Just as Alien: Isolation is an amazing game which I will never play due to the extraordinary pain and sensitivity of my startle reflex, I glad to know that another respectable Alien film has been made.

I loved it as well. I didnt find it all that scary or frightening but I thought it did tension really well. It kept ratcheting up the stress higher and higher AND HIGHER.

I like Alien 3. The Assembly Cut is fantastic. Alien Romulus is brilliant ,I enjoyed it. You can see the people making it were fans of the first two Movies. I give credit to the Actor who plays Andy he was brilliant. He had to play two different parts of Andy. Not easy to do. Rain is also a fantastic character and well acting. I love how it went back to being scary and good horror.. Fantastic review as always Daniel.. I agree with what you said

It's strange to consider myself an Alien films fan... and be so perpetually upset by each film that comes out. I need to stress that I'm not a Mad at Movies Guy. To the contrary, I'm pretty aggressively optimistic about things that cater to me and I'm just exhausted by the 'angry for clicks' default settings of the internet. When I started to hear positive reviews of Alien: Romulus... I got scared. Do I dare hope again? If Dan says I should hope again, damn it, I hope again. BRB, heading to the theater right now.

100% agree on your feelings about Rook. Everytime he was on screen I felt uncomfortable, and not in the good horror movie way. Also your feelings on the human alien hybrid. I'm fine that they did it, but the design didn't quite feel right, and if they had kept it more in the shadows, I think that would have been best. But it was an amazing movie!

For the first time in I can't remember how long, I'm heeding the spoiler warning & getting out at the 12:40 mark. BUT I appreciate the recommendation and may be back to either confirm or contest this "asterisk" of which you speak 😉

Aliens is literally my favorite film of all time. I have a lot of feelings about the series and also went into this new movie with some hesitation. But...the idea of a genuinely good Alien film being released in my lifetime was just...so enticing, ya know? So yeah, I was thrilled to at how good Romulus was. Some amazing thrills, scares (the facehuggers creeped me out), and a clear love for the franchise - I was onboard. I love how much was done practically, how seamlessly they made nods to the previous films. I do have my criticisms too but overall, I had an amazing time watching it. I'm glad you did too P.s. I like Alien 3 too.

Loved this film. Had a great time and would definitely put it at number 3 in my movie ranking of the franchise. That being said, I agree that the Rook thing really threw me off. On one hand I like the idea of each batch of androids sharing the same face as was established with David and Walter. And on the other, it looked terrible. And felt... off since yeah, he's no longer with us. But as you say, it's not for us to state whether it's okay to use his likeness if those closest to him okayed it, I guess. But if they were gonna do it, they should've worked on those effects longer because 😬

First, thanks for all the bts footage in this review! I had no idea so much of the movie's effects were practical. It's made me appreciate the film even more. SPOILERS! I liked Rook in theory and even in execution. The effect didn't bother me, it was the wardrobe. Silly and nitpicky but that's the way I felt. The one thing that jerked me out of the movie was the repeated iconic line. For anyone who watches this series in chronological order will have the line's power diminished almost entirely. Other than that, I had a good time! My top 3 are Aliens, Alien 3, Alien tied with Romulus.

imo incredibly strong start, good middle, the main climax of the story ( the 'Aliens' section) was so contrived and flabby that it ruined the whole movie, and then the final section was deeply unsettling but didnt manage to bring back my enthusiasm and i left the cinema feeling nothing. Also, love prometheus, alien 3 AND avpr lol. im expecting to like it better on repeat viewing since the sort of feeling of being like 'all that tension building for THAT climax?' wont matter as much

I was fine with Rook as a character, but I wanted him to be a fully practical animatronic (the uncanniness and puppetiness would’ve only enhanced the effect of a broken android). Otherwise I agree on all accounts

Allegedly only for tidying lip sync. The head was made as a practical animatronic in his likeness that had to be puppeteered apparently.

i may give romulus a spin sooner rather than later then. its inevitable for me to see any entry into the alien(s) franchise but after so many misses it gets hard to jump on new ones too fast.

I kind of wish I saw the same movie. Because for me, the memberberries where just too pervasive for me to get engaged with anything. And I ended up questioning pretty much everything. Everything from how blatantly evil the Wey/Yu company is portrayed, I always umderstood them more as evil in its lack of care in the chase of profits, and less actively slave driving people to death. They kept the populace docile and happy and swept accidental genocides under the rug with Gilliam-esque beurocracy. From that to Ian Holms lazily reheated appearance. The off putting reused lines. This felt so much like a cynical and lazy Ridley Scott wanting to remake Resrrection (of all entries) for the youngsters without understanding what even that hated film brought to the franchise. And as we got to the "get away from her". I was so close to blurting out loudly "aw come on!" As the line does not even work contextually in the narrative. I get the feeling fede had an interesting movie at one point. The start hints at that. But after the first thirty or so minutes. The notes from the studio (including Ridley) just became too overbearing so it became a "one for them, one for me deal".

This plot was written for a story set after aliens. The one thing you would be careful with scripting alien 1.5 is the consistency with Aliens. This is the one thing never addressed. There is no way you would drag that out over 2 or more movies. Take out the prolog and black goo, change the final monster. This explains why James Cameron would be pissed. Explains the pulse rifle being advanced. Explains why this is a greatest hits, because the tone was lighter and it would be more appropriate. If not, the script is just thoughtless. This is compromised, which is why it's devisive. It was never meant to dovetail anything.

Prometheus and its sequel were objectively worse than anything else in the franchise due to how they retroactively make the plots of all the movies hinge on "Ancient Aliens did Evolution/life on Earth" as the most important lore rather than the cosmic horror of "We don't Know anything about where these things came from".

While I liked a lot of the ideas from Prometheus and Covenant I didn't really enjoy them. Sure I liked Walter and the Neomorph idea along with talks of art and creation but I just didn't like the other characters and some of it was too stupid. Romulus has two leads I adore, supporting cast is good, except for Bjord or 'W***er' as I call him but y'know that's the point of him. It's stuff we've seen before but we got some new spins, they used the alien's acid a lot and really I enjoyed it way more than the last two films. There's one callback or call forward I groaned inwardly at but some people are acting like there is a reference/nod every few seconds like The Big Bang Theory or something. Really solid I give it 4/5. Then again I should warn that I'm one of the weird people that really likes Alien 3 warts and all.
