Yes if you’re only looking to lighten it a bit then you should be able to get away with color as long as your hair isn’t previously dyed! I’d just suggest using something with ash in it to counteract the underlining warmth that will be exposed.

My daughter has medium dark natural blonde mid back hair and for years my colorist friend used high lift on her cuz she was 18 when started with highlights and I didn't want the damage of pure bleach. She used Goldwell 11V and some blonding cream with P mix and 40 volume? Nice fine highlights. I wrote all this down since I knew she was retiring. Then we went to another colorist who just slaps on pure bleach in big chunks. Not the natural look I prefer on my daughter, but she's 29 now so should be stating her own preferences. I like warm, honey/wheat tones and not stripped white of any natural look whatsoever. Anyway, I thank you for stating what I knew...no toner is needed with high lift or regular color. SO, I want to ask this stylist to stop using pure bleach and do one of your methods...how do I request the highlights we want (English is second language for her). Also do brands really matter?
@haveagoodhairday9 ай бұрын
As long as her hair is not colored with a darker color, then hi lift will be a good option for her instead of bleach! (Hi lift won’t lighten previously colored hair, only bleach will.) I would specifically ask for hi lift color, and bring pictures of what you want as well as what you DON’T want! If she doesn’t use hi lift, I’d look for someone else that does! Hope this helps! ❤️❤️

@@haveagoodhairday I think there is more time involved in Hi Lift process and also products used. I got lost in one of your videos where you mixed three different colors in three different bowls! This lady we go to (she's a bargain at $85 for bleach highlights) would never do all the mixing or buy good color and try to customize. I find most colorists (here in CA anyway) just want to slap on bleach with foils. I will continue to look for someone although my daughter should be doing this (busy medical worker and I'm fascinated with hair color, not her). Thank you for your responses.

You see, she works with brain cancer patients and her life doesn't allow for a lot of focus on herself and personal maintenance. No time, but thanks for giving me your unsolicited parental advice. I currently lift from a level 6 to a 9/10 with cream lightener and 10 volume on the regrowth every 7 weeks. I have tried highlift blonde colors before but they were always very warm and didn’t match my complexion at all. Do you have experience comparing the results of highlift + double 40 volume to cream lightener + 10 volume? I have very fine level 6 hair. I think maybe the highlift with double 40 would not be less damaging than the cream lighter with 10 volume? I really only want 2-3 levels of lift, to a beige blonde .

@haveagoodhairday4 ай бұрын
Unfortunately you can’t use high lift color unless your hair is all completely virgin. Since you have permanent color on it, you’ll need to use bleach to remove the previous dye.

@haveagoodhairday6 ай бұрын
You might like Wella 12/96! I would be careful adding in red additives to hi lift because you’ll already have some residual gold left over from the underlining pigment, so adding red could make it orangey.

@haveagoodhairday4 ай бұрын
You would just want a permanent color! Hi lift is created with extra ammonia to achieve 4-5 levels of lift. If you only want to lift 2 levels, you should only need 20-30 volume with traditional color! Just remember that neither will lift through previously color treated hair

Hi, Thank you, I’m learning so much! I’m wondering if we can get safe lighter blonde results with high lift if after a 2nd or more application? And is it for sure that we won’t need to tone with high lift,,, because I always go orange or yellow with bleach. Next to impossible without messing up my hair to get a level 9 (banana).
@haveagoodhairday4 ай бұрын
So hi lift is only recommended on hair that is a level 6 or lighter, otherwise it’ll be too orange. I do notice that it will bump up another level or so after a second application, but the lifting power is no where near what bleaches lifting power is. So if you’re experiencing orange and yellow with bleach then it would definitely be worse with hi lift unfortunately! You would 100% need to tone the hair after using hi lift if your natural color is dark.
@richardcrows72453 ай бұрын
Would you recommend two sessions with the high lift and would it lighten your hair more? I'm trying to get my hair is blonde as possible without bleach and go back to my dark ashy blonde Farrah fawcett hair color but I usually get that color with bleach . I have a light to medium brown hair . Can I use blonde hair dye once and it got pretty light golden blonde .
@haveagoodhairday3 ай бұрын
The second session with high lift will only bump it another level or so, unlike bleach which has a much higher lifting power. High lift will also only work on virgin hair, so if the hair has been colored before it will not lighten through permanent color!

Thank you for this!! Question. If I want my hair bleached to prep for a vivid, would it makes sense and save my hair a bit to use color to lighten 2 levels and then bleach it with a lower volume?
@haveagoodhairday7 ай бұрын
If you’re going to bleach it anyway, I wouldn’t do the color first. Virgin hair always lifts better than color treated, so you would then be having to lift through the color you did prior. Depending on what vivid you are doing, you could potentially use a high lift to lighten instead of bleach. But it all depends on what starting level is needed for the vivid!

I would like a permanent color option that gets me just 2 levels to an 8 but a beige 8 without revealing the underlying orange. Personally I found that highlift with double 40 volume was more damaging and revealed more warmth than cream lightener + 10 volume.

you didn't do the high lift color correctly. I've been able to lift brown hair to a very blonde color using high lift color but you need to add a booster to it.
@haveagoodhairday7 ай бұрын
Boosters are dependent on the brand! With Pravana, their booster 000 doesn’t actually provide more lifting power. It will merely “brighten” the tone, not “lighten” it more levels. What brand of hi-lift do you use that recommends intermixing boosters?

@haveagoodhairday6 ай бұрын
In my experience Malibu cpr can be unpredictable, but if you’re only wanting to lift 2 levels you should be good with CPR then you can tone it down to the shade you’re looking for! Just know that CPR doesn’t make the hair virgin again and you still won’t be able to lighten it further without using bleach unfortunately. @haveagoodhairday6 ай бұрын
Great question! Yes you can, just know that you’ll have to consider the color left in the hair after the hi lift is done. If there is still gold remaining, that will show up under the semi permanent color that you’re applying. So you’ll need to formulate your semi permanent based on what you’re left with after the hi lift!
