The number one and the most important thing people need is to be in shape for the outdoors

@judgedredd3686 Not only is being in shape important. But the number 1 prepping item everyone needs is common sense. If you live in a fire region and have to evacuate only grab the gear in this video, well it's not really going to help you out. Different situations will call for different gear. BO situations in winter time going need different gear than you'll need in summer. But if you've got to BO in the summer, and that lasts through the winter time and all you grab is summer stuff then your F'd when winter hits.

Knowledge goes a long way and really I could do with just a knife and nothing else. Everything needed can be made on the go. Dont invest your money in gear or the latest and greatest "survival" tools. Invest your money and time on knowledge. It weighs nothing and you can take it with you everywhere. To the person that says swap out the woobie for mountain house meals what do you plan to do after you eat them and they are gone? You will still need more food. The woobie provides more use for a longer time. Especially when shelter is more important than food. Swapping out gear for food will prove a costly mistake. But if you have to go with some gear your main items should be all quality and time tested items that you know how to use. If you have never used something dont take it. Multi-Tool for me that's ( leatherman wave ), fixed blade knife ( esee 4 ), ferro rod ( quality home made with antler handle ) flashlight ( fenix ), 4 extra batteries, gorilla tape, paracord 25ft, water filter best filters are inline filters ( aquamira frontier pro or Sawyer mini ), S.O.L emergency blanket or a wool military blanket if you have the space and can carry the weight and a stainless steel canteen. If you cant get by on those items you are probably screwed no matter what gear you have. Also carrying water is not necessary unless you are in a very hot climate or desert area. Anything over 710ml in your pack in my opinion is just added weight that can be obtained along the way normally. Especially here in Canada water is everywhere.

Starting fire with 2 sticks may be a pain but it's really not hard. Some nice feathering and force will get the job done, but you're correct fire is a huge survival tool

No gut hook blade for processing small game either. Also you don't need the weight and bulk of a rifle. A .22 Cal. Pistol will do the job just fine and you can carry it concealed or on your hip for self defense which will be necessary in the SHTF scenario!

Depends on location, in some places (like where I live and have my bug out location with a stream just large enough for water but not fishing) it'd be easier to trap small game, in which case a snare set is a much better and more useful to have than a fishing kit.

I live in the Pacific Northwest, I would add a fire starting kit, small fishing kit and a sheet of clear plastic in order to make a super shelter. I think a 15 item kit would be more realistic. That said, great choices

Not a bad list but I would have to wonder about your water supply. While boiling will kill off bacteria it will not remove heavy metals. If your not going to carry some sort of filter, then set up a way to distill your water instead of just boiling. You already have what you need to do this in your list. The space blanket hung over your water cup to capture steam then drip into another container will get the heavy metals out as well as kill off any bacteria.

I kinda had the same thought My home town right now has an issue with city water and boiling it makes whatever in it more concentrated due to steaming out the good water, good point about the blanket

I do not disagree with your choices at all. I would even go so far as to keep the magazines topped off already. In my Ruger Breakdown Bag, I keep two 25 round magazines along with the standard ten round mag. They are always topped off. I keep four of the 100 round boxes of CCI like yours. I also keep a Ruger 45/22 with a red dot scope and two mags topped off in a kydex holster designed for it as a scoped pistol. The pistol goes on my belt as soon as possible, which means immediately here in Texas . That is the beauty about living in Texas, open carry lol. It all packs down great, and I would consider all of that as a system. What I never understood about some of the tags is why there is a limitation to ten items. As you said, a small medical kit and maybe about five pounds of food, preferably freeze dried because of the weight to calorie ratio. Thanks for sharing.

I agree, my bug out kit thoughts come from nearly 30 yrs mil time and multiple deployments. My bag is a rucksack packed for long term deployment, from shelter to taking game. While heavier I know I can carry and patrol AFGHANISTAN while carrying it. This inc a heck of a lot of water in a dry high altitude while wearing LBV, FRAG vest, and plates.

