About speaking Spanish - if you use "por favor" (please) and "gracias" (thanks) whenever you ask something or someone does something for you, you will be treated better - you're proving you're a civilized person. If you begin any encounter with "Buenos Dias" (good day) before noon, "Buenas tardes" (good afternoon) between noon and sundown, and "Buenas noches" (good evening) after sundown, you will be starting the encounter politely, and that will smooth whatever else comes next. If it is in a fast moving, crowded fast food place, at least say "Buenas," and then what you want. If you're a visitor, it pays to be as polite or more polite than the local people, not less. And replace "quiero", "I want", with "quisiera", "I would like". "I want" is stronger in Spanish than it is in English, it sounds much more demanding. You will be treated better, and remembered more kindly, if you use "I would like", "quisiera" - kee-see-era. That one change will get you much better treatment in markets and restaurants and ordinary life. It's treating people in shops with respect, rather than ordering them around.
@meditati-15244 жыл бұрын
That's true, everyone here says por favor, gracias, buenos días. etc. We are used to it, and you feel welcomed every place you visit, because there will always be people greeting you and making you feel received. (No one would get angry or it's going to be rude to you for not saying those, but when said, it instantly (wherever you go, not just Mexico) would turn the enviroment into a more friendly one)

In terms of safety, I felt far more unsafe in St Louis and Milwaukee than I did in Mexico City-the only precaution I really took were keeping my phone and wallet in front pockets on the subway and Metrobus. Street food? When I get back to Wisconsin I'm really going to miss 55 pesos for tacos and a cold bottle of Coke

For those thinking about the phones and wallets keep them at hand or put them in a backpack or a small bag you can carry around. Most people have them out for the same reason. If they're in your pocket it's easier to steal. (I usually take the metro to get to school, though public safety has been getting better in this administration)

So glad you liked our beautiful city! We really appreciate when people come to find out what Mexico is really like beyond all the bad news coverage we get abroad and bring those experiences back to your home countries. You're very welcome to return whenever you please and enjoy our food and culture. I'm pretty sure you tried atole, which goes hand in hand with tamales. Fun fact about tamales dulces: coloring them bright pink is only a thing in Mexico City and surrounding states, elsewhere they're plain corn dough color (Pronunciation tip, dulce is pronounced "dool-seh," that ch sound is Italian). I happen to love tacos al pastor, although I'm on your side about pineapple, I always order them without. Not that uncommon. Awesome that you tried seafood too (like those hot peppers stuffed with ceviche you mentioned, yum!) and pambazos. For those who prefer veggie options, rajas, nopales, flor de calabaza (pumpkin flowers) and huitlacoche are a must try.

Like you and others here, when I went to Mexico City, I had the time of my life. That was 5 years ago, and I’m planning on at least 2 visits this year. The food was spectacular and am so glad I took a food tour of el centro. I speak Spanish and have learned that I need more practice but I don’t feel so intimidated. Going on self guided walking tours was fun. 6 years of Spanish meant learning the culture. That made reading a breeze! I had family and friends beg me not to go. I’m so glad I didn’t listen. Now I can show those nervous Nellies my pix-the best souvenirs money can’t buy. I was 59 the first time. Now at 64 I can hardly wait to get there again! Go to Mexico!

One of the conquistadors who accompanied Hernan Cortes in his conquest of Mexico was Pedro de Alvarado. The Aztec and other indians referred to him as Tonatiuh-their sun god- because of his bright red hair, beard and cold blue eyes. Kind of like you. Comments from a Mexican: Historical sites: We have tons. Visit the Museo de Antropología e Historia, Templo Mayor, for example. The whole downtown is full of museums. Pay attention: Yes, please! Always see on both sides of the streets. You need to be attentive if you are a pedestrian. Be attentive even if you are driving, especially if you are in a motorcycle. Traffic can get crazy. Clean sidewalks: it depends on the neighborhood. You can ask street vendors to take care of your trash if you have any. Cash is king: yes. Bring change if you'll use public transportation. Green public spaces: depends on the neighborhood. Chapultepec is king. Check out the markets: you can find everything, lots of colors and sights. Everything is on Spanish. México City is unsafe: just like any other city. Take basic precautions: don't carry expensive jewelry if your on foot and public transportation and be attentive of your belongings and surroundings. Learn of the neighborhood that you are visiting. You'll be fine. Much more than tacos: YES!!! (And there are many types of tacos, too.) Al pastor : to each their own! But taste them! Seafood: avoid street tacos on this one, or ask a local to see which ones are fresh. Sweet tamal: street tamales are best. Also, taste pineapple tamal. Some places also sell chocolate and blueberry with cheese. Favorites! How to find good street food: ask a local, see if they have a lot of people, see that the person who is handling the money uses a plastic bag as a glove or someone who does not touches the food handles the money. Getting sick? : some people do get sick. Buy Pepto-Bismol. Also, eat little salsa or spicy food and adjust as you feel comfortable (don't trust a Mexican, we measure if food is hot in a different level). Aaaand, if you are unsure of hygiene, avoid cilantro, lettuce, radish, etc. in your street tacos. Don't drink water from the kitchen tap. No English: true. To experience Mexico you will need Spanish, or to find a guide. We are happy to help! Mexicans are patient if you are struggling with the language, so don't be shy. Ask questions: Yes! We love your curiosity! Lucha fight : they are very fun! Go and shout like crazy! Welcoming people: most people are :) We hope to see you!

