I love how all throughout the song it’s peaceful and keeps the same tone. Even when the visuals get scary and cultish.
@Cure_Hana Жыл бұрын
The music itself even has a bit of a 70’s feel, which is the decade when most cults were thriving without much public knowledge. And this might just be a coincidence, but song especially sounds like it’s in the style of the Beatles, whose song “Helter Skelter” partially inspired cult leader Charles Manson to organize a series of murders.

One thing I always found interesting about the episode is how The Story of Michael doesn’t actually prove that he found a special one. It only says that he was ugly and ostracized for being ugly.
@pokemonmanic3595 Жыл бұрын
Well I see it as appealing to people who think themselves as ugly and unloved, as one of them says “Everyone has a special one…even Michael!” Like trying to assure that yeah even if you’re the ugliest person in town, join us and you’ll get a special one too.

Same - I like how they sort of sell their love cult as this thing that will shield people from the crueller parts of life, despite not having any evidence to show it does.

I kinda think that Shrignold and Warren have a similar trait (other than the fact that they’re both bugs lol), they both get a personal gain out of a relationship. For warren it’s friendship, and for Shrignold, it’s just love in general. However, I usually think that Warren isn’t fully aware that his idea of friendship is toxic, he just likes the idea of people liking and listening to him. Shrignold I believe is aware that what he’s teaching isn’t true but he gets control.

I think it's the opposite. Warren is a textbook narcissist. He thinks very highly of himself, lies about himself to appear superior to others, loves nothing more than to hear others shower him with praise and validation, and REFUSES to listen to others, always insisting he's right and you're just mistaken. Meanwhile, Shrignold seems genuinely brainwashed by the cult. He earnestly thinks this is what love is.

As someone with a lot of religious trauma and trauma surrounding love and relationships, episode 3 was the most terrifying for me because it felt so real. Sure, the others are scary, the gore is gross and scary, but they’re not as realistic and hard hitting as this one. To me, Shrignold is the scariest teacher. Tony is a close second.

Personally I think this ‘teacher’ is a lot more like the Twins who show up out of nowhere from somewhere outside the house. They both try to trick whoever they are trying to ‘teach’ in order to get a new member of their family/group to do what they want. They are outsiders that don’t just show up inside the trio’s home like the other teachers, who have something to gain personally from using manipulation as a tactic.

To me, 'Love' is less about cults and more a critique on religion and how it uses love and happiness to control people. Shrignold is the preacher, the one in charge of the church but not the top authority; that's Malcom, who Shrignold also serves. He teaches new converts how everything works and makes sure everybody serves the king, or god in this analogy. Everybody serves their king/god by doing things for him and spreading his word, promising everybody eternal love, happiness, and a community that cares and understands you; but all of those things are inherently tied to all the rules and limitations. If you want all the good stuff you gotta just change your name, adopt a whole new way of thinking, and serve a nebulous deity for your whole life and _maybe_ your life will improve emotionally. Shrignold's way of finding new converts is similar to religions like Mormonism, they target lonely people with bad lives and tell them "hey if you join us, your life will be hunky dorie!"; or in most cases, finding people _they_ think are lonely and have bad lives and convincing them they do. Yellow Guy was never lonely, he just left because he upset that Duck killed a butterfly; but in comes Shrignold telling him how there's so much hate in the world and that Yellow Guy would be way happier if he joined his little group. His concept of a 'special one' is also something you see in a lot of Americanized religions, that one person who you're destined to be with and marry, the one you'll be with forever because its your duty; even if you know nothing about them. One thing you left out that's a not-so-subtle piece of evidence that 'Love' is about religion is the line "He's made for her, she's made for him. That's the way its always been, its perfect, and it pure, and its protected with a ring.", this religious movement is homophobic; just like a lot of traditional religions. Shrignold and his followers are vague about every other part of the 'love' they promise, but when it comes to who Yellow Guy is supposed to be with they're *very* specific about it. Warren and Shrignold are two different sides of the same coin; they're both horrible, abusive people (or bugs) who want control over others. Warren seeks to isolate whatever poor sod he's latched onto and make them his plaything, not even really hiding the fact he doesn't care about what they want. Shrignold wants as many people as he can get to listen to him, he wants them to be a part of this big happy family who just so happen to also serve the god he believes in; and I think that in his own twisted way Shrignold _does_ care about his commune. Also this is kind of unrelated, but I think if these two met that they'd either be perfectly matched given how pathetically desperate Warren is for affection and how eager Shrignold is to make others 'happy', or their mental illnesses would sync up and they'd just start fighting each other.

They’d be something alright. Either Warren would go with the cult stuff all the way or “Ok Stop” the whole thing as soon as they get to Michael or the special one lesson. Or they become a power couple (platonic) within the cult. Warren goes out and makes “Friends”, brings them to cloudlandia, and Shrignold does the rest.

Shrignold has always been my favorite, but I’ll be honest: I don’t see him as activity malicious, more as incredibly indoctrinated with a savior complex. The way he acts, to me, always felt less like “I’m actively trying to put you down” and more “I’m trying to be kind but am also being a bit hurtful oops tehe” Maybe it’s just my bias, hope he appears in the next season of the show.

@@RoninCatholic 1. Islam isn't fake. 2. Christianity is just as screwed up when it comes to this. 3. A lot of cults dissuade love between members as a whole, straight, LGBT, or otherwise. My least favorite episode of the original KZbin run. Strange to hear my choice of least favorite is actually popular, I felt like I was the only one since lots of anti-Christian people jumped all over it as YES, THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT YOU LOOK LIKE ALL THE TIME YOU SILLY CHRISTIANS. In fact I was under the general impression that it and the final episode were tied as fan favorites, with my preferences for 4, 2, and 5 being outliers.
