Should you play Insurgency Sandstorm in 2024? No. Play this older game instead.

You may like Insurgency: Sandstorm. You may think its better than previous iterations. You may not even KNOW about the previous iterations. If that is your situation, than I have a wonderful game that you should play. It is also called Insurgency, but this time there is no sandstorm occurring. Actually I don’t think there are sandstorms in any of these games. If you're looking for sandstorms, you're in the wrong spot. If you are looking for intense, high stakes, fast paced, immersive, close quarters, modern infantry combat gameplay, then you’ve gotta get yourself a copy of the original Insurgency.
I thought it might just be a nostalgia thing, but I just spent a number of hours playing both of them back to back, and I had WAY more fun playing the 2014 release, and in this video I will explain why. Honestly, I’m wondering if we keep going back to the 2008 Insurgency source mod if it would be more fun than the 2014 release. By the end we’re just going to be playing Half Life 1.
I joke, but not really. I started this entire channel to find people who want to revive these old games with me, and having an Insurgency 2008 game night is 10000% on the agenda. There is something about these old source games that overshadows the nice graphics of these newer games. I miss those days of spending hours in these lobbies, and I’m hoping one day to host gaming days of old multiplayer gems.

One of the reasons why I play coop mainly. If you still want PVP, Sandstorm is honestly the way to go. In the US, the only server available in the OG Insurgency is a crappy COD one.

Day of infamy is probably my personal favorite multiplayer game, the fact you could disable the radiomans capability by shooting the radio so he can't call strikes in, the flamethrower leaking fuel if it's shot and eventually catches you on fire if you use it after, to the MG42 just ripping rounds, by far one of the most underrated games of our time, shame the servers are all dead

Honestly the things i missed about OG insurgency are the "commander" class and his voicelines, the more grittier artstyle, and the fact that grenadier could carry like 8 grenades (unbalanced af yes, but it was fun, especially in PvE), and also the amount of mods there were too. Apart from those, i still much heavily prefer to play Sandstorm as the base-game improvements and changes ultimately make it more fun of a game for me to play and enjoy, both PvP and Co-Op, but still a valid video and points here regardless

Sandstorm had some update like an half a year ago where they increased the amount of grenades which you could carry for launchers but it was quickly removed and returned to the average of 2 launcher grenades with heavy carrier. For a moment i was excited that they increased it, because it made the demo class alot more playable, because now you were able to actually customise your weapons while having some grenades on you with the light carrier. And then they removed it, they removed like the best update they had going on for a long time. Every update since then have been pretty much completely useless. The new update introducing grenade launchers taking a equipment slot was totally pointless. If you equip the grenade launcher into equipment slot, you cant equip rpg anymore. It costs the same amount of supply as underbarrel grenade launcher, and now you arent able to even have a rpg to go with it, so there is absolutely no point using them, unless you want a grip for your rifle AND grenade launcher. They could have atleast made the amount of grenades more plentiful for it, or then on the other hand made the grenade launcher the main weapon or something, which would have made playing the demo class alot more interesting, since now you wouldnt have a main weapon such as rifle on and you'd have to rely on your teammates covering you and using pistols in a tight spot. If you play demo, then you would want to have as much explosives as possible. 1 Grenades for launcher that costs 3 points? Unless you spend additional 2 on carrier so you get a mind blowing amount of 2 grenades. I dont even think its a balance issue to give the demo class more grenades but hey im not a dev, just a player with 1000 hours in the game so what the fuck do i know. As much as i love sandstorm, i dont know what the fuck the devs are doing. It took them like a year to fix the defusal game mode connection issues, the team balance is still an issue regarding the dispersity of how experienced players can gather on the opposite team against complete noobs, and there is still some connection issues within the game servers causing package loss and lag. They also managed to break the bipods in the last update somehow, so now you might have to struggle mounting the pibods on flat ground with mg, and that causes alot of unnecessary deaths when you struggle to do so in fast paced enemy encounters. Sorry if this seems ranting, but i just feel like the devs only update the game so they can introduce new cosmetics for players to buy.

@@DewaKrishna_ Yeah, the underbarrel is faster to switch to, you get to carry an rpg and you save an additional equpment slot for any grenade you might pick up from dead enemies or teammates. The only upside is that if you die with it your friends can pick it up and use it, but the 3 supply point RPG is far more superior and does the exact same anyway. If it had more grenades or would cost less supply id be okay with it. By every measure it's nothing but a handicap for what demo class already has. In general i think the devs had alot of opportunities to make the gameplay more fun. Ive toyed around with the idea of insurgents having suicide bombers, that would have been a fun thing to have in the game if the breacher class would have had that option for example, the drawback could have been that they dont have any weapons if you choose to take the bomb vest. Suicide bombers are already in the game but only on CO-OP mode. I guess alot of it boils down to balancing issues, but all im trying to say here is that they had alot of differend ways and approaches to make the game alot more unique and differing from other games but instead they choose to update the game with things that nobody cares about.

