OHP is really the manliest of lifts, it’s not “fun” for a reason but impressive for sure

Overhead press is probably the exercise I feel most powerful in, something about just lifting the weight above your head feels amazing haha. That said, shoulder injuries have plagued my lifting career so I've mostly avoided heavy OHP over the last few years.

I got my OHP to 135x3 at 147 body weight over 8 months. I had no visible shoulder development, though I felt really strong at pressing. I stopped OHP and switched to seated dumbbell. Within 3-4 training sessions, I was able to discover my mind muscle connection and flex my shoulder as an individual muscle (which is something I had never done before). Last time I tried to OHP for funsies, I struggled with 105 for 1 rep and ended up just dumbbell pressing. I wish it had worked for me because I enjoyed the exercise, It just felt unrewarding and also I felt bad taking a squat rack at my small gym to OHP.

As a bodybuilder I’ve been doing light OHPs and squeezing very hard and nothing makes me feel my shoulders more or creates that level of soreness. U think it’s worth switching to dumbbells?

I like the OHP even if it was kinda useless I would like it. I am not a pro-lifter however. I just go to the gym do some barbell stuff. It's probably more psychology than anything else but it makes me feel good and strong. when I first started going to the gym I was really scared to lift the barbell over my head, because I had that image of being too weak and getting a head or back injury. It took some courage and quite some time before I even tried OHP. I like that it's a movement that I usually don't overdo, so in the long run it turned out to have a relatively low-injury risk. I push myself, but I don't go for weights that I don't know I can do comfortably, which...with squats or deadlift I am more willing to go close to failure. OHP also doesn't make me as useless the next days after training due to soreness...I can still do sh...stuff afterwards and work.

I think OHP is important for powerlfiters. Only if we care about maintaining the ability to go overhead. Don’t even have to go that heavy