Definitely environment specific and ten items is never enough. Skills and training are mandatory. I live in the northeast. My ‘lightweight’ (30lbs) get-home bag in my car is always there, always ready and has at least 20 items that I consider minimum loadout: Sawyer water filtration bottle and a second Sawyer mini filter, fire kit, loaded 9mm sidearm in ankle holster w 100 extra rounds (carry at the ready in coat pocket, if in danger - good concealment, if not, or trying to pass through a checkpoint), high calorie food (bars, oatmeal packs, MREs), stainless pot for cooking/boiling, 6” ESEE survival knife (has fire steel onboard), quality camo poncho, 8” folding saw, winter hat, tactical leather gloves, compass, Leatherman Wave, OD/black pattern shemagh and a camo bandana (tons of uses.) Also a Rite-In-Rain notepad & pen w duct tape roll around it, topo map of the area, two LED headlamps w extra batteries (w red mode for night/stealth) folding titanium cook stove (type you can use any twigs, etc. for fuel with), 180’ spool of tarred #36 bank line, and of course the med kit (IFAK) has trauma stuff: CAT tourniquet, quick-clot, neosporin, various bandages, Israeli combat pressure bandage, suture kit, latex gloves, shears, sterile tweezers, hemostats, nf airway, chest seal, pain meds, iodine, sterile wipes.) Small tin with survival fishing kit includes about 100’ of 15# mono, ~50’ of 20# superbraid, a dozen hooks of various sizes, several small sinkers, a couple mini bobbers. I can dig up worms, fashion a pole and pull endless panfish out of hundreds of ponds in my state with that gear all day long. I can grab that bag and run and I know I’m good for several weeks, minimum. Indefinitely if I get home or to other caches. I also have a box in my trunk with extra warm clothing, boots, a 10x10 camo tarp, a Ziploc bag full of extra fire kindling (fatwood and Vaseline/sawdust tinder balls), my hatchet, more ammo, a solar/USB-rechargeable flashlight, a small, solar, rechargeable AM/FM/shortwave radio, A handheld, rechargeable HAM radio, a BioLite stove I can fit in the pack that has a thermal USB charger on it I can charge my phone and lights with (nifty - charges your devices while you cook) a couple space blankets, several heavy (3 mil) 50-gallon trasbags (improvised raincoat, waterproof container, stuff with leaves for a quick insulation layer between you and the ground… emergency cache, etc) - and more food. Depending on what’s going on, I could grab any or all of that stuff and bring it along. The pack is just big enough and I can lash stuff on the outside of it. That gear is always in my car and I’m never far from my car. If I hike a long distance from the car, much of that stuff in the bag comes with me. Assuming I make it home, we are well fortified. We all have larger, more complete versions of that bag ready to go, defensive gear and other bags with the same gear at different locations. We know how to get to safety in multiple directions without using roads at any time of year, we know how to defend ourselves, how to survive, grow food, hunt and process game and we have basic medical skills. I consider this the minimum capability I should have as a husband and father, for the protection of my family. I don’t go through life talking peoples’ ears off about prepping, I don’t open carry, I try not to compromise our opsec by over sharing with the neighbors or coworkers… and I know there are a thousand scenarios I’m not prepared enough for and that it could all fail, but I take comfort in the fact that we have the skills and planning to give us a good chance. A good group of trained people to team up with is worth a million years worth of saved up food. Make some friends with medical skills, engineering skills, defenseive skills hunting and farming skills… make sure they all know how to get to the same safe places if it ever comes to that. Have a plan and comms. “Trust in God, but lock your doors at night.” 😉👍🏼

The Prepared Wanderer I keep hearing about WTSHF. Back in the 1980's I was homeless. The SHTF. I tried to blend in. I didn't carry a bag or a pack. I wasn't trained for homelessness. I was hospitalized several time for exhaustion and dehydration and malnutrition. It might happen again and I wont be prepared.

I would get a thermal blanket also so you can reflect your body back on you. And I did not see any thing for water filtration like a life straw. You might not always be able to boil water. And how about starting a fire you should have at least 3 ways. Also I would have a side arm no matter what. Also you leatherman blade is not that strong so another pocket knife would be great. And whst about extra batteries? But you have to look ahead and expect the unexpected. Good video. these suggestions are just my opinion.

This is a good well reasoned list. Some of the gear has me thinking. In the basic kit, I would have included a way to make fire, particularly if that was the only way to purify water. I must admit, fire announces one's presence widely so I think I would have looked to water purification too.

