the Netherlands

Great tips my friend! The backup inverter is a great idea. The way I looked at it, I selected an inverter with a great track record and many months/years of in-service validation. A second inverter in storage would be an emergency spare but with a reputable appliance company, sometimes it's just best to replace later on if there is a failure because normally solar technology improves year upon year. This is the reasoning behind not purchasing a second inverter here at Villa Feliz.

@@MyPIDream Probably considered an eyesore. I was working at a hospital in Monterey, CA, starting up a new emergency generator paralleling system. When they installed the gens they didn't want the exhaust system running up the side of the bldg because of esthetics. As a matter of fact they didn't allow contractors to have logos on their vehicles or their clothing. Well my company had brought me in from TX to complete this startup and all I had were company shirts....ugly lime green shirts too. I was working and one of the hosp maint guys came in and told me I couldn't wear the shirts. Of course I said this is all I have and he just repeated himself. So I said ok, I'll get packed up and head back to the airport. Then he went and got the big boss who said it was ok for me to wear them. And yes, I would have left. I could care less that they have movie stars that come to their hosp. When I looked at the gens and spoke to the gen tech we were talking about the exhaust system. They had routed it through the wall and ran it through the patients records room and then up a plenum to the roof. When we ran the gens the joints were leaking and set off the fire alarms. They added seals to the joints and we tried it again. Turns out the joints that were in the air plenums were also leaking hot gasses and there were lots of cables and wiring in those same plenums. Well the job was shut down while they decided what to do. They ended up running the exhaust on the outside of the bldg with decorative covers over them. Yup, esthetics...probably cost them a lot of money for all the extra work. Remember this old word....Chuckleheads!

I just went off-grid in Jamaica with just 800w of panels, 80 amp mppt charge controller, 5,000 w/15.000 watt peak inverter and a 200Ah, 5,120Wh lifepo4 battery, 24 volt system. Small house, one 14.5 cu ft fridge, one 43" TV, a fan and a 900w microwave as main use. As well as all 24 volt LED bulbs wired with low voltage wires. Seems to do well so far, even charges on cloudy rainy days. Still haven't seen what happens if it rains for a week. The charge controller and inverter are overkill for that many panels and battery, but the idea now is that I can upgrade to more panels and batteries. Also have a small generator just in case. I'm very happy with it. The rising cost of electricity as well as constant black outs need to be a thing of the past when there is sunshine!

It’s going to save about a $100 a month in the first few years, more over the following years and thousands over a 20 year contract period. $84 dollars a month for 20 years is a no brainer, with cash back thru government incentives and also the electric company.

Not everyone is in a position to install a solar system on a house, many are just renting. My thoughts were of having a portable system, one that could be set up and taken down in an afternoon if you planned on moving. You might not power your entire place but have something set up to run some of your items like a refrigerator, washer or A/C unit.

@@MyPIDream Not sure that will work on an A/C unit, don't think those can handle the surges those units create. Fridges, fans, washer....those should work ok. I really haven't looked into it all that much, just thought having a small wheeled trailer that held your batteries, inverter etc and allowed your solar panels to be stowed and then easily towed by a trike sounded like an interesting project. But a project that would be set up and used 24 hours a day to pay itself off...such as running an invertor AC system.

I have really been considering going solar at the house we are purchasing especially due to the high cost of electricity. Anxiously awaiting the details video, hoping you include battery composition and capacities, voltage of storage and inverters (12,24,40, 56, 80) etc. I figured when you bought your first inverter a few months back , solar would be on the horizon. I've been researching whats available here for a long time but have not been very impressed compared to the inverters and accompanying electronics needed and batteries compared to US. The prices here are cheaper, the panels here are about the same as US ( considering there almost all chinese) . I've only talked to one person that has solar here, and his install was a huge mess because of there installer. You always seem to pick good quality companies that give you good service so hoping this company does the same. I'll go on and ask, does Go Solar do work on Mindinao? The batteries are a huge part of the expense and quality of the system and I have not seen the type you are using before from the peak I saw of them. Hoping part 2 will be coming soon, you got me very very interested.

A new subscriber. I enjoyed the video. Your air drone photography show a much nice green area. With all the green I have the perception that more building lots might be available. Do you live near a large town or a city for things like shopping - supermarkets and doctors? My take is to build a home with a lower slope. Not knowing your location I do have some concern when I hear you say - volcanic ash and typhoon. Obviously the volcanic ash had to be washed away. Would further volcanic ash create problems with solar damage and a need for frequent pressure washing? Hopefully in a future video you can talk about the costs of the solar systems and their limitations such as powering an air con. Beautiful homes.
@MyPIDream

If we did have another volcanic event and the ash did drop in our area, we would obviously require cleaning of the solar panels and roof. Chances of another event like the one in Jan 2020 are unlikely during our lifetime but you never know.

