The surgeons discuss glucosamine and its use in the treatment of osteoarthritis. They review the literature and determine that there is insufficient evidence to conclude that glucosamine helps the symptoms of osteoarthritis. There is no evidence to support its use in reversing the natural history of osteoarthritis.

Supposedly, if the joint still has cartilage the glucosamine will help rebuild it. But if all the cartilage has warn off, then it has nothing to stick to and, therefore will not help rebuild the cartilage. I am 78 years old and have been taking it for 25+ years and have absolutely no joint pains anywhere. I used to weigh 270 pounds and slowly lost 120 over the last 20 years. Works for me. I'm 74. I have lived in houses with stairs for most of my life and 20 years ago I noticed that every time I went to the second floor there was a clicking sensation in my knees. I went to my doctor and she said, "It's osteoarthritis." She recommended glucosamine. She said that it doesn't work for everyone but seemed to help the majority of people that take it. Her guess was - 70%. After about ten weeks of daily use the clicking went away. Ten years later I grew complacent and took it on a completely hit or miss basis (mostly miss) and the same clicking returned. I returned to daily dosage and the clicking went away and has never returned. That's a total of 20 years of personal experience. I had severe pain (no clicking) about three years ago and was given two steroid shots that helped. I feared at the time that I might have to get a cane. However, I adopted a five times a week regimen of riding my bike eight miles and swimming a mile. The severe pain downgraded after a couple of months to mild, occasional pain. I don't take any pain medication because of the downsides to NSAIDs. I occasionally make a cup of turmeric tea and have found that helps as an anti-inflammatory. I also went keto and lost about 20 pounds about a year ago. That helped even more. Glucosamine chondroitin has helped me and... given the sequence of events, I would doubt that that's a placebo effect. I think that these docs should be more careful concerning their advice. It's a bit cavalier. Some people short circuit the process by getting shots or using NSAIDs but you can only do that for so long before you pay the price in joint health. The best approach? Diet, exercise, avoiding injuries, and some supplements such as glucosamine chondroitin.

After a few weeks, I noticed that I was having knee pain, so I checked the bottle of glucosamine and found that I was not getting as much. Our Rottweiler was suffering from arthritis in the lower spine, typical for a dog of his age. The Vet had us try glucosamine and in thirty days, it was like he was a brand new seemingly younger dog. The Vet said it was hit or miss with no bad side effects for her patients. Or it might have been a placebo effect. Willi was a very smart dog who listened well. I’ve been using it for years. The slight irritation of my finger joints has gone away. I’d say there’s a possible placebo effect but there are no discernible side effects. The cosamine brand sold by Costco was, at the time, the only veterinary brand produced to usda standards, same as for human consumption.

I’ve been taking glucosamine since getting my knee scoped over 10 years ago. Several years ago I switched to glucosamine sulfate with chondroitin. I dont take it every day, but rather a few days at a time after feeling some knee pain return. The beneficial effect of taking it is always felt within a couple of hours. There is zero doubt in my mind that it works for me. If it were solely a placebo effect, as I am an avid fast walker, Id expect my mild arthritis in my knee to have progressed over the years. @@frankmontez6853 Congratulations! The sulfate version absolutely works for me...every time. All pain disappears within hours. It's not like a pain reliever, it clearly improves joint lubricity for much a longer period than any pain reliever acts. You might benefit from trying the sulfate variety. A friend of mine is a biochemist for Big Pharma. He said he looked into this but could not find a chemical pathway to explain why people say it works. I just tell him he needs to look deeper. Keep taking it...I suspect it's good for all your joints and connective tissue. Even the HCL worked in the beginning after a few weeks, but good reports were sporadic in the literature. I read somewhere this was due to some people taking HCL and others sulfate and that the sulfate reports were more consistently good. So I switched to sulfate. Over in Asia lots of folks eat chicken feet, which I believe is for the same reason. I'd rather pop a few horse pills. When I'm taking it, I typically pop 3 at a time once a day.

I had bursitis in my hip many years ago (approx 20). I went to the doctor as I could hardly walk from the pain. He took an X-ray and gave the diagnosis also adding I had the beginnings of arthritis in the hip joint. He recommended glucosamine and chondroiton. I started taking the supplement and it helped tremendously. I haven’t had any problems since. How can you dismiss it when you say no proper study has been done? Perhaps big pharma are reluctant to fund a study as there is no financial gain for them? They make more from pain killers that clearly are not good for long term use. I would not hesitate to recommend it. Also using vitamin D3 with vitamin K2 recently which has got proven benefits.

