traction control system brakes spinning wheels but it also cuts engine power. It really depends on the system and how well it performs. If the power is cut down too much sometimes that isn't good either when for off roading. It all depends on the terrain you are on and how well your traction control system can perform to that particular terrain. And of course, the skill of the driver.

I drive a Defender, so never really asked myself this question LoL. However, on a serious not, in Dubai I drive a Kia Sorento 3.2. On sand I find it much easier with no traction control. With the traction on, it just kills the throttle and the car digs into the loose sand. Just my 2c worth.

Hi car advice great video. Though it should be self explanatory to most people. But a more advanced question should be when to turn off or what situation should you leave traction control off?

Was stuck with my fwd 06 highlander with 265/70/16 bfg km3s. It was a foot of snow in the middle of the fields. I was running traction control off. It was like a open diff. 4pm after trying to pull it out with a small tractor. Failed to haul it out. Decided to turn on the traction control and It took me a while till I got unstuck and got out. It performs like a lsd.

I don't think the question on most people who drive offroad is wether to turn the TCS off - we know it defeinitely helps if we don't have locking diffs, but if we should turn the ESP/DSC off. Those ESP systems cut throttle and delays TCS from working as quickly on some situations on mine. That would be a good one to know CarAdvice.
@Drivecomau8 жыл бұрын
+prana8 The systems are linked. In most cases when you switch TCS off, you're also switching ESP off.
@ItchyFeetOz8 жыл бұрын
Must be different for different cars then. ESP is the killer of TCS in my system, I can turn off ESP without disabling TCS.

Turn traction control off when sand driving because the traction control will just dig a hole until it finds traction which will get you stuck
@prandomable4 жыл бұрын
you don't want any traction control when you are needing continUOUS momentum like deep mud, sand, or river crossing. You want traction when you are needing "traction".

In my beat up 1994 Land Rover Disco V8 Auto I get the same result simply by riding the brake when needed.. I call it.. Manual TC.. Does wonders.. Kind of like doing an Aussie Style Burnout but using less acceleration while braking as you don't want to break traction when it's already lost... I also apply the same technique when driving down steeep hills in an Auto as I feel a slow braked creep decent is a lot better then a 40km/h decent while waiting for the tranny to kick in and slow down with engine braking (not sure about Diesel but Petrol can be Deadly).. So yeah basically every braked vehicle can have Traction Control whether it's applied manually (Brake while accelerating) or automatically with gadgets that can fail.. plus the added bonus of another Aussie device known simply as ARB (Diff Lock) if you can afford wonderful addons that is... Cheers.

Is there simple TRC or Active TRC (a-trc)? There is significant difference between them
@71502854 жыл бұрын
Traction Control itself cuts power to the spinning wheel, or sometimes brakes spinning wheel. Active Traction Control A-Trac mostly brakes spinning wheel, and maybe sometimes cut the throttle too? Idk about that...

@@7150285 maybe 😀 but toyota says - a-trc is significant better, and I try to know how it depends in real off-road. My prado has the 'simple' TRC and I want to understand it behavior in the same situation.

Do you know if Toyota Active Traction Control or Auto LSD cuts back throttle/engine power too? I know it performs braking on spinning wheels. I don't know if it cuts power because it's not part of the powertrain system unlike traction control correct?
@Drivecomau4 жыл бұрын
The Toyota system will cut power in some situations - it depends on drive settings though.
@spencerm1064 жыл бұрын
Yes, all Toyota's VSC/TRC/A-TRC will modulate the engine power with brakes, just in different ways. Only way you can stop it is by locking the centre differential and holding the TRC button for 3 seconds. If the centre diff is open, even with VSC and TRC/A-TRC disabled you'll feel it still intervene. I can't really think of a reason to disable TRC/A-TRC though. If in soft sand it intervenes too much, your tyre pressures are too high. Only VSC is disruptive in sand when dealing with large ruts. Most people think sand driving involves F1 racing styles and then complain about the systems holding them up. Reduce tyre pressures and drive accordingly and they still work well.
@71502854 жыл бұрын
@@spencerm106 I have offroaded and learnt by now. You will want Traction Control/A-Trac and VSC OFF when you need momentum like going thru mudholes, river crossing or deep sand. A-Trac, Traction Control and/or VSC will cut power and inhibit the momentum. To keep momentum you WANT tire spins. And the other hand you want traction ON when rock crawling, going thru off camber ruts when your tires need TRACTION to prevent tire spins.
