Little Kevin, the Octopus Vulgaris in this video, goes through an array of emotions when he comes face to face with a blue-ringed octopus.
The only octopus to be deadly to humans, the blue-ringed octopus is found in and near coastal reefs and tidal pools in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Comprised of fours species, much is still being learned about this magnificent creature.
Like many of the videos on our channel, this one was inspired by your comments. We can't wait to hear more of your unique ideas!

This was so cool watching him do different things. I wish the creators would put some little blurbs in to help us understand some of the behaviors we’re seeing out of him. I wish I was an expert in octopus behavior. I really wonder what he’s doing when he curls up or walks around.

I would, too! In some of their videos, they put little bits of information. Not sure why they don't in all of them.

I always like to see how "our" octo will imitate the focus object. In this case, it's the "rings," around 1:30 and again near 2:30. Then he "walks the walk" around 3:00. I wonder if these intelligent creatures actually look forward to their time in the experiment tank. Ah, the stimulation. I like to think so, anyway.

First he hides and then it looks to me he tries to "blend" in into his surroundings. Towards the end I think he's worked out that it's not real and sort acts rather brave! Great video!

Amazing when he curled up his arms to look like rings!
@ParxifalLDM
@ParxifalLDM 3 жыл бұрын
I dont think he curled for imitation. I see that like a suspicious approach to something he cannot decifer. He doesnt understand why he cannot smell him so he doesnt know what he is thinking. plus he doesnt react to his movement, and keep doing a looped pattern. a strange behaviour in nature indeed, like "why dont u see me??" so he kept a cautious position, with the dominant eye in focus on the subject but the arms ready for anything that could happen. when they wrap or round up arms is because they want to reduce the occupied space and if needed use them like a "whip" ready to strike or to eject faster to run away

curled arms in octopi are apparently a sign of deep thought? not super sure
@ParxifalLDM
@ParxifalLDM 3 жыл бұрын
@@elliot_rat not deep thought but carefullness in situations not totally clear. they are rolled ready to snap or ready to protect the body. They are not extended in "reaching" It's like a boxer, they are closed to the body waiting for the opportunity. You definitely are not going around with you arrms extended while you are scared or insecure, psicologically you tend to close

In RGB screens there is more of green pixels, because this is how human eye works (something along these lines). You should consider Octopus point of view projecting them movies. Maybe he doesn't see anything at all?

is there any possible way to invent a type of sign language that octopi can communicate with? like maybe teach the octopus that the curling gesture he makes can be a greeting between him and the humans? i think itd be a pretty cool thing if we managed that ^ ^

Interesting. But could I suggest not having the words so bright at the top? It made it very difficult to focus on the octopus, and also washed out the color of the tank, like an overexposed picture.

2 blue ringed octupus, or the same one twice seen, around the marina in Whyalla. 1 today 15/2/21 and the day before as well. I didn't know we had them this far south. I always thought they preferred warmer areas. But then again we also have giant cuttlefish.

My 3 main things i felt like i noticed; Initially he seemed afraid i think when he curled up seeing it the first time on the right-side of the TV Then on the left side when curling up his color changed, and i felt like maybe he was trying to copy the blue ringed octopus (or blend into the colors on the TV) but couldn't quite manage it. And finally, around 3:10 he tries floating infront of the octopus to mimic its posture. I could be wrong but this is how i felt what his actions were. Interesting

The blue ringed octopus is so deadly, can stop someone heart so quickly with their neurotoxin. I feel these common octopus have likely never seen a blue ring or they would stay the hell away when it was displaying its rings (a sign of feeling threatened). Also the blue ring has a body size of only about 10-15cm so not proportional. I think the octopus worked it out

Though these videos are interesting, learning experiences, it is not unlike the movie Vivarium where aliens held humans in unnatural conditions (void of sunlight, essential nutrients, etc.,) for observation. Are these octopuses returned to the wild?

These videos would be a lot more worthwhile if you dispense with most of the editing and music. People don't need or want that stuff as much as content creators often think they do. At least an unedited version to go with it would be appreciated.

If you have any cuttlefish there at the moment, it would be intriguing to see if the response is different. I'm saying this because I believe that they're the better colour changers (? I have seen one change into checkerboard pattern and even more complex ones). I wonder if one would try to mimic the blue rings?
@scootermom1791

That was exactly what I thought, too. It would be really cool to see a cuttlefish's reaction to this.

dominant eye on the focus, arms rounded up to be ready for anything that could happen. i see this like he doesnt understand what he is doing and why doesnt change pattern or movement. He is suspicious because in nature strange behavious translate in suspicious approach, of course. like you see someone out of the window that you dont recognize and grab a stick, he could be ok, but you know, better be ready for anything.