For me, glucosamine was a miracle. I am normally skeptical of the benefits of many supplements. I started a job delivering meat in my 50's. I would jump off the back of the truck, trying to give the impression I was young again. After a few months, my hand and knee joints were extremely stiff and painful in the morning when I woke up. I started taking glucosamine and it brought immediate relief. Because I had worked these joints for only a few months, maybe it would be different for say a carpet layer or bricklayer, who may have done it all their lives. I kept taking them, even after leaving the job after 10 months. After three years I changed brands and it seemed to produce blood thinning and low blood pressure, so I ceased taking the glucosamine. Amazingly, I felt as good as I did prior to doing the job.

I started taking glucosamine in my late 30s. Taking it consistently since then, but there was a period about four years ago where I went off all supplements, including glucosamine. And within a year I was planning on my first knee replacement. My knees were diagnosed with arthritis when I was 24 and told then that I had knees of a 64 year old. A couple days ago my doctor said my knees look like those of an 80 year old and I’m 62. The point of the story is when I went back on glucosamine after a year the pain I had developed during the year went away, and I stopped planning for a knee replacement. So I think glucosamine does work I’m an active person, so may be a lot of people who take it aren’t active. Recently I started again the process to get a knee replacement but then I went on WeightWatchers and after losing 15 pounds I’m no longer planning on a replacement this year because the pain reduced.

An orthopedic surgeon had told me that I have a torn meniscus based on a MRI. He wanted to do surgery on my knee. I told him no because a torn meniscus doesn't necessarily mean that's where the pain is coming from. These doctors are not checking to see if there might be an underlining cause that's causing the pain, like osteoarthritis. I avoided surgery and started taking glucosamine and I don't have any more pain. Moral of the story. Don't believe what some of these doctors tell you. Some of them probably just want to discourage you so you can allow them to do surgery on you, this way they can bill the insurance company and make money to give to their wives. So what if glucosamine doesn't work. It doesn't cost that much money for one bottle. If it doesn't work you know not to purchase it anymore.

I had a hip replacement in 2005 because I had erosion in the hip socket and no cartilage left. The hip joint installed was built metal on metal without the plastic liner between the ball and socket. It has a recall on it but the surgeon recommended at 4 weeks post op to start taking Glucosamine Chondroitin to increase natural lubrication. I was walking over a mile a day on it by that time. I have never had any heavy metals found from the joint erosion which was the cause for the recall. In 2013 I had the other hip replaced due to arthritis and erosion. I was told by that surgeon to stop taking glucosamine 2 weeks prior to surgery but did not give me a reason. Five days after stopping it, I started feeling a stiffness or delay in the movement of the first implant and the hip due for replacement started locking up and throwing me to the floor. By the surgery date, neither hip worked without severe pain so I was using a walker to go into the hospital. Two days post op I was home and taking glucosamine again. I have run out a few times, forgetting to buy more and only the pain and stiffness returning within 4 to 5 days, reminded me to buy more. For me it works. 1500 units once a day....every day.

Thank you Doc B and Doc Z. Yes, I have taken it. And it was actually recommended by a rheumatologist I had seen in the past. No, I did not see any improvement whatsoever. I did however take the entire bottle so I could report my improvement or not based on not just taking a weeks worth. So, in saying that I did try it on my aging dogs as they sure needed some relief too. No improvement with them either. I put them on CBD oil and see a result that is favourable. I still suffer and due to kidney disease and allergies to nsaids, I have taken lots of different medications. What I’m waiting for is my tkr in 2022. I am 26 and was hit by a drunk driver causing my knee to go into the dash (6’3 btw) resulting in a partially torn meniscus and a piece of cartilage that broke off and stayed in there. I am young and did not want surgery and was advised against it but couldn’t afford stem cell treatment. The injury obviously caused a lot of pain, For over a year afterwards and my knee popped and crunched really bad and made nasty sounds. Prolo therapy helped a little but not much, I was told to go on Cosamin for a couple months and I was shocked by the results the crunching went way down and the pain went away even when I went off of it. I will need surgery eventually or to get stem cells but for now if it starts hurting again (usually a little on really cold days) I go on Cosamin for a couple weeks and it won’t bother me for a long time. I love the stuff and know it works, Actually my MRI confirmed it and showed it helped heal a lot in my knee to the shock of my doctor who asked “what did you take this is insane healing for no surgery and there still being broken cartridge in there?” When I said cosamin she laughed and said “I’ve been skeptical but maybe there is something to it”

I take my vitamins at night this way while I sleep there in my system longer .hopefully absorb more of them into my joints this has turned out to be a positive result for me..by lowering the amount of pain I feel gives me a more quality of life..

