I have a question: I’m a musician and I would like to monetize (residual income) my music on my videos from my other channel. Is it possible to do this without locking in contract with platforms like Identify?

You might be able to put your music only from the other channel on Identifyy.

Great video! It definitely seems like a LOT of trouble and hassle overall with very little in the way of compensation. I think theft is a real issue for some authors though, and perhaps what is motivating many stock composers to take this route. I've heard some real horror stories!

Thanks Steve. I have not really heard that much about theft in my career. Especially from indies. And really every song is just taken from another song for the most part especially in background music and corporate music. I think we need to quit focusing on these fear issues and get to Composing and get to pitching so we can...wait for it…make music income. ;)

@@MakeMusicIncome Hey Steve, doesen't Artlist register your tracks automatically with some kind of KZbin-monetization-service? If so, that means that the tracks you give them become somewhat exclusive to avoid trouble with other libraries, right? Just curious how you handle that. I don't register my tracks at all (just P.R.O.) as for all the good reasons Eric is talking about in the video. Cheers, Andy

I've been researching content ID and other lic, copyright, distribution, publishing etc. for over a week and a half. I've built a spreadsheet of over 100 resources for services, agencies, etc. You are the first person to say that content ID is not worth the trouble. Does that mean your stuff can or can not be used in someone else's KZbin video and can you get paid if it is used? Given that this video is a year old, is it all still the same and relevant, or has anything changed or improved? Finally, it's totally mind-boggling, and you covered only one specific aspect. How or where do I find/hire a one-stop shop to deal with it all? How would I ever find time to be creative and make music?

Well at that time my main issue was being afraid that my income from one library might be affected. But that turns out not to be the case. Earlier this year I signed with Identifyy and really am happy with the decision. Content ID has been one of my top incomes from my stock music. Check out this video for more on this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWqxnal-ap2Lb5Y and there are some other videos now on my site and podcast about it. I think Content ID is likely the best route now as subscription libraries pay less, and if you want any possible income from your stuff used in videos. This does NOT apply to sync licensing for TV and Film, etc, as these libraries will likely want the CID income. Your final point is a good one. Dude, welcome to the music business. There is just…a LOT. Get signed up with a PRO, Content ID, Soundexchange, and register your songs that are nonexclusive there. Then get pitching. If you are pitching to Exclusive libraries then don’t include register those songs with CID.

Great video Eric - thanks for sharing as I was literally thinking about this topic and up you popped! It's been mentioned elsewhere that theft of RF music is the main reason a lot of us opt for content id. As Steve pointed out there have been some real horror stories involving unscrupulous devils stealing compositions and registering them as their own. Unfortunately the RF industry still doesn't have any real solutions to this issue, and it doesn't help that there's no communication between them and the content id 'players' to implement some sort of system that protects and benefits composers and clients alike. I think if you pitch to libraries then they will register the music to said library but credit you as the composer, invoking content id, so at least you're covered in that respect. For RF sites though...it's definitely a tricky one as you're damned if you do, damned if you don't 😕. Anyway keep up the great work - you've got a new sub 😉! Regards from the UK, Brian

Yeah, I go through periods where I think I should have all my RF stuff in CID, but then I look back at literal pennies I have made through years of getting CID money from CDBaby or Songtradr. Maybe I might be tempted to go through my catalog and find things I would never in a million years send to sync and just register them with Adrev. Maybe I could make another video comparing the services and choose one for my catalog. Then report back earnings. That may be interesting.

