I never did that in my opinion is wast of time. If you start nicely in square and measure you will be ok. I did many herringbone layouts. I think it is experience but if it helps for you it is ok. The most important thing is to do it perfectly! There are always different ways to do it.

It could be a waste of time I agree, but it is $1,000 worth of tile. My wife thinks it’s worth it 😆