Good vid, people shouldn't forget about the game's roots and must give Ins2 a try But you've missed another half of the game - coop Coop in Insurgency is one of the best I've ever played, plus the best bots that punish players really hard for their mistakes and are very challenging to defeat even (players lose more in coop than in pvp vs players) Speaking of PVP, unfortunately Ins2 has only like 3-4 Push servers, from which some are modded with unnecessary mods. Besides mods, push in Ins2 isn't the best gamemode due to tight maps and explosive spam (which happens till these days), other amazing modes that were more tactical and interesting compared to meat-grinder-ish (and unballanced on some maps) push are dead( I would prefer Sandstorm for pvp (Push, Firefight, Frontline), and Ins2 for coop Because coop in Ins2 is better, and pvp in Sandstorm is more polished and more variable, with freeer and more balanced maps. But that is just a personal preference - I liked both Day of Infamy and Insurgecy, not only Insurgency, so I liked Sandstorm too because it's not just strictly og Insurgency but a mix of two. Sandstorm could've been better, sad that it was fucked up by real bad decisions. In the newest update they've added Free for All 🤦‍♂ Not saying that Ins2 pvp is bad, but right now it's not the pvp from it's golden age and I don't get such map freedom as in Sandstorm, I'm interested not just in hardcore pew-pew, but also in a tactical aspect of the game, and more freedom of gameplay choices. RIP OG Insurgency(. I still play coop sometimes

You make some good points. The PvP maps are definitely better designed for balance in Sandstorm, but to me they don't feel as interesting and engaging. Maybe thats just nostalgia for Ins2 though. I dont mind the clutter but I do agree that the maps are too big. What brought Insurgency's charm is the tight corridors, CQC battle and suppression. Played Sandstorm in 2021 and I never had that CQC feel so I stop playing.

They also combined multiple maps from 2014 into super maps in Sandstorm, but they all play worse imo. It's like if Counterstrike combined dust 1 and 2 and said "hey we made it better!!" Looking at the gameplay, I feel what made this game stand from sandstorm is the atmosphere of the maps which seem to be very gritty. Meanwhile most of the maps in sandstorm just look much prettier and less grittier. Sandstorm also has some skins and that feel kinda outta place along with live service/microtransactions. Insurgency was something else, especially for someone like me that came from Call of Duty, Halo, and Battlefield. There wasn't much of a HUD, the time-to-kill was _extremely fast,_ and the maps were large and intricate, meaning that you absolutely _had_ to communicate with teammates, _and_ both know the maps as well as where to be at any one moment, or you'd get utterly _destroyed._ The game was _tough,_ sure, but also fair in its own way, even though the maps allowed players to grief the enemy team in their spawn. Then came -Shitstorm- Sandstorm which, at the time, launched with a sore lack of content, extra features that detracted from the experience (CoD-style killstreaks, tactical / speed reloads, drivable vehicles, a badly implemented progression system, etc.) and that nobody asked for, and performance and technical issues, all of which _really_ hurt both itself _and_ the original game by extension, and damaged NWI's reputation something fierce. Not to mention transitioning to Unreal Engine meant that Steam Workshop mods, which helped to breathe extra life into the original Insurgency, was no longer a thing. Eventually, the game got mod support, but not through Steam Workshop, which is arguably _the_ gold standard for game mods on PC. Personally, in hindsight, all I wanted from Sandstorm was just Insurgency, but on a newer engine and with updated versions of the classic maps with better tuned balancing and much reduced spawn griefing. We'd _eventually_ start getting the old maps back in Sandstorm, but by then, the damage was done. Thankfully, NWI's still working on Sandstorm, but I've personally moved on. _Maybe_ I might get back into it, but I'm in no real rush.

What I really like about *Insurgency: Sandstorm* is how the gameplay is more into tactical, I like the feature where you could reload quickly (but you’ll lose a mag) and/or reload normally without the risk of losing a mag. I also loved how realistic the weapon details are in the game.

The game doesn't have killstreaks. Each team has a set amount of things they can call in, which is dependent on the team you're on and the mode. These can range from gunships, mortars, smoke artillery, c4 drones, and so on. A commander can call these in, but only if a radioman is nearby. A good commander can make or break a match depending on how strategically they utilize those resources.

it may not be tied to killstreaks, but it still sucks. I love these kinds of strategic commander call-ins for games like Red Orchestra, Battlefield, Squad, etc., but in this close quarters type of game it just means a sequence of random unearned deaths

It isn't a COD-type element that allows a team already stomping another team to use and even bigger boot, it is a very limited resource that requires two people to utilize. Yes, it does suck to be spawn killed by them, but if you're going to knock elements of Sandstorm to show how 2014 is better in some aspects, you shouldn't claim it is something worse than it is. It makes it sound like you're trying to be overly harsh on sandstorm by claiming it's something that its not. Regardless, it's a great video and you've gotten yourself another sub.