Works for me. My arthritis pain in both of my knees started in 2017 and got a lot worse the last few years, so much so I started walking with a cane. I started taking Berberine in July 2023 not expecting to feel any results. Seven days after starting it I woke up feeling like I had new knees ! Told everyone I could about this miracle. I think it helped with inflammation. Took 1200MG a day. Pain decreased by about 70 percent. After that success I started searching for more and heard about Glucosamine. Again I didn't expect to feel any results but after two weeks my pain decreased drastically. I am taking Vivanaturals Joint Support. I am SO GLAD I did not see your video before taking Glucosamine, I might not have tried it. Placebo effect, possibly but I really don't care. I have tried other medications with no results. I only wish I had known about Berberine and Glucosamine years ago. Be careful about saying it doesn't work. I don't think it would be selling as well as it is on just a placebo effect. Aspirin wasn't helping my pain as much as Glucosamine and Berberine.

I've been taking it since 2008. It has done wonders for my lower back arthritis. A bunch of us seniors discussed it a few years ago. The verdict was: 1/3 think it helps a great deal; 1/3 "somewhat"; 1/3 "not at all". I was warned not to expect results until about two weeks had gone by. That was good advice. An ortho doc recommended purchasing only brands I was familiar with. The product is apparently not regulated, and some brands on the market may contain impurities.

I had a second knee scope in 2001and was already having problems. The surgeon told me that I was on a path to osteoarthritis in the future. He recommended I start taking glucosamine. I did and it really made no day to day difference for many years. Since 2002 I have had a number of orthopedic surgeries due to job related injuries and an active lifestyle. A few times I would run out of glucosamine and be complacent about purchasing more. I started to notice that if I was off glucosamine for a week or more, that I would become very painful in joints that had been injured. Once back on the glucosamine, I would feel good in a few days. Almost like the body has a toxicity level it needs to maintain to work well. Since 2018, I have had several x-rays of the hips and knees and a 3rd knee scope on the same knee. One family practice doctor and one surgeon have both proclaimed that my joint spacing in my hips and knees is remarkable for my age, my known injuries, and my activity. I am a firm believer. BTW about 10 years ago I removed diet soda from my life. The additional relief felt from removing aspertame made me never want to put it back in my body.

Doctors suggested knee surgery, which I did not want to do. In the '90s. I started taking Glucosamine regularly, sometimes in a supplement that also included Chondroitin. As time went on I was able to take longer and longer walks without any pain. For the past 20 years I have continued to take Glucosamine, and I regularly go on 5+ mile hikes without any pain at all. I have taken glaucosamine for over ten years. I have been diagnosed with arthritis in my neck, lower back and in my knees. The first sites were diagnosed years ago. The right knee in early 2020 when I ruptured my quadriceps tendon. I had no idea if it was effective until I stopped taking it for 3 weeks some 6 or 7 years ago, at which point I developed a noisy and uncomfortable neck. I went back on and in 2 weeks everything was fine again. Fast forward to about 3 years ago and my neck was sore again and may turning was limited. I went home after a bad day and checked the glaucosamine bottle for strength, it was 500mg, I had picked up the wrong bottle a few weeks before. My usual is 1300mg glaucosamine/condroitin and MSM. I returned to my usual dose and my neck was good again in 10 days. How did I take the wrong dose for days without noticing it? I use a pill box. Since surgery on my knee for the tendon in February 2020 I have been taking 2 x 1300mg daily along with 2 x 1000 iu D3.

What I find with glucosamine is, when I stop taking it, for example after I see something like this video, my pain in my knees gradually increases over time. When I start taking it again my knee pain decreases over time. Currently I am taking it, and have been for a number of years, and I have no pain. I am 65, I swim laps for exercise, run on the elliptical, play tennis and golf a couple times a week. I also stretch everyday, and ice my knees after I play tennis. Placebo effect, I doubt it, but who knows.

Hi Docs, I have had knee pain for over a year. I'm 60 and overweight. I started taking Glucosamine to see if it would change anything. I did not have any expectations so I don't think I suffer from the placebo affect. After 3 weeks, my knee pain was gone. After a year of pain, 3 weeks of Glucosamine and no pain anymore. I don't know, but it really sounds like it did something to me. I guess I could stop it for a while and see if the pain comes back... I'll let you know how I do.

