What Eighty Six does so well, is not overly emphasizing on character deaths (those still hurts), but the effects of their deaths on those who survived. While there are immediate impacts, such as Theo blowing up on Lena after Kaie, and heart-broken Anju after Daiya, as the story progresses their deaths will continue to resonate with the cast. They carry those deaths with them, just as people do in real life when they lose someone close. In episode 5, during the flashback scene to Rei, when he first mentioned Shin he snapped his chocolate bar and gave half of it to Lena, symbolizing the breaking of their brotherly bond, and that Shin will be in Lena's hands. Later on, when Shin revealed to Lena the Legions are cannibalizing human brains, they showed wilted flowers -- the very same flower Kaie was watering when she was introduced in episode 1. As Shin continued his explanation, an insect took an anther (bean/brain like thing in a flower where the pollen is) with it, suggesting that the Legion took Kaie after her death. Did you notice Lena changed the flowers in her room in episode 6? She used to salute white magnolia every morning. That's the state flower of the Republic. Now she has replaced them with colored flowers and salute them together with the fallen dead in her glass shrine. Little by little, Lena is identifying more with the Colorata (what the silvery Alba calls every other race), the Eighty Six who are doing the fighting and dying. This show is adept at using the visual medium to "show, not tell" the audience important story elements. Hats off to the director and production team at A-1.

Those who missed this details and complain about it are not ready for this kind of shows. It really irks me off when they claim its "mid" while they didn't even pay attention.

Kaie was responsible for flowers in their dorm. That's why they show us a shot with withered flowers and the fallen one

Not only that, they show an insect taking one of the anther (bean/brain looking thing) from the stamen of Kaie's dead flower, symbolizing the Legion has taken her. This show excels at using visual symbolization to compliment its story telling.

86 is really good at attaching you to characters right before ending them. I like how you remember all the characters and there scenes, when I watched for the first time I barely knew who was who, so when they died I’d be like what did they do again? W reaction as always

I ADORE 86. 120%. Now, this watch through finally hit me - there are details that sound out question you had since your first watch, that you may not catch until you 2nd, 3rd, 4th watch. DD, when you were pondering on why Rei may have blamed Shin for their family being killed...I realized a likely connection that, while I put it together some time earlier, I only now consciously "got it." This show drags your face through so much mystery and tragedy and wonder, only to surprise you with answers when you least look for them. 86 will go down in history, like Vivy, Dress Up Darling, and Nagatoro, as an anime product which inspired unique, fervent enthusiasm in the fans, due to having an exceptionally bold, complex flavour of it's own. I ain't a huge mecha anime watcher. You know...some Gundam growing up, Darling in the Franxx when I first got into anime, Code Geass had some cool bot armours. However, I am ALL about the complexities and problems with the machines the 86 get saddled with. though, 86, to me, isn't so much "mecha" as it is "military/drama/post-apocalyptic/cerebral/political." And, lots of tears. Damn it. Guess I'll watch episode 22 now, after rewatching 21. No one around this time of night to see me get worked up.

The Republic used to be mixed with all kinds of races of people, but after the Legion attacked anyone not an "Alban" ie silver hair and eyes, was deemed "not human" and categorized as "86 because of the district they were all forced into.

You mean the Republic, as in the San Magnolia Republic. The Federation is another entity. :)

If you are a 86 then to save your family you have to go to battle and earn rights to live a normal life. Shin's mom and dad went to battle to obtain rights for their both sons but they died. When Shorei got the death news he was not emotionally stable so he blamed Shin and choked him hence giving him the scar. Then after Shorei died Shin had to go battle at the age of 12.