YES!!... Finally someone has mentioned the poncho/poncho liner/mylar sheet combo as essential gear!! Year round whether daypacking, base camping or even in my car/get home kit... I keep that very close at hand. Would also recommend a lighter (or 3) whistle, some duct tape, a small emergency fishing kit, a compass and road map. As for food... pack some protein bars and some jerky... It buys you time for you and doesn't make foraging an immediate need.

Good selection of items. In reality it's difficult to make a list like this because we all live in different places under different circumstances. The items I take could differ from yours because of our different weather, tree cover, availability of food and water, population density, medical needs, etc. The way I figure it, as long as I address the primary issues of food, water, shelter (warmth), and security I will have a pretty decent chance of surviving.

SHTF from home? Do you live in an apt in the City? Do you live in the country? Have you already scouted your escape route? And alternate escape route? Escape by foot? By vehicle? EMP... do you have a non-electronics vehicle? Single person? Couple? Family? "10-items" - The only thing good about "List your 10 items" is it makes people think, and thats always good! Good list Wendell. Also, If you're escaping in your Truck? My truck is mostly packed, including .22. From my scout days... "Always be prepared!" Cheers. PS: Wendell, do you have a single bag to carry your 1022, app and mags? If not, that would be a great piece of gear to recommend. I have a bag (custom made) for my AR. It includes: AR, AR-tool kit, Multiple loaded mags, Clip on ammo bag.

Nice gear!..Having suffered from Giardiasis in the early 90's on a backcountry trip..i can personally tell you that you should consider several options for water purification and a spare dromedary bag...it would make having to boil water safe to drink not such a chore..a life straw is $20..and will keep you moving if your situation dictates such..also.. potassium permanganate weighs ounces yet it is an antiseptic for blisters,.oxidizes heavy particles for water purification,..and with glycerin..creates a hell of a fire..a fresnel lens or 6x magnifying lens will kill bacteria in water too..I carry some alum..and several coffee filters..due to my experience with parasitic water.. as an avid backpacker/Bushcrafter I carry gear similar to yours..cuben fiber,.titanium,.etc.. ounces=pounds..pounds=pain..but there is no way of getting around water.. or the lack of it..or it being unsafe to drink...It will shut you down like nobody's business!

I'd group the Ruger and components as one and add a metal match, and you got all the bases covered for not only survival but relative comfort. As far as fire arms. A 22 is good. The ammo is light weight. I would go with a 20 gauge shot gun. A Mossberg 20 gauge youth shotgun is light weight. You can shoot many different types of round, from light bird shot to deer slugs. Plus no one wants to go up against a shot gun. Looking down the barrel . A shot gun barrel looks pretty scary compared to a 22 barrel.

Also extra mags and ammo, along with with a couple flash lights in a bag on my back. Also a small flashlight I Duct taped to my hat incase the clip broke on it LOL. A tarp to put over me to stay dry. 4 cases of water and 2 large bags of can food that can be eaten as is, along with a multitool that had a can opener on it and threw those in the boat and started rowing. As I paddled I got as many people in needing help and took them to higher ground. Did the best I could do. Elderly, children and women in the boat first of course and everybody got a can of food and a bottle of water till it ran out. Horrible tragedy but all you can do is help. Nice video and good stuff to carry to hit the wilderness and survive.

I would update the 3XAAA 5MM headlamp to something with a higher IPX rating running one or two batteries such as a Fenix HL50 or Armytek Tiara. Both are IXP8 running Cree XP-L or XM-L. So easy to find and run 1XAA which has the power of 2.5 1 X AAA. That said I sometimes use a 2XAAA headlamp/1XAAA combo kit but even that would beat the old PT (XM-L vs 5MM) by an vast margin. That said I totally agree with the value of hands free lighting. Guessing there is a ferro rod etc in your truck and I know you EDC right so the lack of these items is of no concern as you will have them. Edit. Forgot to add great video and thumbs up!

Nice vid. I like that you don't talk about going into the woods and homesteading. I served in both the Marines (infantry) and Army (MP) and the marines don't land and build bunkers. The military is successful for many reasons, moving fast is certainly one of them. Yes I know there are a lot of differences (the military certainly does build bases and establish re-supply points) but when comparing scenarios, at the end of the day, movement is key in both. Having done A LOT of reconnaissance and small unit tactics, movement/orientation and not being detected/avoidance are paramount in most scenarios especially when facing superior numbers or firepower. Watch, wait and strike at the TIME OF YOUR CHOOSING. Remember the ooda loop. Time, training, stealth and intelligence (of terrain, your capabilities and your enemy/threat) are your allies.