@@TalkingWithDocs I just did a test. I have stopped taking glucosamine and within 3-4 weeks, my knee pain, knee cracking and ankle cracking started again. I'm now starting again to take Glucosamine to see if these symptoms will go away. I don't think I'm suffering from the placebo effect because it took so long to get the symptoms back. I will chime in again when the pain goes away.

I used to play pickup basketball weekly as well as jogged in my late 30s. I started to get some swelling and pain in the knees, particularly the right one. I started a regimen of this and after about 6 weeks I could feel a difference. Not completely gone but reduced and the swelling subsided. I’m now 71 with arthritis in both knees but my mobility is still good, with little pain. I still take 2 capsules a day.

I refer back to my comments regarding your discussion of turmeric; no harm but no supporting evidence of effect. That said, as you have rightly pointed out, there is always a significant placebo effect with any medication that should not be overlooked. Thank you, Dr. Jim waller

12 years ago I started to get knee pain after running 20 miles a week in my mid 20's. At that point I had been running for around 3 to 4 years with 2 rest days a week. I had to rest longer and tone down the mileage to 10 miles a week. I still got the knee pain and had dealt with it for about 3 months. around that time I started to look for answers because I didn't want to take pain medication or potentially get surgery. Tried to go natural by making a ton of bone broth and drinking it but that didn't help; it was a long process. 3 months after looking for answers I decided to go over the counter with supplements since glucosamine kept popping up on Google searches. My running started feeling better after 2 months of constantly taking it and I was able to get back to 20 miles a week after 6 months. The only times I got knee pain is when I did the tough mudder race or if I don't take it for a while with a 6-month break from working out and jumping back into running. But taking a break over 6 months and taking glucosamine 2-3 months prior to long runs stops the knee pain. Going over 30 - 40 miles per week of running I did get some stiffness or my knees feel weird even with glucosamine. About 5 years ago I started to incorporate balance exercises like single-leg balances which also helped. I'm in my late 30s now. Last year I was able to do 30+ miles per week and have no issues with my knees. I'm coming back after an 8-month break, and took glucosamine for the past 3 months and doing single-leg balance exercises. Now I'm doing 10 miles per week 2 rest days and jump roping for 30 minutes(every other day including on run days) for the past 3 weeks with no pain. Will start doing 20 miles per week next week and hopefully 30 miles per week by September. Also doing full body exercises since I'm considering joining the airforce before the cut-off age.

To my understanding Glucosamine works as lubricant on joint. If you consistent work out running your joint make knuckle sound even simple movements. After I took glucosamine I guess it lubricate joint cartridge to provide joint comfort. My joint doesn’t make knuckle sounds anymore. For arthritis pain I believe it does provide joint comfort.

At one point both of my shoulders had severe bursitis, and had a shoulder surgery to repair a torn ligament on my left shoulder and my right needing to have a steroid shot at least 2x a year. But since I started taking Glucosamine, the pain on both shoulders subsided and the popping and creaking sound went away - I now have more movement w/o pain.

When my dog was younger, he could easily jump on the couch. As he aged, he could no longer do so. Once I began to give him a Glucosamine pill everyday. he was again able to make the jump. As for me, I no longer heard a popping noise from my knees after I began taking it. My dog has no idea what a placebo is.

In 2001 I had chemo, I was having a lot of knee pain, so my GP suggested an X-ray and it showed I had 30% cartilage in 1 knee and less than 10% on the other. (Side effect of chemo, apparently) Doc gave me a prescription (UK) for glucosamine and 3 months later, my knees where up to 80% and 65%. Every time I get joint pain I take out the glucosamine and a couple of weeks the pain has gone. I’m 67 and won’t be without them. Maybe they don’t work for everyone, but I’ve suggested them to friends and the majority found that they helped. Worth a try! No?.

2-35 year nurses here, great video, Worked in Ortho as well as Icu ,Er Pcu, Lots of wear and tear on our bodies. Took glucosamine for years ,The sure way to tell it works is take it several months and stop. Our experience was, it led to greater joint pain, decreased mobility , when stopped. Now that being said, it was our experience , and yes we would not get off of it again. So what do you have to lose. It worked for us and we are a couple 71, happy thriving and we attribute a lot to glucosamine, chondroitin and msn . Your presentation was spot on. I have also see it work on animals , old .