You're so right. I've never saw a penny from content ID royalties. You can end up making money only if your song gets used by a video with hundreds of millions of views, it may always happen but in that case you're probably already famous and have your own song already monetized on your channel. If we're here thinking of making some money with stock licensing music for clients it means we haven't seen a penny from content ID, Spotify (which pays 3 bucks for 1000 streams in the best of the cases). The classical way of making money with music is long time dead (make a record, sell albums, earn money). Eventually we can get there, but in 2024 people expect to listen to music for free. Honestly the only way to monetize my music so far has been production for clients who needed a soundtrack for their games, videos, or even to sing on. And stock music licensing is a good opportunity to make a decent income, and if the price to get on those platforms is forgetting the pennies Cd Baby would give me with content ID so be it. My music is already copyright protected, if someone uses it or makes a shit ton of money out of it without my consent I can always claim my rights via my copyright society. But if that happens, it would mean I would have get already so much famous and would gain visibility and publicity anyway. And that won't happen so easily 😅 This is why I will distribute my music on these platforms without content ID.
@MakeMusicIncome
@MakeMusicIncome 7 ай бұрын
Understandable. And I agree that music production and work for music clients is the most predictable means of income, besides a job like teaching on salary, or music director on salary, etc. Stock I think of as a side income for my non-exclusive music. I think sync can be a good side income but it is a very long game and requires hundreds to thousands of songs out there to make real consistent income.

Hello! I want to say thank you for putting this video up and informing us on the potential pitfalls and risks. You da man! I do have a question to ask though. I'm just looking into the content id matter and I've gotten some different perspectives for n it. I'm not officially putting out music, but I'm considering it. So a perspective I wanted to ask about is protecting your own music, which prompted some people to choose content id route. Some artists have had their work legit stolen by others online, because those folks took the artist's unprotected work and put their names on it because there wasn't one. So my question is: what are your thoughts or recommendations on that matter? If content id isn't a good investment as per the video, but the artists need some way to protect their work which content id appears to provide, then what are some effective alternatives? What options allow for the artists to maximize their profit, minimize the hassle they inadvertently cause the users of their music, and protect their work at the same time? I ask for forgiveness in advance if I betray any fundamental misunderstandings. I know this is important stuff; I'm just new to it and trying to wrap my head around it. 😅

Hi my friend! I'm a big fan of your channel and music producer from Brazil. I have two questions for you. That can also help other subscribers of your channel. 1 - As a beginer on this music business thing, I submited a song in Songtradr, to see where I could go with it. I've distributed just one of my music as an experience with youtube monetization. I noticed that there is a message which says "delivery pending". I contacted the support and they say it can take a while for youtube integrate my song. With your experience, how long does it take for it to happen? 2 - My other question is: I've noticed CD Baby has a great feedback from their customers. Companies like Songtradr, Identifyy, Adrevs, etc are known to be free and stuff... but I was thinking that, if I should gather some money and distribute all of my music with CD Baby instead, once they seem to deal with all the stuff related to my music on a more professional way. Do you have experience with CD Baby? What do you think about them? Thanks in advance for the attention! Greetings from Brazil!

Despite the fact that is a paid service. what do you think about that?

Great video Eric as usual. To be honest, I register RF tracks to content ID for security reasons only, I don't expect to earn money from it since as you said it's pennies. Apart the fact that I can't join some libraries, it hasn't brought any trouble with customers since it's a thing that runs for years now and many clients are familiar with it. Have tested some tracks without content ID and haven't seen any difference on the sales part (maybe they weren't special enough hehehe). I wish there was though a way that we could protect the tracks from getting registered by someone else without the clients getting the copyright claim. P.s I saw two of your albums that went live the previous days on a library that I've signed too and waiting one of mine to come live soon. Great job!

Thanks for this comment! Are you in Motion Array? If so, do okay there with CID tracks? I’d have to take everything out of AudioSparx, it’s only been paying like streaming lately, but have made 200-300 there this year so…or I could let them CID everything for 40% of what they’d collect. Which is a bad deal all around. Will continue to listen to comments of those RF folks with CID tracks.

