It was this interview where I first found you and realized we are very similar in our wide range of training modalities

Couldn’t agree more on that point of people getting way too bogged down with the science behind it all! There’s absolutely a lot of great information out there to influence your training but the most important thing will always be consistency. Sometimes you gotta say fuck science and just do it because you enjoy it!

This was a good listen and awesome to see you on the Power Project Pod. Funny enough I made a video like this about a week and a half ago. This part of the pod took a very complex explanation which is good for this who really want to know the science, studies, etc. And in my opinion I do not think there is a right or wrong answer in a general sense, but a right or wrong answer depending on your goals. For example, do you want to get bigger? Lift first (First place you put your energy for the day so you get the maximum out put for maximum results). Same goes for running. If you want to increase your marathon time (focus on running first). Overall, again great listen.

I think running is harder than lifting so I always do the run before lifting. I don't even wait maybe change outfits to a sweat-free one. I don't want to be the person who goes to the gym twice in a day! I may not lift as much on the days that I just lift (no run). But I won't be able to do any type of run if I lifted (even lighter beforehand).

Mostly I run in the morning (or other Cardio on non-run days) and lift in evenings once or twice a week (no more than 3). It works pretty well for me. But I'm not a fast runner. I am relatively strong though.

I’ve noticed that when i run first i have more energy and that makes me push harder when lifting

I don't entirely agree with Mark's point that an adaption of removing push-ups might lead to greater strength... but I agree with lift-first. Additionally, as someone who uses %s instead of RPE for strength training, I find modulating my fatigue on my runs easier than on my lifts. i.e., if I'm at 90% because of running and am squatting near max intensity, failing the lift is the worst possible outcome. However, if i'm at 90% from squatting and am running after, running on tired legs is going to result on me missing my splits as a worst possible outcome. Could be a third argument for lifting first.

Fergus can you please do a video about your benchmark rankings for hybrid athletes? E.g. 100kg bench press and 30 min 5km = respectable, 140kg bench press and 24 min 5km = local legend etc etc

If you want to lose weight, run first, if you want to maintain or build muscle, lift first.

I've always felt better running before lifting, I tried lifting first then running but I ended up being gased mid run severly affecting performance.

I have a question . I enjoy powerlifting and boxing . Would it be wise to have a hybrid coach ? I mean I’m just guessing there is actually such a thing . But I’m thinking have two trainers may conflict with each other .

i run 4km in about 18-20 minutes depends on mood then do some upper body warmup / stretch leg muscle, then train upper body muscle by weightlifting. on the long run it does not affect my weightlifting exercise. maybe the first exercise use 5% less weight than i could do without running. but then my body sort of adapts and i can actually do more reps with same weight on next exercises. i do eat before good meaning good carbs, protein.. few fruits, take some ginseng/ashwaganda powder, take vitamin suppement, some special honey for endurance, half of protein shake and usual pre workout shake 😂 so im l like boosted as fck with nutrients vitamins and minerals. probably need some electrolites between running and weightlifting. so yeah intense running then intense weightkifting is possible in my opinion but u really need good nutrition otherwise u cannot do it as same level. i also do sauna and really cold shower after for recovery.. yeah that's a bit crazy but i do it for 7 months and i like this training is kinda all or nothing
