Because they actually bother to research it rather than repeat muck-raking headlines from the German media 60 years ago. Check up on the accident rates for other operators, or even the yearly distribution of accidents for the Luftwaffe - it was far from perfect, but it absolutely does not deserve its reputation and said reputation is not even based in fact. All jets of that era had high accident rates by modern standards, and numerous air forces went straight from subsonic jets to the 104. It's not suprising there were some skill issues for the first few years.

That was a rare and mostly unknown incident of friendly fire, and I thank you indeed. As far as i know from people serving at that time, the confusion was created by an old Greek LST, maybe intentionaly by its Captain Handrinos, bombarding (with its Bofors 40mm) a turkish cypriot outpost near Paphos. The turkishcypriot defenders trying to convince the Turkish Airforce to help them ASAP, reported attack by the Greek fleet of several warships. It has been recorded by the Greek radios, that after the initial attack, which mortally wounded the Kocatepe and 4 planes, the turkish seamen recognized their own planes, and started calling them on the radio. The Turkish pilots were so convinced they were Greeks trying to fool them, did not believe them, adding to the confusion when they gave the previous day's codes, which provoked the captain of «Kocatepe» (D354) Giuven Erkayia, to curse at them. The pilots started laughing that the Greeks were such good liars, they knew how to curse in turkish very well. Anyway, the incident, like the whole war was a tragic mistake that was paid in unecessary blood and tears by both sides !

Thank you very much for contributing additional info. Perhaps the lesson here is that you shouldn't be fooled by prejudice. It seems that Turkish pilots thought Greeks to be so sneaky that they were able to learn to speak perfect Turkish. When you think about it rationally, that's very unlikely.

24 F4 was operational with Greek air force and no one in Turkish air force in July of ’74. But never military leaders send them to Cyprus. The only official Greek army force in Cyprus was ELDYK (around 1200 men) and a battalion of paratroopers plus some officers of Cypriot National Guard. So the ’74 Cyprus incident is not technically a Greek-Turkish “war”… The “fake” radio broadcast is not accurate. A tank carrier of Greek Navy named “LESVOS” was the previous day at Pafos. It’ was carrying replacement soldiers for ELDYK. After war erapted at Pafos, Greek Cypriots asked for help to defeat Turk Cypriot garrison of the town. ELDYK soldiers on the ship used the antiaircraft bofors of “LESVOS” to help Greek Cypriots. Probably from bombardment confusion and fear Turkish garrison leader had the false impression that there is a Greek fleet somewhere near Pafos. “LESVOS” after that incident followed a route to Egypt instead the expected to Crete. So the only ships in area next day was the Turkish and the story more or less is as you mention.-

Then in July 1974, a pro-junta coup broke out in Cyprus & a self-styled Sampson-Samson took power. & then Turkey under the leftist Bulent Ecevit obligingly invaded as if he's playing D-Day. The junta regime collapsed, but the Greeks were enraged at the Turkish invasion. & Nelson Rockefeller picked up as veep by President Ford said brightly : ''If I were a Greek, I would thank the Turks !''

Actually the incident was the outcome of Turkish navy saying the have no ships on that area. Unknown to the navy 3 ships stationed at I think Italy was on their way back to Turkey on radio silence. Also one of the destroyers saved a downed pilot the day before and during the attacks. The pilot that has been resqued get to the radio and talked to the attacking pilots saying what squadron he is from , the names of some pilots etc then the attacking wing understood that it's their own ships and called of the attack but it was too late. It was not the airforces mistake. It was the navies. The following day no pilot wanted to go on any sorties. One of the top brass General talks to the pilots showing documents that the navy said there is no Turkish ships in the area, they are Greek ships. Told them they have done their jobs perfectly and it's the navy generals who had blood on their hands not the pilots.

I have to agree regarding Growling Sidewinder. Maybe we have to draw a line here when it comes to DCS Dog Fight creators and DCS history content creators GS is good with all the detailed analysis at the end of each dog fight, but I can't watch it too much cause it gets some who or the other boring cause it follows the same schematic representation all over again I like to have some kind of diversity, the same kind which I find watching a Showtime112 History content. Now, before some people misunderstand, I want to clarify! I am not saying GS is not good, he is if you are in just for Dog Fights, but I am more in for diversity which finally Showtime112 can provide with his Historical Content at the same time one can also learn to form those events in History. Just my thoughts.

