I have lived in Canada 42 years and am planning to leave in a couple of years at the most. I am a dual citizen and plan to move to Portugal where I was born. This is a beautiful country with some amazing people but it has declined so much. I know that you are comparing the crime rate in Canada to countries with a lot more crime or civil unrest but to me the increasing rate of crime is alarming and I am not talking about petty thefts. There is a huge mental health crisis and we now have thousands of people living on the streets and people being attacked and killed on transit and in the streets. When every time I walk out of my home I see someone suffering it breaks my heart and makes me not want to go anywhere, add to that the insane increase in the cost of living and the deplorable health care system and what do we have left. This is no life. There are basic human rights and needs required to have a functioning society and our infrastructure is crumbling at this point(affordable housing, transportation, healthcare, safety). I would not recommend anyone move to Canada at this point unless where you are coming from is much worse.

The reasons not to move to Canada apply to the US. Not only the health system is broken, but it's ridiculously expensive and many times your health insurance doesn't cover treatments and prescriptions. Rent is another issue, it has been very expensive lately and crime is getting worse

I haven't decided my destiny yet but salaries in Portugal suck. I'm from Spain and is very similar, that's why all Portuguese immigrate to America and even Canada. The ideal thing would be getting a remote job in Canada and then work from Spain

I am living in Lebanon. The situation is awful here. If someone stole your right there is no government to restore your right and punish your aggressor. @@ThisisYulia I want a nice and peaceful country with clean environment in addition to law and order. Also efficient health care system is important. I think Switzerland has these qualities bur their emigration system is very hard and complex. I don't get worried about finding jobs as I will be a freelancer soon and digital nomad so I can work anywhere I can with my laptop as long as there are good internet service. I think both Portugal and Spain are fine as they have friendly people & wonderful natural sceneries & safe countries & acceptable health care system and easier immigration rules in comparison to countries like the US and Switzerland that has the most difficult immigration rules in the world. I guess the main challenge of Portugal and Spain is bureaucracy

Canadian healthcare is not very efficient, so bye-bye Canada. Portugal is great but if you wanna live in Lisbon / Porto, the rent is crazy high. if you choose to live outside of those cities, you won't need a lot of money. as for bureaucracy, it's not that bad in Portugal: we renewed our residency cards in 3 clicks (they didn't ask us for any information). at the same time, it took my husband 1.5 years to get his driver's license exchanged while I got mine in a month or less. hope this helps!

If you are planning to move to Canada and live alone in a 1-bedroom apartment: forget it, the cost of rentals is more than you will make from your job, even as a high-tech workers. On the other hand, if you are okay living in a 2-bedroom apartment, and sharing your apartment with 7 other roommates (total of 8 people), then you just might be able to afford to live in Canada and be able to save up a bit of money each month. An alternative to renting a crazy-expensive Canadian apartment is to buy a small work-van and convert it into a small apartment on wheels for around $30,000. So live in that 8-person / 2-bedroom apartment for $6 years, saving up $500 per month, and then buy the van for $20,000 and turn it into an apartment for another $10,000 and then live in that van rent-free after that. More and more Canadians are doing exactly that right now.

Hello, Yulia, and everybody. I’m moving to Canada on a work permit soon. Going to Calgary. What can I say, I am “excited,”(never been so close to coming to Canada before) but all the apocalyptic news (and the comments here) are freaking me out. I’m gonna be working and living alone, through customer service. I’m gonna be needing to rent a one bedroom apartment. Yeah. This also scares me (and it shouldn’t). Can a person who works on customer service make it in Canada (or particularly, in Alberta) right now? Also, this “no rent control” going on in the province of Alberta, really concerns me. It’s like, I haven’t even moved to Canada, and I’m already struggling. Anyone reading this, please, tell me what you think (or what you know). I’m bilingual (I speak English and Spanish) if this matters. Living in Canada is my dream, but sadly, I happen to be coming at a very difficult time. There is so much uncertainty. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks! 🙏🍁

If you are a NURSE, YES, there are LOTS of opportunities for you, if you are a International Medical Graduate you will face YEARS, THOUSANDS of $$ ad probably will NEVER have a chance to practice here... YES. there are NO doctors, but they DO NOT WANT US, because the doctors don't want competition, specially from better educated ones. I have a GP because I have a condition and they made it faster for me, but she is SO SO SO BAD, she knows so little that embarasses me as a GP of a 3rd world country. I actually need to bring my own diagnosis orelse she is ALWAYS clueless. My friend has a problem for FOUR years, she has a GP, and her GP is STILL searching for the all wrong conditions. In ONE conversation I figured out what she had, she suggested it to her GP, they tested and "tah dah", she is now in treatment and getting better... You are right Julia; DONT COME TO CANADA if you have a medical condition, and pray to one never happen here, you'll probably die of it :(

I quit the idea of going to Canada since Mr. Turd-eau menace people with raising the carbon tax and he had the support from the third party in the house of Commons. Then, the government just raise the financial base for students and temporary workers twice. Then, I left that possibility. Now I'm trying to learn German. And I'm scared because I feel that I wasted my time about Canada, specially living in one of the most dangerous countries in the world without being at war. first of all, I never said “no crime”. I said there is crime but it’s nothing compared to other countries. as for drug addicts, it really depends on the city. Toronto and Vancouver has a lot of them while Montreal and Ottawa are fine (at least from what I saw back in June). again, I do agree with your points but please bare in mind that people are moving to Canada from much worse & dangerous places. peace!
