I made a stupid joke about art/sketchbook bros who show off how much they study/draw, humble brag saying how much they suck yet show off intentionally seeking compliments, and how they circle jerk each other within communities.
If you want to dub it into another language or do your own take, lemme know!

When I was a teenager, I tried to join a few online art communities so that I could focus on study and improvement. I felt like wherever I went, I was constantly surrounded by people like this. Some of them even bullied me and told me I should quit art and find a hobby I'm actually good at while I'm still young. It felt like I was in a completely different universe than they were. They all cared about clout, followers, internet exposure, connecting with artists with bigger platforms to increase the size of their own. Basically a lot of 'who has the biggest art 🍆?' It took a long time before I was willing to tiptoe into these communities again and I am so happy to have found people who care more about having fun than about who is the best. I've found myself hanging around a lot of less experienced artists as well, making sure nobody dissuades them from drawing or ever makes them feel like their work isnt good enough. I'm just here to have fun. :)

@@kit4616 My excuse when people would ask me to draw them was "I can't draw people" at first. Then, when they'd start getting bolder and saying that's okay, I would straight up just tell them "no way that I could possibly draw you would be satisfying for you. When I've done this before, people always find a reason to get insulted, so I stopped doing it." Then I hit adulthood and this kind of nagging mostly stopped. Now, it's mostly dealing with idiots that don't realize the time and effort that goes into creating handmade stuff, as others have pointed out. Not to mention the competition for jobs and what is expected of you if you're applying for them (online portfolio, preferably your own paid site, resume, specific experience you only get from working in the industry, etc.) It's an absolute sh*tshow.

Taking a picture of the sketch page is so relatable. In the early years of my art journey I often did quick, simple figures that I was happy with and took a picture, so that I could look back at it when away from my sketch book. They weren’t complicated sketches at all but as a beginner I was really proud of them. It taught me that no matter how experienced of an artist you are, you can and should always appreciate what you make.

Not an artist, but its very refreshing to see this behavior called out. Ive seen this behavior numerous times with artists and its just suffocating being around them. Its one thing to seek validation from peers or be self-conscientious about your work. However if its to the point where it starts encroaching on the creative freedoms of others, its a problem. For a field that I view as the inspiration for all those who lack creativity and a challenge to those who would rather rest on their laurels, being free to create as you will, and express as you will is paramount. Its not a contest; its an act to connect to others that transcend beyond words and that should never be trampled on as a means to boost ones own ego.

Praising it just because you think it’s ‘bad’ isn’t a virtuous act. If you really want to help beginner artists, you need to provide positive, constructive, and then more positive feedback. It’s the rule for feedback in art classes, you find something they did well, something they could improve on, and another thing they did well. Saying “oh wow I love this” doesn’t help anyone improve and is false praise since you think the art you’re seeing is ‘bad.’

I think yours looks real cool. I don't think we would ever think we're good unless we change our attitude towards it, since if I was as good as this video's animator, then I would just find somebody better to say I'm not good enough. Maybe even myself versus an entire animation studio. Perfection is impossible. My sister is an amazing artist but she still does this and feels unhappy with her art sometimes.

At least you have self-awareness. That's the first step, and one that many never experience. I'm sure you've grown since then, if you've already acknowledged how you acted and come to regret doing it! That's all we humans can do: change. Great job on trying to become a better human! 😊

It’s really important to call people out for this type of behavior, rather than just silently hate them. Many people, despite the best intentions, just don’t have the social awareness to recognize that they’re being rude.

This was 100% those 2 guys in high school. The one that has copious amounts of anime character "sketches" and the other who has a sketchbook full of DC and Marvel characters. While I was lagitametly just drawing anything that my brain thought up. If you're ever approached by guys who are like this, don't worry. Half the time they're as orginal and creative as a 4chaner. You can be better without being perfect.

Person tries to be social and is randomly dragged for it. Honestly, situations like this can be solved just by actually thinking about other people’s perspective. Consider and understand why someone might strike up a conversation, what might lead them to share their work. And then you know, treat them with decency rather than discarding them for social skills that aren’t perfect.

At some point you have to give up and let yourself stereotype them, being nice and open all the time costs energy, especially when your own social skills aren't adequate either

It's not the sharing of work or socializing that is being criticized in this video. It's the clear competitive attitude and overt value judgements being put on each artist's work. Taking up another artist's space to gush and praise each other right after talking down about his work. It is rarely constructive and and it is unpleasant. That behavior is more than just socially awkward, it is rude and even hurtful

While I never went to Uni/College to study art, I did have similar encounters in High School that would lead me to typically hiding or not showing my sketchbook. There was however one experience that really makes me cringe to think back on. During years 7 - 9 I had an art teacher who.. truthfully wasn't great. I don't mean she was a bad artist or teacher, however she just liked to really force her views and perspectives on your art if that makes sense. Before you ask, no, this wasn't me going "The teacher wants me to try drawing with charcoal but I don't want to >:c" or "Teacher wants me to practice portraits and anatomy but I want to draw cars instead", I always enjoyed experimenting with other mediums, subjects and styles even though I preferred traditional art of landscapes, cars and anime-esque characters. No, it was more like; Teacher: "Wow, cool landscape! Now you should try making it look like a hellish wasteland instead of serene natural hills!" I'm not joking, if your art wasn't "wacky" or "unique" in her eyes you would get a lower grade. Years 10 - 11 were much better with our new teacher who didn't tell us what or how to create our art, but rather graded it specifically depending on the medium, style and composition, which felt much better than being made to do an assignment in a medium I have no idea how to create in nor any prior practice in _cough_ clay sculpting _cough cough_

This reminds me of art class where there was a bunch of bros like this hounding people to see their sketches. I had a couple of pages where I just doodled some shit memes and a bunch of literal ass for my own amusement. Needless to say, the day came they asked to see my sketches. 3 full pages of dickbutt, various Pepes, Rage face memes, and ass being drawn in different styles poses and shapes; was just a shock to them. I have to give them credit for actually keeping composure and sticking to artistic critiques as they even complimented my line work and anatomy; but they never really bothered other people about their sketch books after that and just kept to their own.
