Should You Watch Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur?

It's often said that after Amphibia and The Owl House ended, the era of story-driven Disney cartoons have come to an end. But is that really true? An era for Disney TVA has definitely ended, but not necessarily the story-driven era. Shows like The Ghost and Molly McGee and Hailey's On It are just some of the cartoons that are still going and are story-driven. But the best example of this era still being alive is Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, and here's why you should watch it.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is definitely worth the watch, and while it does have good superhero elements from Marvel, what makes it so good is that it mainly has Lunella deal with everyday issues while her superhero life is secondary. After how season 1 ended, I can't wait for season 2.

In many ways, Moongirl is basically Marvel's Static Shock. A half super hero, half slice of life show about a black teen living a double life as a super hero, supported by their best friend, and sometimes dealing with heavier issues not normally discussed in western animation. While Static's topics were certainly heavier, I've yet to see Lunela dealing with anything like school shootings or homelessness, they still manage to talk about important issues in a productive way. They even both had an episode about racisim, with Lunela dealing with the insecurity of being looked down on for her natural hair, and Virgil dealing with finding out his best friend's father is racist. Again, MGADD isn't quite as heavy as Static, but considering how censorship works now compared to the early 2000's, I think it's understandable.

5:38 I still think The Beyonder will be the final boss villain for the show, despite his quirky goofy personality. Like The Spot, he may appear to be a villain-of-the-week, but he could turn into a real menacing antagonist later on.

This is the best show from Disney TVA. The textures and colors, the music and animation are all designed. Yes even the animation was designed, not just characters and backgrounds- so even the way things move, is unique to the show and designed to convey a state of mind. The gesture drawings are strong and show momentum. The animation has overlap and followthrough motion. DTVA is doing everything it can to make sure shows like this cannot be made anymore by gutting the department. They want to make sure that all we get is shows with characters with perfectly round eyes, no gesture or velocity, their features not really squishing beyond what their prefab libraries will allow, who all look like they were drawn with a perfect stencil like kiff and Owlhouse. Its because shows like that require little preproduciton or traditional animation or design bibles because they can be rigged like an RPG video game character creation screen. But MoonGirl can't. The designs in Moongirl require inspired plays on shapes. The Ghost and Molly Mcgee (the 2nd best DTVA show) is the only other show that bothers really deforming and animating their characters, but MoonGirl is better because Moongirl isn't rigged in harmony like MollyMcgee is.

This might be the best thing that Marvel has released this year. The song is so good too; it really captures the energy of the show. The show is so hard to find on Disney+. After scrolling and scrolling, I had to finally do a search to find it. I wish the two would be part of the next Spider-verse chapter.

I really like Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. This along with Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 and Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse are the Marvel projects that I had a fantastic time with the most this year.

[MY OPINION] The Marvel stuff actually ENHANCES my enjoyment of the show! Of course, this show is so good even if you remove the Marvel stuff, but I'm just such a fan of the I.P that knowing it has roots of that puts a big smile on my face. Still! Not only do I watch Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, I LOVE IT! Seriously, it's one of the few pieces of superhero media that I actually enjoy watching; next to Young Justice, My Adventures with Superman and the last Spiderman cartoon. It's funny, it's adventurous, has great comedy, lovable characters and best of all, wonderful/memorable music. But perhaps; one of its best aspects is all the forms of representation it has from Jewish culture, Black culture and LGBTQ+ representation. It's one of the places that first introduced me to non-binary people out there...but I'm still confused as to what makes someone thus. In the character of Tai, for example, he LOOKS male but has some feminine personality traits and mannerisms

I liked Devil Dinosaur from Hulk & The Agents of S.M.A.S.H & Avengers Assemble. “Especially a brief appearance on that 1 episode of Guardians of the Galaxy.” This one from the new show Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur is a little different from the more serious Disney Marvel’s shows that I’ve recently seen. It’s like the animation from 101 Dalmatian Street. “Not to mention it’s like an animated comic book come to life.” However, I still have an interest on Dinosaurs. Especially the popular species Devil Dinosaur is based on. In other words, a Tyrannosaurs Rex. I’m calling the new Disney Marvel’s show Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur a 2 out of 3.