@@LockOnNow I would say that GS' 1vs1 duels are something like ancient gladiator fights in an arena. They are designed primarily to be crowd pleasers. Also to represent actual fighting but with most factors simply dropped out. You have two fighters in a confined, isolated space and they fight until one is defeated (often dead). Real ancient combat was more about formations, tactics, terrain etc. In real, historic air combat there are also many more factors. Participants often chose not to fight but to dissengage (which gladiators couldn't do and GS and his sparring partners never do, regardless of their situation). But then again, this formula seems to be more popular, even if less diverse 😁😁

I think with GS he is just limited by his format. He started with these neat 1v1 guns/heaters only videos which are fun and all, but when you focus exclusively on that you end up running out of DCS modules very fast. From there, you either go into more complex BVR or many v many situations, or you experiment with these low fidelity mods that pop up all the time, like he did. Personally it's not the choice I would have made, but it's his channel and it's working well for him, so that's great for the DCS community as a whole.

USA had imposed arms embargo to Cyprus because it has always been sympathetic to Soveit Union. For example Cyprus never received SA-2 soviet missiles that destroyed many American fighters in Vietnam war. The turkish invasion plan was a disaster. Most of the Turkish paratroopers didnt survive. It is true that a few transport aircrafts with commandos were sent without notice to Cyprus and got friendly fire just because the Greek Junda didnt want to look ugly.. Yes indeed, friendly fire is always a bad thing when it happens, it also happened in Vietnam. Guess it happens sadly-wise in every war. It’s estimated that there may be as many as 8,000 friendly fire incidents in the Vietnam War caused by mistakes, negligence, exhaustion, panic, horseplay, dim lighting, dense vegetation, inattentiveness, faulty equipment, poor training, foolishness, ill fortune or some combination of the above. There doesn’t appear to be any agreement of a firm percentage attributed to FF during the war, I’ve seen estimates ranging from 2.4% - 39% of all combined casualties. How were individuals categorized? The military refers to Friendly Fire as “misadventure” - correct me if I’m wrong, but I think this is the worst use of words, ever.

When I researched for this topic, I was happy to find that both F-104 and F-86 had Turkish skins available. But happiness went away when I realized they both had the old style, square roundels and that was replaced in 1972 😁 It seems that they were easily confused with the Soviet red star. This however required the use of my rather limited skinning skills. Regarding friendly fire incidents, I developed a strong interest in them. Not sure why, maybe because of those 'how is it possible' kind of comments which I find rather annoying. 😁 Thanks again for your elaborate comments!

@@showtime112 About you mention that problem with the Russian Star before. The TuAF used "square" insignia until 1972. It was a red square outlined in white. Then, it was replaced with "red-white-red roundel" which is currently in use. The change is due to the fact that at high aircraft speeds, it is possible to confuse the red square with the Soviet Air Force's red star marking. The national flag is painted on the fin, which is reduced in size since the 1970s. That also leaves a big question mark why the TuAF placed their national flag on the right side of the rudder fin mirrored, which is wrong, but you see even the official TuAF makes that mistake.

Those ships were Turkish ships returning from England for maintenance. and Turkish pilots did not have any information about the ships. Turkey had intelligence that Greece was preparing a convoy to aid the Coup. It was one of the biggest fears as the amphibious operation capacity of Turkey was extremely limited and Cypriot defenders were causing headaches from their well-entrenched position on mountains overlooking landing beaches. If the Greeks could reinforce the island, the invasion would most likely fail so the force was constantly looking for such a convoy. Meanwhile, the Turkish Navy was also tasked with blocking such reinforcements coming from Greece so were ordered to sail west of the island. The Turkish Command structure of that time was divided within different branches, the Airforce and Navy were commanded from separate locations. Ships could identify attacking planes as Turkish both from their insignias and it was obvious that Greek planes wouldn't be able to make this far in the eastern Mediterranean and go back due to the range limitations of that era's planes. However, this information was not possible to share with the Air Force command in time to stop the attack as the Air Force was on the target that they had been desperately looking for. The result was horrible.

A couple more points. While capable of some upper deck damage I am not convinced Zuni rockets would do the degree of damage or impact as shown here. Also, and this may be due to the software programming there is no way warships or indeed any ship under attack is going to continue placidly on the same course and speed. Footage of Midway and Lingayen Gulf etc shows that. And with tongue firmly in cheek, Turkish aircraft attacking and sinking an Australian destroyer would not be a smart move especially then when we still had a carrier. Finally, a tragic blue-on-blue with a ship and 54 men lost. I have to ask, though, while Turkey invaded Cyprus (casus belli?) would an attack on approaching Greek warships been legitimate. There was no offcial declaration as I remember.
@showtime1122 жыл бұрын
In reality, bombs were used for attacks. However, F-104 is a mod only and it doesn't work perfectly. Releasing bombs caused damage to the airplane so I selected rockets instead. Being 100% in these reenactments is literally impossible.
