When you think of Off-White, what do you think of?
Industrial design elements, diagonal lines, quotation marks, and of course the red zip tie. Seen on many of the brand’s own clothing and sneaker releases as well as their collaboration with Nike, the red zip tie is a core element of the brand’s aesthetic. The industrial connotations of the zip tie align perfectly with Virgil Abloh’s vision for his brand.
It comes as no surprise then that Off-White has finally secured a trademark for their use of the red zip tie on footwear. This comes after a lengthy legal battle with the US patent office since 2018. The brand argued that the use of the zip tie was as recognisable to the Off-White brand as their own logo.
While this patent will stop imitators, a bigger question is still unanswered. Should you leave the tag on your shoes? Let us know what you think in the comments!