Well, something that few people is going to tell you about food in Mexico, specially street food, is that a big part of the flavors are meant to be season to your own taste; that means the idea is that you initially taste the "original" version of something, and according to what you liked or not about that initial flavor, you add or remove certain ingredients or complements you don´t like. For example, I never add lettuce to my tacos, sopes, pambazos, pozole, quesadillas or tortas, because for me it takes out a lot of the original flavor. Same with tacos al pastor, when I was a kid, I always asked them without the pineapple, but with time I started to liking it but with a reasonable amount of pineapple. Another example is coriander and onion, that is supper common to add to your street tacos, so common that in some places they don´t even ask you and if you want them without them or add it at your own taste, you have to ask for it while ordering them. I personally only add a bit of coriander. All that are some hacks that they don´t tell you, as a Mexican you discover them with your own experience, and I think this is something that a lot of foreigners should consider while eating in Mexico. There is not such a thing as "standard street food" it is meant to be personalized according to you, thats one of the reasons why it is so great and everybody loves it.
@ethanchlebowskimultiverse4 жыл бұрын
Yup that’s exactly why I love street food, you can make it taste exactly how you want it with the toppings and salsas, etc.

Peatones (walking people) are always in control. If you cross the street the car will stop but we don’t do that because we stop the flow. If we stop the car then we have tu run because is impolite to walk being waited for. So instead of stopping the car and then run we give pass to the car by waiting, the car will pass in two seconds and then we can walk slowly across the street and then the flow is not broken. That also applies to the word AHORITA. That word means I will do that when the flow of things tells me its time., if you are in the flow you will be in synchronization with all. If you are impatient you will miss enjoying the ebb and flow Mexican Time.

Estos norteños oye, no les hagas caso, no han probado las tortas al pastor del borrego viudo con su salsa secreta o los tacos al pastor de los cuñados en Atotonilco el Alto.

As a Mexican whenever I go to a Taqueria, I never, but never ask for Taco al Pastor. Is not that great and there are plenty of choices.

Why most visitors have a question on visiting our country? There are conflicts in evry country, It is up to the tourist where to go, to take care of oneself etc.

Anytime someone visits any country for the first time there are going to be questions. Sharing the experiences is a way to break down those barriers.

I agree al pastor are overrated but they're still very good. Tacos arabes, Marlin, birria, camaron enchilado and carne asada with flour tortilla are better imo. If you liked Contramar you should check out baja/sinaloa/sonora style seafood.
@ethanchlebowskimultiverse4 жыл бұрын
I definitely need to check out Baja and Sonora style stuff.

@@ethanchlebowskimultiverse I'll be there in June and October 😎, I could be your guide! 😉 I recommend you to try "torta al pastor" (is made with not pineapple) also "torta de pierna adobada" 😍

TAMALES are awesome right!? when you get the chance try some tamales oaxaqueños, different kind of tamal but bro it's even better, if you ever come to the city again and you think I could help you, I'll be glad to join. About the tacos al pastor, yeah you need to go to the suburbs to get the real deal hahaha. MEXICO IS ONLY GETTING BETTER. More life, more blessings!

They are easily one of my favorites. I love the texture. What's different about tamales oaxaquenos? Unfortunately, I didn't hear of them while I was in CDMX!
@lugefuco4 жыл бұрын
@@ethanchlebowskimultiverse The main difference is the texture of the batter, in tamales oaxaqueños it is not fluffy but dense and also the tamales are not wrapped in corn husk but in banana leaves
@ethanchlebowskimultiverse4 жыл бұрын
@@lugefuco Oh I may have had one of these then! I stopped a tamale cart for a tamal dulce late at night and it was in a green banana leaf. I did notice a texture difference that I really like.

our city is wonderful, weather is good most part of the year and the food is one of a kind!, you can enjoy what this city is about if you find a local to guide you around the city. It hurt my feeling when you said tacos al pastor arent that good hahaha, anyone coming to Mexico should try tacos de suadero and campechanos, the're sooooooooo good! Also, if anyone is willing to come to Mexico City and it's interested on doing some luxury shopping and you are willing to get tax refund, lemme know!
@ethanchlebowskimultiverse4 жыл бұрын
Completely agreed. I do love suadero and campechancos!

Pastor tacos are sacred in Mexico. Too bad no one let you know you can have them without pineapple. Guadalajara, the second largest metropolis, has amazing pastor tacos filled with tasty, juicy, finger-licking well seasoned tender meat.

Pastor tacos at fancy places are never good. You need to ask around to find places with the real deal.
@ethanchlebowskimultiverse4 жыл бұрын
I tried 5 about different places in total from nice places to taquerias off a side street. The best one I had was where they chopped the pineapple in small pieces with the meat and slightly fried it before adding it to the tortilla.