Hi James! Thank you for giving us all an insight to Solar Panel install. I am very much interested in installing a similar unit at my home in Thailand that is currently being built by my wife's family. This first home there is a small home presently of one bedroom and one bath build. Planning to build on top of the flat roof another bedroom and bath with an open deck on three sides of the addition. My question to you is the residual electricity that these units create. Are they being sold to the grid? Please give some insight to this process and how does the home system able to send electricity in the opposite direction to the power lines. Really not sure how does this works. Love what you and Ness have created there in the Philippines. Absolutely beautiful. I hope my wife and I can create a beautiful property as you have there. Even though our system is a Hybrid Grid-Tied system, we are not activating net-metering here at Villa Feliz. Currently the net-metering office of our local utility company is, from my understanding from other who have tried this relationship, non-user friendly, cumbersome and problematic. My main goal is to reduce our electrical footprint on the grid as well as protection from brownouts. I'll be talking more about this in the episode that addresses technical aspects of solar.

Roof is looking so nice after the jet wash. Hopefully the solar along with the new law allowing 100% foreign ownership of energy companies will stimulate investment in infrastructure and bring the prices down whilst improving the reliability of the distribution network.

Hi James Hi Ness. James in determining the size of your solar system (Kw needed) did you base it on the amount via electric bill consumption reading or based on the wattage tags of all your high consumption items in the home plus 20%....sorry I'm a few days outta sync in my ritual viewing of My favorite channel YOU! Hey James What's the cost per kilo watt hr in your area? Does the rate change on peak time usage and does the rate per kilo watt hr change on higher consumption. If you are grid tied when the grid is being worked on do they ask for your solar system to also shut down so not to back fed the grid and hurt linemen workers. Our furniture is being picked up Aug 1 and it is PI bound!!😀

As of this date our local utility company BATELEC2 is currently P12.2134 per kWh + 12% VAT. I was not aware of any separate charge for higher consumption or time of day rate differences. The licensed electricians install isolation switches that have a mechanical isolation between the inverter and the grid connection similar to using a generator connected to an ATS. This mechanical separation makes it impossible for both sources to be connected at the same time making it safe for utility workers to service lines. Congrats on the shipping!

It is really viable now to have solar panels on roof, i did mine 7 years ago and it is paying for itself... sadly your roof unlike your other neighbour's is not really well designed to take solar panels due to its layout so it will not have similar efficiency then them.
@MyPIDream

Thanks for sharing your experience Rhoel. I agree with you that PV panel performance is increased by having all panels in the same orientation with regard to the sun but newer type PV panels and string inverter technology over the past few years really improve the performance on roofs like ours. I'll talk more about this in part 3 of this 3 part series.

@willydear4906
@willydear4906 2 жыл бұрын
Most of the expats will be in the 50+ age group. If you are looking for expats around your age it will be hard but not impossible. Just remember you are looking at 50 years of retirement and need to find something to pass the time and give purpose. Enjoy your retirement and tell yourself that you are retired and not in a rush when things don't go fast here in the Philippines.
@MyPIDream
@MyPIDream 2 жыл бұрын
Retirement is usually base on the ability to sustain your lifestyle for your remaining years alive, so age is not a factor when making that decision. If you've been fortunate to have saved and have a retirement income for your remaining years, then that is the time to determine if you wish to retire.

Hi James, about the global gas prices and electric, has a lot to do with the Ukraine and Russian war, Russia does not have much to trade with but what it has a lot of is gas, but since Europe, America and the middle east have given Russia heavy sanctions, this is then the outcome of the high gas n electric prices. Anyway Ukraine is beating the shit out of the Russians though, even though the Russians gains land every meter they occupy hundreds of humans loose their lives, young lads ofcourse, so let`s pray everyday for this idiotic war to end asap for all of us...

Hello, there James I’ve been a long time subscriber since 2019, I had a question about your solar. Does the Philippines have a year to date true up charge like the US does that’s usually due at end of the first full year of solar use?

As our system in not off-grid nor supplying electricity to the grid (net metering) so this is no additional charges from our utility company as we are seen still as a normal client.

I noticed that the inverter is more powerful than the solar panels installed. That means the inverter is not working 100% of its potential as the overall production of solar is less and will not really go 100%.
@MyPIDream
@MyPIDream 2 жыл бұрын
The inverter is rated at 10.4kWh. The panels collectively have the theoretical max output of 9.9kWh. This is a perfectly balanced system.

@@MyPIDream Hi! Thanks for replying on my comment. Don't get me wrong... I love your contents and watching a lot of your videos lately. My comment above was based on my personal experience and looking at your home solar installation I found some few issues. Please allow me to mention them. First and most disturbing one was the installation of your PV2 String. It orientated in 3 different directions. I'm not sure if you are using micro inverter (I guess not) and if not it will completely degrade the performance of that string. Not to mention the angle of the panels which I completely understand the intricate design of your roof limits the best angle for your solar install. This basically limit the overall generation of your PV1 and PV2 as opposed to what your Inverter can handle. IMHO, your solar panels may not able to generate 9.9kW even at full sun so the 10.4kW inverter is overkill for this situation and a 7kW Inverter with optimizer or micro inverter could have been a more efficient solution. Second issue I noticed was the exposed conduit piping - the sun will degrade this conduit overtime right before your solar panel start to degrade. The best solution for this in my opinion is to go inside the ceiling using a proper mounting hole with silicone to avoid water ingest. My solar setup is only 5kW inverter with 18x 365watts (6.6kW) solar panel on East and West string configuration. By the way, glad to see you are using Solar Water heater (Solahart) in the Philippines. Nice one... Looking forward for more content. Subscribed!
