I don’t see how to have sympathy for this person. If someone that close to me physically said I was raped for a reason, her head would be off for a reason. I've been saying for ages that like, hardcore conservatism is just fundamentally abusive. I mean... If there's a venn diagram with "psychological violence" and "conservative social prescriptions" and "progressive social prescriptions"... Fuck, man. The progressive part has some in the first circle for sure, but the conservative one basically just has this tiny crescent of outer edge that doesn't overlap, because they base almost everything on fear and punishment. It's like a horrible Overton window of trauma.

As a Muslim myself, many Muslims believe tampons can break your virginity, but it was far fetched for me so I decided to try it. Around a year or so ago, I tried on a tampon for the first time but it didn’t go in. Long story short I had to get surgery because my hymen was so thick and my period blood was coming out of a literal dot and it wasn’t normal. Instead of getting the simple surgery and moving on in peace, I was traumatized by my dad’s insistence that I should wait till I get married to get the surgery despite the risks I might face for waiting a few more years. He argued with doctors telling them it was not necessary and told me that no man would want to stay with me because it would “feel” like I’ve had sex before. He seemed more afraid of “tarnishing the family name” over my own health and autonomy. I was 19 then so I was able to get the surgery without needing his consent, and I’ve been doing fine since then. Moral of the story I guess is that virginity is and always has been a tool for men to control women, so of course, it’s gonna end up creating a toxic culture around it. Just let people do whatever they want, and don’t control what others want to do.

I'm Muslim and tampons aren't haram and don't make you lose your "virginity". I also find that the problem with ultra strict and delusional Muslims, especially those who grew up in Muslim majority countries, is that it's less about God and more about what the family next door would say if they found out. The downfall to our tight knit community (ummah) is that we can be so judgmental towards each other if we aren't perfect. It's so sad, inshallah we can move past that in the future.

It’s genuinely so baffling to me that some people think being asexual is weird or wrong. Like, a straight man doesn’t feel sexual attraction to other men, why is it so hard to imagine a person who feels that way about everyone? Idk maybe it’s because my best friend is ace but it’s always felt pretty straightforward and reasonable to me.

When I reported a sexual assault, the cop asked me to tell the complete, very long story, twice over, several weeks apart to check for consistency. In between my two retellings, I learned new information by someone who had witnessed part of the assault. In the first telling, I mentioned that I ran past some acquaintances of mine, but in the second telling, one of these acquaintances had told me that when I went into the public bathroom, they didn’t see me leave, so when my pursuer showed up, they told him where I went, and he followed me into the girl’s bathroom. Thank god I’d already left the bathroom when no one was watching, or the whole thing could have become a full-blown rape. Problem is, all the cop heard was an inconsistency. I was a teenager, and when I realized he didn’t believe me anymore, I dropped the issue, because I felt embarrassed. My feelings at the time were, “well, he thinks I lied. This is over now.” I wish he had just asked me why my story had changed. I could have told him that I’d since spoken to someone who was present while I was being chased.

@noceboaffect3187
@noceboaffect3187 3 жыл бұрын
That’s not even right in the first place. Because even if your story was hypothetically inconsistent, that’s normal after a traumatic experience. Witness testimony can be very unreliable. Even when you can prove that a group of people were at a traumatic event, say a school shooting or attack, they can give contradictory testimony due to being panicked. On top of that people’s memory of an event after two weeks normally gets fuzzy and your brain fills in gaps. This generally reminds me of how we had a youth pastor teach our sex Ed class in public schools. Because he couldn’t say not to have sex until marriage because of Jesus, he used really outdated studies to tell us that if we had sex it was pretty much guaranteed we were either gonna have a kid or get an sti. Then almost everyone in my grad year who had access to birth control and condoms never had an issue with casual sex their entire time in high school.

It might help if the term "lose your virginity" didn't tacitly say that you're losing something. There has to be a more neutral language for that. I haven't had sex and don't plan to anytime in the near future because I don't feel ready PERSONALLY. I've never seen anybody who bases it on a moral or religious value do anything other than purity testing and being judgemental. Also, I'm pretty sure in Christianity that type of harsh judgement is a sin. Edit: I'm at the "asexual" portion, and that can give way to one example of what I said before. Conservatives are fine with asexuals from what I've seen because it means that they aren't "sex hungry" and will save themselves presumably until marriage. But I also guarantee that some of those people would turn against them if they didn't want a lot of sex after marriage, especially if they're a woman. I've heard people argue in all sincerity that it's a womans fault if her husband cheats on or breaks up with her if they aren't trying hard enough to be sexy for them. Even if they're having sex, if they aren't also being sexy constantly AROUND THE HOUSE then that's their fault.