I love this game. They greatest thing about it to me is the co-op. After getting the hang of the game and learning how to call in gunships and what not it turns into a game where you can carry your entire team to victory while having 1-200 kills and looking like and absolute beast.

I still play Insurgency 2014. Loved it still and almost a decade of playing. Rarely play multiplayer, more on the PVE where most friendships are made through the constant comms chatter. The maps are small, tight and lots of CQC close calls because of it. I played Sandstorm for about 55 hours in 2021 then stopped. The problem with the maps is that they are too big, you die quick without the satisfaction of being suppressed. My one and only PTSD simulator

I started playing Insurgency Sandstorm last week and so far I enjoy it very much. Before that I played a lot of Battlefield 4 which of course has the rewarding mechanic of unlocking lots of stuff. Insurgency Sandstorm, despite having unlockable cosmetics, convinces me with its gameplay. I like the challenge of trying to survive as long as I can (tho I have died at least once in every PVE match so far which I play most of the time) and being as high on the leaderboard as possible. The game is not forgiving and I really like that hardcore like aspect of it. So far I can not say that i get bored of it.

Sandstorm is like if the next iteration of Counterstrike redid all of its weapons and mechanics, and got rid of all of its famous maps, oh, and added fire support. NWI knew what they wanted to make, but ironically, engine and budget limitations up to that point actually resulted in a more exciting game than what they envisioned and were finally able to deliver with Sandstorm.

I think in terms of art design(not graphics) I like insurgency 2014 a little bit more. I like how their is a uniformity in each factions' identity. I dont really know how to explain it but it is nice to not see some dude running bright red camo in the desert.

Yeah man I hate everyones obsession with vanity. Especially for someone like me who is colour blind. When the enemy team has to look the same as the rest of their team its easier to train your brain to react to those colours or shape of the uniform etc... but when everyone is running around in different skins it just destroys my brain I always TK.@@nohud_

I was an avid player of the OG insurgency mod and the 2014 game. Sandstorm is a load of fun, but it lacks the gritty charm that the first two have.

I'd love to play Insurgency 2014 again. My favorite thing to do was to play on the public, noncompetitive 12v12 firefight servers on there. Peak, Panj, Ministry, Heights, just about all the maps were fantastic! Sadly, since then no one plays multiplayer on there - everyone moved on to Sandstorm or other titles. Insurgency 2014 is grittier and darker than Sandstorm, and I can tailor the game's environment to be exactly how I want it to look like thanks to the workshop, unlike in Sandstorm where you have dudes running around in Tron outfits. I miss Insurgency 2014, I miss being told to "quit gaggle-fucking and spread out." : (

no game other than maybe a new insurgency will replace the incredibly good gunplay that this game has. I have around 800hrs in the game, maybe like 200 on 2014 and 200 on the HL2 mod and holy fuck have i never loved a shooter as much as I love this one.

I have Sandstorm on my Xbox One because I don’t have a dedicated gaming computer. I’m having a lot of fun with it, but I strongly want native customization options for Bots, because hot damn the AI is all over the place. One moment they have less sense than Helen Keller, the next they’re 360 no-scope head shooting you with an MG from the hip from the other side of the map while simultaneously mag dumping at your lower ranked teammate and missing every shot.

Ins2014 was one of my favorite games in the past and I was waiting for Sandstorm to finally release. I thought they will do all the same things, but better.. but, the game never felt same to me as previous one. Previous one had something. I guess, lack of interface, dark semi-realistic color palette did the thing. In Sandstorm I was playing at European/Russian servers and it was nothing like you are showing in the video, which is pretty sad to me. Lobbies are full of Russian kids playing music through soundboard and shitting with stupid jokes only they think are funny. Maybe thats just cause I'm not the same man anymore, I dunno. Thanks for the vid man, hope your channel will grow, you have some potential, for real.

i think you're right about the lack of interface and the color palette. Small details, but helps the game feel more immersive to me. And the lobbies in NA are just like what you described sometimes, but can also be more fun. thanks for the kind words :)

Some people talk about how 2014 insurgency is done and gone, but it's not? I still have the game in my library and still play it now and then, the game is still fun a great source shooter, plus other players still play PvP + PVE, and also get this: MODDING SUPPORT! While yeah some maps can feel really tight, and being a long range sniper is impossible on some maps the game can still give you some real fun and bang for your buck, being no DLC whatsoever either.
