I was involved in a lot of different sports, and road cycling had the biggest group of complainers of all of them. I discovered as I raced longer that it wasn’t just complaining for the sake of it; riders could shame other riders into doing more work than they wanted to. It works on new riders or lesser riders, but I came to notice riders usually started complaining right about the time they were nearly out of energy, and it was my cue to start punishing them to try to drop them. Most often, winners were too busy crushing everyone to be chatting during a race. There’s also nothing more satisfying than causing an adult to throw a temper tantrum in a sport and then beat them.

This is common practice in cycle racing. A rider will often go in a breakaway group to cause disruption in that group,as they will have a team mate in the main group that has a good chance of winning the stage/tour. It is a very tactical sport,and I love it because of this.

The situation you describe is common practice. But riders like her also do it with no teammates behind just because they hope to save energy whil others are wasting theirs. Which is also quite a common scenario in cycling, but if you are the one that is always trying to benefit from other riders work you will not be liked by other riders or the general public. Doing it sometimes is smart, doing it all the time is just annoying. Plus a rider like her actually does not seem to realize that she is also hurting her own chances. She has won very few races in her career even though she is one of the strongest riders, and she partly has herself to blame for it,

This is me on the trail when I ride up from behind someone and pass them because the pace that I've set for myself for the day is faster than the pace they've accept themselves, and as I pass them the accelerate, sometimes trying to run me off the trail or into the oncoming walkers or cyclists. Then they try to hang with me, as if they're saying no you're not passing me I'm faster than you. Like it's, bro, you were riding your ride I was riding my ride I'm passing you riding my ride and my pace. I had a dude do this to me yesterday, killing himself to keep up with me, and eventually cut out a section of the trail across the road to get ahead of me and I still almost passed him a second time. Weirdo. And I was riding casual, he looked to be about 10 years younger at least than my 50 something years and he definitely was about 70 lb lighter than me, his bike looked to be about as good as mine so he's kind of a twit. And it was also the last ride of my week as well. I'm not sure, but I think he was just starting his ride and I was halfway through a 20 mile ride when we met. There's a lot of douches on the backs of bikes, I'm sorry but it's true. This incident was not an isolated event but one of many anecdotes i've experienced as a solo cyclist.

She can't talk, she's one of the worst offenders. See the world championships in Australia last year. It's on KZbin. She was in a leading group of five with no teammates behind. She would do the odd false pull for 15 seconds before pulling over. In the last 5 km, nothing. The result ? No one in that five ended up on the podium. This is why she is despised amongst the peleton.

I’ve always thought that cycling was always about just a cyclist and their bicycle, supported by a full team of riders, supported by a fleet of vehicles, managed remotely by a data crunching team manager. Truly, a simple sport indeed.

@@someperson8151 agreed. I think that lady is doing the correct move. You catch a breakaway to bring it back or link the two( if your teams not there). Why pull for someone that isn’t your teammate?

Even if she's not helping her team, she is under no obligation to push the breakaway forward. She might just be trying to keep up with the front while conserving as much energy as possible and not actually care that much if the main group catches them. It's her choice. If others in the breakaway want is to stay ahead, they're gonna have to put in the work.

I'd just like to see them just slow down and let that person who is not doing any work get away alone. Then, have four of them chase her down at the last moment.
@tychoMX

would not work. Either the rider just slows to a standstill or just catches back up as the riders overtake her. What works is systematically attack them in turns. At some point someone gets away and the wheelsucker gets stuck behind the unlucky person that didn't get away. The wheelsucker is always depending on the breakaway needing to work together to stay away. Might even be by design - if the Cofidis rider here is NOT the designated leader her job would be to either get a free ride to the finish or disrupt the group enough so that the team leader can catch up and get a result.

If 100 riders start a 100 mile race, why often happens is that a small handful of riders will ride away from the rest at an early part of the race. They are gambling that, if they work hard enough, the large group behind them may not be able to catch them before the finish. If the breakaway riders want the best chance of success, they will rotate who is in the front of their little group (the front rider uses significantly more energy because they have to cut through the wind; the riders behind the front rider conserve energy). The odds are against the breakaway because if there are five of them taking turns, and each rider is doing an equal share, they are all at the front 1/5 of the time, while the riders in the larger bunch behind them are only contending with the wind 1/95 of the time, so they use less energy. The breakaway riders often don’t do equal work at the front, though. One rider might be stronger than the rest, so the rest will try to wear out the strongest before the finish. (There are many reasons why a rider won’t contribute to the breakaway they are in, sometimes for the simple reason that they are exhausted and simply can’t muster any more energy). No matter the reason, the sooner the breakaway stops working together, the more likely it is they will be caught by the larger group behind, so when riders inevitably stop working together, sometimes frustration flares up in those who want the breakaway to keep sharing the work.

In my experience "good" cycling tactics are v much dictated by circumstance, that is the same rider may decide it is in their best interest to take a turn pulling in a breakaway or not depending on a number of factors of which wider race dynamics and personal state of fitness are just two. Fundamental approach is flawed
