Crazy to think that at that time Worthy was the one they send the double-team to. A testament to how great that team was that Kareem and Magic are possibly your 2nd and 3rd options on offense...

Kareem was almost 40 by this time and Magic was the primary playmaker, but probably tied with Worthy and Scott as offensive options go. All three averaged above 20pts a game in late 80s.

Worthy commanded double teams because of his quickness and swoops out of the post. He could really embarrass defenders especially if they were smaller or slower. Pat Riley said a track coach came to help the team with footwork and he was blown away by Worthy’s efficiency and soeed. I recall even late in his career, he’d lost a step, but they’d still double him because he’d just rely on that turnaround J. He is described as a third wheel but I think from 86 to 91 he was their biggest threat to score and usually led the team in playoff scoring. Magic was still the franchise, but the strategy on him was a bit different - not so much a double but whether to give him the outside shot or not.

Anyone that doesn't think they played defense in the 80's is sadly mistaken. NOTHING breaks a defense down like a fast break, and Showtime was the best ever at it. And their half court two man game with Magic and Kareem was lethal. This '86 team was good, but not their best one. I think they peaked too early that year. The Celts in '86 were a bitch. Don't think they played defense back then? Watch one of THEIR games.
