Yeah, I think the designs in ENT were too preoccupied with looking "like Star Trek" and missed out on a lot of cool opportunities for the show to have a real character of its own. On the opposite end, I think Disco did too much to create its own design character and really lost a lot of its connections to the rest of Star Trek, ending up having just another generic sci-fi aesthetic. It really is a shame, especially when we see fans making amazing stuff like this.

I must express my profuse admiration for this design, and the effort that went into it. The design feels so complete, functional and compact, making it look like it is packed to the brim with real equipment and machinery, everything it could possibly need. Not only that, but it is the perfect representation of an early future Earth ship, what with the clear ISS influences and scientifically accurate designs. This is exactly what I imagine future starships would look like. Very, very well done. Do you plan on modelling the full interior?

That's just the thing, @Optillian. This isn't "technobabble", like the vast majority of technology in Trek. This is based on REAL engineering principles.
@protoborg
@protoborg 3 жыл бұрын
@@solarisone1082 No it isn't. Warp plasma is, by definition, technobabble. Plasma is not a thing. Plasma is a state of matter. Plasma is an ionized gas consisting of positive ions and free electrons in proportions resulting in more or less no overall electric charge, typically at low pressures (as in the upper atmosphere and in fluorescent lamps) or at very high temperatures (as in stars and nuclear fusion reactors). Since a fusion reactor behaves VERY differently from an antimatter reactor, the very idea of using plasma as a medium in which to carry the energy is ridiculous. First, antimatter reactors do not produce any heat or plasma. Second, the energy released (what form of energy it might be) is 100% energy. This means you would NOT need to cool unless it was pure thermal energy. If it were you certainly wouldn't want to reduce the available energy. Third, unless you are intending to use thermal energy (which would mean you want ALL of it), the heat produced by any sort of power source would be recycled into the process or radiated away from the source directly.
@gordonpromish9218
@gordonpromish9218 3 жыл бұрын
@@protoborg - the annihilation of matter and antimatter releases radiant energy (or EM radiation). whatever handwavium roddenberryistic physics is involved in generating a warp field, it will require that released EM to interact with matter in order to be put to work. when EM interacts with matter it produces material excitement which eventually and inevitably translates as heat. basic thermodynamics limits "recycling" the heat back into the process, as heat tends to move from higher concentration to lower concentration. And vacuum sucks (sorry) as a medium for passive radiative cooling. so, yeah, the ship would need some kind of active cooling system, preferably located so as to prevent heat from the warp nacelles from diffusing into the main hull and living spaces.
@protoborg
@protoborg 3 жыл бұрын
@@gordonpromish9218 I'm not sure how you could be any more wrong. First, an antimatter reactor doesn't RELEASE shit. The reaction CONVERTS the matter and antimatter INTO energy. It sure as hell isn't electromagnetic energy. That would make the containment field all but useless. Second, you can't assume the energy is of a frequency that would induce heat in matter. Only certain frequencies of energy are capable of inducing heat in an object. Unless the reaction produces nothing but IR, microwave, or ultraviolet radiation, you won't get any heat. Microwaves only work in things which contain liquid. Ultraviolet comes from large light sources. Infrared must be highly concentrated. In other words, the likelihood of an antimatter reactor generating heat directly is astonishingly slim. You don't know how a nuclear reactor works, do you? Most of the heat produced is recycled to increase efficiency. As for the heat going from high concentration to low, that is under normal conditions and is how heat works ON ITS OWN. Man-made systems can do whatever the hell they want with the heat. That is the whole principle behind a heat pump, you fucking idiot! You do realize "active" cooling is all about using the cold of space to cool the system down, right? The ISS passes a high pressure ammonia through huge radiators to release tons of IR radiation. Now why do you suppose that is? Could it be because space is fucking cold as hell?! A starship is moving a whole hell of a lot faster. Thus, it needs no active cooling system as the heat would simply bleed away into space. Plus, starships routinely spend long periods of time in deep space away from radiant sources of heat. In other words, they get really bloody cold on the outside. Also, whatever heat might be produced by the various systems on-board are how they keep the crew from freezing to death. Space is at a temperature of -455 F. That is 2.7 degrees above ABSOLUTE zero. The ship would NOT need any kind of active cooling system in deep space as the cold of space works just fine to cool the ship. As a matter of fact, the ship needs HEATERS in order to keep the crew from freezing to death. If the warp nacelles did produce heat, the heat would be routed throughout the ship as an easy way of keeping the crew and ship's systems from freezing. FYI, space at the upper edge of the atmosphere (and on the surface of the light side of the moon) is 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Of course, that's only because they are in direct "view" of the light of the sun.