It was honestly horrible and really traumatic. Fortunately, the detective who actually worked on my case was really great and he supported me a lot throughout the process. I was really worried because I'm a trans woman and that never came up or was an issue with the police. However, it required a lot of work on my end. Multiple meetings, having a wire-tapped phone call (where the perpetrator basically admitted that it happened), and more. Then my case got thrown out for "lack of evidence..." In reality it is "one of these infinite number of gods or no god. Good luck picking the right one!" @justalostlocal

Because they and the media lack the imagination to make it hot. Asking for consent could be at first embarrassing, but through joking or teasing in a flirty way asking can be hot af and establish a good mood too. Or you know just get good at dirty talks and stuff, although for that it's better to know the person well beforehand.
@Stevies_Precog_Gym_n_Spa420
@Stevies_Precog_Gym_n_Spa420 3 жыл бұрын
@@justalostlocal it doesn't need to be hot. Hotness is secondary in importance to consent. Consent is vital, even if it ruins the potential for sex. That's what we should be drilling into people's heads. When you integrate things into "play" people take it or leave it. "Play" includes experimenting with boundaries and comfort, joking or teasing, etc, but it also implies creating a space where the amount of permissiveness to someone else's actions are kind of amorphous and in the process of being determined, so it's best to get consent WAY before anything starts. When getting consent is part of the conditions for even beginning play then all is good. Hotness is the afterthought. Eros doesn't trump nomos no matter the circumstances.
@justalostlocal
@justalostlocal 3 жыл бұрын
I kinda assumed it's common sense to talk about consent and what you and the other party likes before sex, so my previous comment is exactly about how to communicate clear consent before the play/sex begins. But yeah I agree that consent should be put above anything else. If a person is so easily turned off by the other being considerate even if in an awkward manner, in my opinion that person isn't even worth having such intimate experience with.

Interesting! I had never thought about a biological purpose for the hymen, but that makes sense. The concept of "virginity" being dependent on it is incredibly arbitrary, too-- it can break at any time just by doing ordinary things. I knew girls who wouldn't use tampons because they were afraid it would break their hymens and that would mean they weren't virgins anymore! So wild.

*Nico being worried his parents will see the video is just another example of an Asian child fearing what their Asian parents will say. *Rahan's socially conservative upbringing is likely a combination of growing up Muslim, female, and Asian (South Asian in her case). [Also, very likely she has only been judged for being a virgin by people that are neither Asian, SWANA, nor Muslims and praised for being a virgin by Asians and Muslims.] *It is very telling that the female panelists have a lot more to say about how toxic the concept or virginity and over-valuing virginity are than the male panelists. It just further shows how gendered the concept of virginity is and how much more toxic it is toward women and girls than toward men and boys. This wasn't the worst Jubilee Middle Ground panel, but it wasn't the best either. At least that panel didn't have a bunch of trolls trying to constantly overpower and sealion the reasonable people.

Sometimes it's awful to unravel the mindset behind purity culture. I grew up in a pretty catholic conservative household, I didn't learn about consent up until I was almost turning 18 (I am 18 currently), and I realized so many of the experiences in which I dissociated to forget about my awful experience were sexual assault. I've heard people say that if you were assaulted more than once it's kind of your fault, but I think that's true up until the point that you aren't really taught about consent, so you don't really know what to do when you feel uncomfortable

i really do feel bad for people who buy into the 'no sex til marriage' idea. not only does it inevitably lead to objectifying ideas about virginity as this thing that you 'give up' and in doing so, lose a part of yourself, but i have to imagine it would cause a lot of emotional damage. being married doesn't suddenly make you ready for sex, anymore than being unmarried does, and by building up sex as this thing that only belongs in the institution of marriage, you kind of have to view your first time (which is naturally going to be awkward and uncomfortable and probably quite painful) as this thing that you're not allowed to have regrets or doubts over. You're really denying yourself sexual agency or the right to find enjoyment in your sex life if you lock yourself into this scenario where only your husband can provide you sex and it is by definition the only good sex you will ever get because he is your husband.

I don't understand this notion that the first time is guaranteed to be awful. That's such stupid, self fulfilling prophecy type shit. We should teach people to be attentive and empathetic with each other (especially their partners), good communication and how to voice your needs and boundaries. Yes, it will be awkward, it's a new level of intimacy and vulnerability; but awkward can still be fun. No, it won't be good sex, but it can be a good experience. Maybe it's just another blessing of lesbianism, maybe I'm just built different, but my first sexual experiences were all great. It saddens me that the opposite is so normalized, that we _expect_ it to be bad, we tell young people it is _certain_ to be bad, even when it's a fully enthusiastically consensual thing on all sides.