@@MakeMusicIncome Yes I'm in MA, along with several others, with 118 tracks at the moment from which about 2/3 are CID. Based on the stats they provide, on my top 10 selling tracks of this month and from what I recall on previous months, there are both CID and non CID. Maybe it would be better if they were CID free, will never know hehehe. I don't think letting Audiosparx handle CID because you couldn't know for sure how they will handle licenses bought from other RF libraries. For that reason if I ever join artlist (where they CID the tracks) I would behave them as "almost exclusive". A final note on CID is that most people use it a) mostly for protection as @Stevie B // Production Music Academy said because of the horror stories. b) Earn money from people who use your music without buying license, so you may get some good money if that video gets lots of views and c) if they have a YT channel from which they send traffic to the RF libraries and also earn money from the channel (have seen channels with literally hundreds of thousands views). Some of them can be found on the top sellers of AJ whom most of them have CID their tracks and they don't seem to have problem on selling hundreds or even thousands of licenses. As far as I know Music and Production libraries follow the same tactic for the same reasons (at least the ones that I'm part of) but of course they will handle CID and not the author. Sorry, for the extended reply but hope it helped a bit.

Eric, super useful video as always. I’ve been bingeing your whole channel. This touches on something that I’m a bit confused about. I never content ID any of my tracks. I recently uploaded several tracks to Songtradr and Jamendo and opted them in to their monetization and licensing programs (non-exclusive.) The question being is will there be conflicts now if someone uses my track from say, Songtradr, on KZbin and Jamendo is also monitoring that track for KZbin monetizing? Also, can I then upload those tracks on those platforms to the stock music libraries I sell in, or will that create copyright claims for customers? Like I said, I don’t use content ID but not sure how it works when opted in for the KZbin monetization on another platform. Clear as mud? Thanks.

Thanks Jon! Yeah I would choose one or the other. And yes, if you upload those songs to P5, AJ, MA, etc, you will need to list which one has put Content ID on the tracks. I know Songtradr pays 60 or 80% depending on the type of account you have. What does Jamendo pay you from Content ID? I’ll also be interested in your (and anyone else’s) experience in Jamendo. Hi again, Eric. After spending much of the last couple of days trying to find sensible answers to my questions about CID and related topics, I've come back to you for some sense! Even though you recently had a go at my questions on another video! Nowhere did I find out if my tracks on Pond5 are automatically entered into CID without my knowing. Here you seem to be saying that they are, although I'd just come from a 'rival' video saying they aren't. Also, you say that CID is good for non-exclusive libs, not so good for exclusive, which is the opposite of what I thought I'd learned! I thought it makes sense where the music should only come from one source, such as, as you say, artists releasing individual songs, whereas with the same tracks in more than one library, surely that's only going to lead to conflict? I'm guessing you mean actively to put tracks into CID yourself is bad before sending to the library because they will do it themselves? It would be interesting to know if tracks are entered into CID when accepted onto the site or when purchased. Any ideas? If the former, it could mean that a CID claim could be triggered as soon as another site sells a track. If the latter, at least I'll know there's no problem if a track has only been sold by one library and I could choose to take it down from the other if concerned. Frankly, I'm tempted to ignore the whole issue and just lodge tracks with anyone that's interested - I might not sell any anyway! Thanks again for all your kind assistance. Chris Corry

This is a lesser known thing, but I've read that one can register to have the Content ID function on one's KZbin channel directly with KZbin as opposed to registering it with a distributor. Have you heard about this? If so do you have any insight on that subject?

@@MakeMusicIncome No... Not exactly. Some reason my comments with the links get deleted I'm guessing, because they come across as spam, but no not the partnership program. Its a form one has to fill out on the google support page for KZbin pertaining to KZbin Content ID. I could email it to you cuz my comment(s) with the link keeps getting deleted. I haven't used it myself because at the moment I do remixes on my KZbin channel which are ineligible to apply for the Content ID directly with KZbin, but I have distributed music with distributors, but I don't like their percentages that they want to split with a content creator, so I looked it up one day as to how to deal directly with KZbin as far as Content ID.