Okay so here is the thing with Moon Girl is because I read the comics and so naturally I know what Moon Girl is like and I expected it to like how she is in the comics but nope I find it unbelievable that she is this joyful in this show compared to how she is in the comics and I was seriously ready for Devil and her to not get along at first and then gradually grow a friendship but nope they became friends from the start and another thing is Moon Girl never had friends she just had any member of the avengers as her friends like Ironheart, Professor Hulk, The Fantastic Four, Ms. Marvel, but anyone else she never really showed any attachment to and I honestly like the anti social moon girl better it was more funny in my opinion

This is actually pretty common in Marvel and DC shows, at least with the ones I've seen. It's basically just an officially licensed AU, which again, is the same for a lot of Marvel/DC comics that get turned into shows or movies. Static Shock, Teen Titans, and Big Hero 6 are all shows that were very good for what they were, but vastly differentiated from their comic counterparts. Point is, you pretty much have to separate the comics from the shows. It doesn't make either side bad, just different.

I've chosen not to watch the show because I'm guessing it will have a sad ending. Probably Devil returning to the past and Lunella losing him. I made the same decision for The Ghost and Molly McGee for the same reason, and I was correct.

If you want to discuss Marvel shows I would say look at Spider-Man (1994) X-Men, , Fantastic Four, Iron Man, The Avengers: United They Stand (my start) The Spectacular Spider-Man (2008) , X-Men: Evolution, Fantastic Four: World's Greatest Heroes, Wolverine and the X-Men, The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes (where people younger then me started) Ultimate Spider-Man (2012) , Avengers Assemble, Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.,Guardians of the Galaxy, Big Hero Six, (the Disney era) Spider-Man (2017 TV series), Marvel Future Avengers (the point where my interest dropped) Spider-Verse films (the reason why I gave Moon Girl a chance) I would also check out Static Shock, Kipo and the Age of Wonder beasts, Infinity Train, The Mitchells vs. the Machines, Hamster and Gretel, Big City Greens , Camp Camp, Sumer Camp Island, Miraculpouse Ladybug , GEEKER, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Boondocks, Karma's World, 12 Forever, Glitch Techs, Hilda, which were all shows I had in my head to gage the quality of the show. Will it be better or worse then ... Whil "Marvel" was a factor so was art style , setting, culture, Dinosaurs, music, character chemistry etc I would often put it against an other better or worse show to see how it stacked up. Good news, it always impressed me and made me wish we had it sooner. Having it BEFORE the Disney Buy out of Marvel would have exposed people to a new culture and new ideas a lot sooner and would have made it a sad casualty of Disney that we wanted brought back but then it would have been rebooted in a disappointing way before coming back real awesome. It could have had the same story arc as Superman or Spiderman or X-Men a show that was always there waiting and Black Panther would not be held as "The 1st Black Super hero" Moon Girl would be. Instead of giving us a legacy, we got an introduction. Introductions are cool and maybe if I got this musical series after a serious drama i would have seen this younger more playful version as a Teen Titans Go. But since it was the introduction it was a hit. But had it been a Legacy I would be waiting for each next character to take there destoned path in the lore. Which is how I watch "My Adventures with Superman" Moon Girl could have been the Marvel Counterpart to My Adventures of Superman if had it stared a decade or two sooner. Instead its new, its fresh its existing. and yet I feel mad that she never had a cameo on Ultimate Spiderman or Avengers Assemble I think Devel was in Hulk and the Agents of SMASH but its not enough. I like how things went NOW but I some times wonder, what if? What if we had gotten this around the same time as Static or Spectacular Spiderman? What if we had gotten in in the Marvel Burn out chunk? or as a Live Action movie 1st? Maybe a new show NOW was the best path for it?
