Hey buddy, another notable difference between chrome and veg tan is that chrome tends to be softer and stretches more easily, so belts and straps and the like really benefit from being made out of veg tan

Aussie saddlemaker here. I can tell from the photos, the rivetted belt maker has not been formally trained in making leather products. The buckle is loose - undesirable, the rivets should be closer to the buckle to reduce the looseness, and there should be two rivets - one at each side of the strap. The riveted belt has the keeper too far from the buckle, bridle making principles - the keeper should be close to the buckle, the reason is it minimises the strap bulging out between the buckle and the keeper. Chrome tan leather stretches and not a good leather for making belts. Shoe and boot uppers are usually made of chrome tan. Chrome Tan can be done in a day, where as veg tanning can take months. When making belts, I stick with high quality veg tan leather. Very long lasting, good for 25 years plus. I have two belts I made in the 1990s which I traded for new belts two years ago, and they still had lots of life left in them. Prices - a basic veg tan leather belt should be priced under $100. a retail price of around $75 is more realistic. The English bridle leather mentioned by the vid presenter is excellent, brands such as Sedgwick or J&FJ Baker in Devon England fantastic leather and very nice to work with from my point of view. Baker is the last remaining tannery in England still using oak bark, and the manager told me there has been a tannery there since Roman occupation of England! The rattle noise is from the roller. When fitted, that noise should be absent due to pressure on the roller. Rollers are old technology and were invented for straps being done up every day to stop wear on the buckle on harness and bridles with working horses such as horses in draught - such as cab drivers and farm horses. I hope this info is of some use. Thanks for reading my comment. From a saddlemaker of forty years - and still learning! Thank you to the presenter for educating the viewers.

I really like the belts from Nohma leather. They cost about $35 for an Amish made veg tan belt. They are by far the best deal out there in my opinion.

Haha, stuff like that belt is why I'm glad to be a leatherworker. I could make that same belt for maybe $40 of raw materials, manufacturers can buy in bulk so it's more like $20 for them in materials. Buy from an artesian and you will get much better value.

Tanner goods belt is only a little more expensive than belt from say Popov leather. But I would get Tanner Goods one because its design is more refined, Popov one is more rugged. Besides, the main big difference is that Tanner Goods one has beautiful dyed, waxed, burnished edges that adds to the refinement. I really like the English Bridle leather on my Tanner Goods Universal Zip Wallet, slight waxy and pronounce character. Gonna get their classic belt next! Right now using Uniqlo belt, and they are great quality at such a low price. Theirs are I think full grain leather from Italy, probably chrome tan since it is soft. Pronounce grain and creases too, what you get for such a low price is unbelievable.

I’ve had a Tanner Goods belt that I’ve worn every day ( every day) for the past three years and it’s great. I got the natural leather version which has faded and patina’d pretty dope over that time and it hasn’t stretched at all. Recommended
@TheIronSnail4 жыл бұрын
Good to know! Still keeps its shape pretty well?
@rubberlover6664 жыл бұрын
@@TheIronSnail oh yeah. Still true to size and none of the holes have ripped. It took a minute for the belt to patina and I felt weird wearing it because it was almost light pink when it was brand new but the eventual uneven fading was worth it. I personally do admire the sick fades of the belt from time to time!
@TheIronSnail4 жыл бұрын
I think I’ll get a natural one soon!
@rubberlover6664 жыл бұрын
@@TheIronSnail I got their billfold wallet in natural at the same time too which patina'd much faster thanks to my greasy hands always touching it, and that encouraged me to keep wearing the belt. There's also ways to speed up the process if you get impatient.

I have had the Tanner Goods Classic Belt for 4 years now, IMHO better design than the Standard, but same leather. I have to say it is by far the best belt I have ever owned and I am pretty confident it will last me a good portion of my life. I bought it on sale so I got it for $85 and even that is a bit steep, but given the longevity, leather/hardware quality, and the fact that it is made in the USA, I think it can be justified.

How was the sizing for this belt for you? I was thinking of getting this exact belt and Tanner Goods recommends going up a size from your normal pants size. I'm a 30 in jeans, so I was gonna get a 32 (they don't have odd numbered sizing). I dunno if that's what worked for you, but would appreciate your input.

make your own belt from a tandy leather blank for $18. I replaced my tanner goods belts this way; belt's are not made to last a few years, and $100+ for a simple veg tan belt, in hindsight, is laughable