@@MakeMusicIncome I don't intend to spread any "misinformation" within your comment section. My intention is to make known information what is rarely ever talked about amongst Content Creators. I plan on trying it out to find out if this is true as far as Content Creators being able to utilize the "Content ID System" theirselves as opposed to depending on a distributor (a "middle man")

Honestly unsure about this. I mean how inconvenient is it really to release a track if you know it has content ID when you buy it? I feel like surely content ID is the future, albeit not having yet been made to suit everyone properly. It's easy to fingerprint music, so protecting again piracy should be an easy given. I've recently just uploaded 2 new tracks to identifyy. Feeling apprehensive for all the reasons you outline - but I'll let you know how sales go, after all, that's the main concern right?

Totally get your view. Maybe ppl who buy stock music a lot will be cool with, but the fact that the libraries have all that info should tell you that they have to address this a lot.

@@MakeMusicIncome There's an article somewhere about it where a successful audio jungle artist syas that when he registered everything with adrev, and pretty much the only people complaining were the ones that hadn't paid for his tracks. He had gone down that route because someone else had illegally registered tracks of his with Adrev, and was making that money, and he got emails from clients asking to clear their videos. He couldn't clear them because someone else had already registered them. I think I'm going to ask Motion array if there is a way that they can find out how many people use the Content ID filter. Hmmm. Very on the fence about this.

@@MakeMusicIncome So I asked! The reply from 'support' was : "As support, I can say that we see complaints about content ID, but from users who don't understand the upside. We only see a small fraction of users, so it may be that most users love it, and we just see the few complaints." Reply from 'content' was: "We unfortunately don't have that type of data available at the present moment. I'm sure that some people won't want to deal with contentID, but I believe it is quickly becoming the norm within most libraries and I think customers are coming to expect to have to clear contentID claims. Also as a composer myself, I highly suggest contentID - we put a lot of work into our music and owe it to ourselves to protect our music." So I guess make of that what we will!! Certainly seems like something libraries should get momre info on!

I think it comes down to what are the odds someone who has a HUGE audience is going to use your dinky song from Pond5 or AJ or MA, and have a million views. That’s the only way it makes sense to do Content ID. Stock music is what I do when I’m not focused on Sync Licensing. It’s for my B (or C) catalog. I’m not putting all my music into a system that will sign it for a year to 3 years (Adrev, Identifyy) and not be able to pitch it to something that could really make income during that time. Then I have to go back and add CID to all the tunes, I have to redo all my submissions and add that info to hundreds of submissions…For ME, I think the trade off still works in my favor not doing CID. But again, Stock is of secondary concern for me income wise. It’s not my main goal in composing. Many other composers may want stock to be their bread and butter, so CID may make more sense for them. But just know you will miss out on money from some libraries (MA, Auiosparx, etc.)

Identifyy should be careful with risk, because the website have a record of “Scamming” and “Stealing” customer royalties, even they are no violation at all. Customer service also response in the first point, but after years or even your account is suspended, they will ignore that. Estimated us and other artist are become victim of this. If you want to use their service, please use with caution.

Please correct me if I'm wrong So the side effects of CID are 1. Getting rejected by some libraries 2. Some libraries take more percentage of your earnings 3. A bit of trouble for clients to use your content 4. Impossible to get music on Sync libraries But instead you secure your rights and no one can steal your creations and also you'll be payed when someone uses your music... A difficult choice tbh
@MakeMusicIncome

1. I can only think of 1 or 2 that do not allow CID. 2. Library earnings should not be affected unless they have a way to filter CID songs out of a search. 3. Yes, some clients may want to monetize and not want to whitelist but it’s becoming more acceptable 4. Well, not impossible, but no reason to do CID unless you are sure where it’s going.

@@proverbalizer release it on distrokid, but dont add it to stores you dont want it in. Click the content id part (there will be a small yearly fee per song. From there under "goodies > helpful when needed" youll find the "youtube allowlist". And the info of your posting, specify in your beat that they will have to send their youtube info for you to whitelist after they upload and content id detects it, so they can collect the revenue on that video (but note they will not be able to do content id, and any posts they didnt authorize, those royalties would go to you so it would be on the artists themseleves to monitor and take down unauthorized uploads), but thats just the buisiness of non exclusive licensing. Its awful. And its just a matter of time before lawsuits are getting thrown all over the place.
