With me being now 24 I realized this at the end of 2023 for me. Mainly because of you and this channel. I trained basically every muscle like this. But after switching to the controlled style my weights may dropped like crazy but I have a waaaaay better mind muscle connection, way better pumps and I just the realized how much my f#cking joints were actually hurting. It is less impressive to the casual dude but I realized aint nobody in the streets sees my PRs, they see my muscles. Should only really do heavier lifts on the big compound lifts for max 4-5 sets. Like for example 5 reps x 5 sets for bench Squats 4-6 reps x 4 - 5 sets Deadlifts 4-6 reps 4 - 5 sets Same thing with over head press, rows, Dips etc. I've seen people do lateral raises with a rep range of 4-6 which I think is extremely dangerous. Those smaller muscles I'd hit with higher rep ranges while the bigger muscles with heavier, than once I've done heavier on the bigger muscles (4-6sets) lighten the weight up and do 8 - 12reps

@imdark737211 ай бұрын
@@Tad1945 seems decent, but personally i think there are way too many exercises in total and too much variation. That's gonna get hard to track progress instead of one single program that you do 3 times a week with maybe some variation on the back exercises (A vertical pull instead of a horizontal pull), or legs (squats, or leg press). If it's a full body i wouldn't do more than a exercise per muscle group, something like this: - Squats (or leg press every other workout) - Incline Dumbbell press (or barbell, whatever you prefer) - Barbell rows (do lat pulldowns or pull ups every other workout) - Romanian deadlift (or leg curls, the same thing with every other workout if you want) - A curl variation (dumbbell, cable) - Tricep extension variation (rope or bar pushdowns) - Lateral raises This is just my opinion, but getting better at a single exercise and tracking its progress will be a lot easier when starting than doing a bunch of exercises

I do more bodybuilding style workouts for 6 - 8 months but then I like to switch to 5x5s on the big lifts for a couple of months and then peak it out for a couple weeks before switching back. Sometimes I focus on strongman style workouts just to keep it interesting. At 50 years old I'm really strong and healthy. Going light for sets of 20 forever would be a terrible way to live.
@jamesTWisco11 ай бұрын
@drewyoung2102 100% agree. I wasted time in the gym for years inconsistently pushing light weight (except bench press). That was until I found Starting Strength and I pushed all my weights up to real numbers. That's when the real progress started and that transfered to all of my lifts. Anytime Fitness for me and I believe I'm the strongest mf'er that goes there at 50 years old. Mostly I workout at home though.

@drewyoung2102 This kind of statement is like the worst kind of statement. Bodybuilders should be doing sets the way that provides them the best SFR, often 2-0 RIR, that yield the results they are seeking. This arbitrary 275 bench sets to failure is exactly that, arbitrary.

His muscles were built in a way that made me think they were gonna jump off and hurt me. Don't know his full routine, but I told him I bench 160 for 5, he told me there's no reason to go that heavy. And that philosophy clearly worked for him.

Bodybuilding is not powerlifting and is not strenght training although variety is good I do feel that incorporsting some sets of stenght training more.like 5 reps sets would not be harmfull. But training only for one rep max or 3 to 5 reps it a defenelty not optimal for hypertrophy. It is also individual and contextual. For me It doesnt make sens lifting heavy for exampel at lateral raises who tf is dping 5 reps on dumbell lateral raises. Who tf does for hypertrophy dumbell biceps curls for 3 reps it s just not seem right. As long as it s challenging enough for the muscle it doesnt matter that much that are 5 reps.or 20 reps. My guess is stay in between is the best approach or not going into extreme just stay in the rane feel comfortable. I am pretty damn sure that if you re only doing 3 to 5 reps per exerxise for hypertrophy it s not optimal as samse as is the other extreme for example dping only realy high reps light nload like 30 reps per set is also not optimal.

It’s weird, after over a decade of training, I question the use of deadlifts, heavy standing overhead presses along with a few others in my bodybuilding training I never thought it would come to this, especially after my powerlifting background but here I am Heck, even barbell squads are on the chopping block at times, choosing better SFR movements instead for my goals As I advance further, it feels I am using a scaple instead of a sludge hammer and I dunno how I feel about it yet

Being an early intermediate is so fun,I'm a freshman in college and training for the whole of last year was so fun,I just ate and trained like a strong caveman and gained like 7 kilos of muscle

I approve these comments from Dr. Mike. I have now transitioned to that next level where I relax and think about my form more than the weights.

Lol Ronnie Coleman the guy that had so many injuries. He can’t really walk very well anymore. That’s who you’re using as a example.😂😂

Dropping the weight on my barbell bent over row and controlling the concentric and eccentric has made all the difference for my SFR

Very important view imho. People very easily forget the psychological aspects while "optimizing" the rest

my thought process is basically, lift as heavy as you can while maintaining decent form and pausing at the bottom of most reps, cheers from Sweden dr Mike

I've recently started doing one of John McCallum's programs incorporating breathing squats, behind the neck presses and stuff like that and it feels fucking amazing. Shit's awesome to cycle in every few months or so, keeps the spirit high and blows up my quads like nothing

I found that working up to a set of 5 reps, going heavy, then take 2 AMRAP sets at going backwards the weights used, is really the best lf both worlds for me currently... So lets say bench 100 kg Bar, bar, 20 per side, 30, 40 (working set), then AMRAP 30 and 20. Gives me the pump, the movement and the fun
@frankwhite848011 ай бұрын
I'm definitely going to give this a go! I'm basically just doing 5x5 on all compounds apart from deadlifts, but what you said sounds really good 👍

Could you maybe do a updated video on herniated discs? I've been struggling with pain since May 2022 without any luck of improvement. I'm nearing my point of choosing surgery, but with all the sources recommending to NOT do that, I'm really biased and unsure what to choose...