this ship definitely has the feel of a pre tos starship, my idea of a pre tos ship was always informed by a tos era novel where such a ship is found and described as being of a similar shape to the Enterprise but smaller and with much exposed components. Roddenberrys ethos for design was that the visual simplicity indicated the high state of advancement of the 1701, making the Pacific right in line with that concept.

I'm not sold on the upper observation deck being to manually check the nacelles. If so then the windows should be more to the sides and are not needed at the front. I also think that if the nacelles were showing visible signs of damage that can't be picked up by monitoring systems then you're probably screwed. It would make more sense if the windows were more oriented to the sides and had a function such as manual oversight of the nacelles being attached to the ship. Great ship though and thanks for the heads up about the film.

Great aesthetic and well thought out design. I totally dig it. The "whiskers" off the saucer could be long range HF radio/subspace antennae. This is akin to modern day horizontal HF antennae projecting off the decks of aircraft carriers.
@protoborg
@protoborg 3 жыл бұрын
Wrong. Aircraft carriers are not travelling through the dust filled expanses of space. Anything sticking off the side of a spaceship is going to either rip loose from inertia or get torn off by the dust it collects as the ship moves through space. Plus, why the fuck would anyone use radio to communicate across the vastness of space? Radio waves are VERY slow. That's why Neil Armstrong had trouble communicating with Earth from the Moon. There is no way in hell Star Fleet would use radio to communicate across thousands of light years.

I've been a ST fan since the early 70s & have long imagined what the beginning of warp drive might have looked like before the era of Federation Starships. Wow the detailing on this is fantastic. I'm a huge fan of design with purpose and not just "it looks cool." If something can be both it's even better. There's a subconscious sense of realism that comes from designs that have functional intent that a lot of scifi lacks. Then things are just blobs and shapes without meaning our brains tend to dismiss them as fake. What are you using to model and what are you using to show it off in for the video? Also what's the poly count like? It previews really well in real time.

I love that someone can tell how much you love Star Wars just from the design of this, yet it still looks very Starfleet. I'd say the little observation deck on the Nacelle Mount Spine is what first screamed it at me, but the specific greeblies and the antenna dishes as well as just the geometry all have just a little Empire to them. Which is a good thing! I think Star Trek's design language could do with a little grit! Not every ship needs 24 foot long skylights across half of A deck, sometimes they need exposed equipment and actual radiators!

A really detailed look at the life support module for engineering is long overdue in the Trek universe, you seem like the right person to fill that vacuum. I am deeply impressed with your work. Hopefully you will contract with Indy film makers like myself at a reasonable rate. I think your 3D models could enhance many low budget films. Bravo sir!

Sir, a very interesting combination of Star Trek and real-world technology. It certainly makes for a UNIQUE-looking ship. Well designed. Stands out. Would be an extra cool model to sit on a shelf somewhere. I wish to see what you have done with this. Keep going!

Well done! I see far too many Star Trek fans that are frankly offended by the JJ-verse or anything new, so I admire the courage taken to create new Trek! I, for one am really exited to watch this film next year or this year😉

This is a fantastic design that integrates Trak with modern US Navy, real space and just a bit of Yamato. Excellent ship, I'd love to see your other non trek designs.

Wow. Dantius and several before me sum up my thoughts. I just couldn't take the time to continue while raising kids, not having space nor time and I've still got packed away original S.Trek, S.Wars, The Yamato and several dozen more unbuilt models. I ended up with some ready made quality diecast, figurines and pictures. But I envy your skill and love seeing what you've done, explained and videoed. Thank you !!!

I absolutely love your ship's design. Have you considered printing out some blueprints and schematics of the Pacific? Or posters of the ship? Your ship would make a great model kit. Has anyone contacted you about that possibility? Good luck with your project.
