Looking good Steve! Glad to see some more Mr. Jones vids. For me, this is one of the more interesting channels on all of KZbin. I will explain further. My brother and were at the Moultrie swap meet where your brother bought it. We thought that car is pretty special and someone needed to save it. So sometime later my brother calls me and says “Do you remember that W-31 we saw in Moultrie? It is in New York, and it is on KZbin.” I have thoroughly enjoyed watching it get fixed. I also appreciate the way you guys are doing it. Nice, accurate, and original as possible. But not over restored. I look forward to seeing more progress. What was the original color of the W42 hood stripes?

WOW!!! It's so great to hear from you again. We absolutely love your recount of 'ole Mr. Jones. Very cool that you guys came across our channel the way you did. (Would love to connect with you directly sometime). Thank you so much for that generous and humbling compliment. This is one we don't take lightly. With you guys having seen this car is person, you can personally attest to the true the extent of this project. We still have a long way to go, so any continued support will be much needed. Please spread the word about this project in any way you can. We would love for you and your brother to see the car in person again sometime . Regarding the color of the hood stripes RPO W42, we feel that they were originally red. We say this for a couple of reasons: 1- The factory did not spray any primer over the base color prior to spraying the on the actual stripes, thus painting the stripes directly onto the base color. The remains of red are directly over the original Saffron, and also evident behind the chrome hood vents. 2- The car had been re-painted at some point and things like the original emblems, even the "w-31" stickers were taped off. It is obvious that the black stripes are painted over the red stripes as the two sets of tape lines don't directly match one another. This leaves the question...... were the stripes changed to black at the time of the repaint or did that happen much earlier in life and maybe done when new? Thanks again for watching and for playing along. Happy New Year to you and your family -steve / joe

What I do is take the needle gun (for weld scale) and go over my metal to find any soft spots or pots from rust. Then I wipe with phosphoric acid until I’m ready to sandblast. It highlights the rust with black so I concentrate on those areas when I blast. Cuts blast time down and I can do my metal repairs. Wish I could show you a picture
@theautorefinery
@theautorefinery 4 күн бұрын
Ok, very good tip. Often what I did was simply plug away at it with a pointed body hammer. (after sand blasting) That'll show you the weak spots for sure. If those two methods aren't effective enough, the 'ole welder certainly helps locate the thin metal. Your way sounds much more civilized . send us an email of your work. the address is in the channel description. Hope to hear from you again, -steve

Wow your Cutlass has FE2 rear suspension, not many W31 cars for that option. (Mine has it also)
@theautorefinery
@theautorefinery 17 күн бұрын
Yes yes!! An original and proper FE2 suspension. Now that you've brought this up, we can initiate a dialogue.... I've heard of some '68 Ram Rods that were not originally equipped with FE2, but was of the opinion that by '69/'70 they all had it. What was your observation from MCACN at the W-31 invitational? Maybe this is something we should research more? -steve
@ryanweaver5867
@ryanweaver5867 16 күн бұрын
@ it was an RPO separate from W31 so only the people that knew about it, or cared to go through the option list item by item would have ordered it. FE2 is on my dealer invoice and GM of Canada documentation separate of W31

Just a suggestion, you might want to wait to tighten the front and rear control arm bolts until the car is all back together and the full weight is on the springs. Looking good! Any thoughts about repainting the body since everything else has been redone?
@theautorefinery
@theautorefinery 17 күн бұрын
Hi and good evening to you! Yes of course, nothing will be finally torqued until it's all built and heavy. Things are just hand tightened with a ratchet for now. Thanks so much watching. There's been no significant thought of ever repainting the body. Plenty more and so much to do instead of thinking about that. stay tuned -steve

Is the trans crossmember silver on a 1972 cutlass supreme convertible as well? Mine is currently black.
@theautorefinery
@theautorefinery 17 күн бұрын
Good morning and we appreciate you taking the time to watch. To the best of my knowledge, the transmission crossmembers in these cars were not painted but left a natural steel. I only resorted to painting this one a matching color due to the necessary repairs. Now a tubular crossmember, like ones used in a chevelle, those were black. Thank you for you question. Feel free to email directly (address is in the description) if you have any more specific questions. Thanks again and Happy New Year. -steve