I love that you chose a 10/22. Perhaps you should look into the zk-22 conversion by aklys defense for the 10/22. You get the full package of an 18” barrel rifle in a 26” overall length gun. Very comfortable , quick to shoot, and very durable.

Most important thing about prepping is to have a plan to dispose of the evidence. Food cans, packaging. Most people smart enough to prep, can give their location away by not anticipating the garbage trucks stopped picking up your trash. So, how do you dispose of all that evidence from the downtrodden, desperate and dangerously desperate? A big give away would be going house to house and looking in the garbage can to see if someone is currently going through food products via the trash.

When it comes down to the basics needed for survival, IMO your items fit the bill. Personally I'm not leaving my property alive, I have been working on setting up a small farm / homestead to raise, process and preserve my own food. I never really subscribed to the whole "bug out" concept, IMO that makes you a refugee. Unlike most people I have livestock rights on my property, so this gives me the ability to raise my own; And quite frankly it's just too much to take with me or walk away from. Never under estimate the abilities of a 10/22, it's not as much about the caliber as it is proper shot placement. Let's not forget the 5.56 used by the military is a .22 caliber round, it just has a lot more powder behind it. The reality of it is the .22 caliber is the most accurate caliber ever produced. And it doesn't get much better than the Ruger 10/22, I have a ridged and a take down with the BX-25X2 mags, the pack holds several mags and a total of 750 rounds all in a small pack, you can't beat that with a stick. Just try to carry 750 rounds of 5.56 or 7.62X39, not gonna happen for long. Another advantage to the .22 caliber is the report isn't going to be heard for half a mile as compared to a 30-30 or 308 so you could actually get to eat your harvest rather that have others come looking for it or you. I agree with multi purpose items as they make for less to carry, light weight items for shelter and comfort items are a big deal. Learning to do more with less is worthwhile, your big knife looks like it would work well for skinning; While it may be a bit bulky it would probably work quite well. This is something you could practice now to use later.

I have a 15-20 piece kit that fits well into a backpack the back pack is prolly about 2 pounds. kit contains a simple a frame tent with mylar blankets and multiple tarps for sheltering. first aid kit multiple fire starters water container s plenty of cordage compas knife hatchet and some odds and ends. No issues with this video other then the water tablets. I always carry those just in case I don't have access to a fire to purify my water but to each their own. I don't count the weapons as part of the kit since I don't carry them in a bag. but I'd be bringing a Remington. 22LR only problem is it's not a breakdown but it is light and my 9mm

I think your selection is what works for you and that is great. I also would go with a 22 but would select a Henry AR-7 mainly because that I can slip into a backpack without it being where everyone could see. I see so many people who select military looking backpacks that might make them a target in a SHTF.

I thought you had some good ideas, but when it comes to water purification, boiling only works if it is an biological microbial offender. For chemical, inorganic contaminants, you would have to distill, which is difficult and needs special equipment. That is why most experienced preppers incorporate the ability to boil and adequate filtration/sterilization methods. Microbes are not the only killers that will be found in water...

I do like your choices, and I agree with all of them. Sound logic, and well researched. Would it be cheating to say 1.) Fire Kit 2.) First Aid Kit 3.) Water Treatment Kit 4.) Shelter Kit 5.) Tool Kit 6.) Armed Response Kit. 7.) Personal Hygiene Kit 8.) Food Kit. WOW! I still have two items left. I tend to think in "kits" so everything is together, and I just have to grab one bag/container. I tend to pack my BOB's this way. LOL. Have some fun.

You can stay warm if you construct a super shelter. All you need to add is a sheet of plastic. I would add a combustion kit for fire starting, a water filter because boiling while on the move is not practical, and enough food for the first 72 hours so you can keep moving towards safety. 15 items would vastly improve your chances of survival in a dangerous situation. My item 15 would be a first aid kit and I would substitute a fishing kit for the firearms. Foraging, fishing, and snares can keep you fed.

I can almost completely agree with your top 10. the only thing I would of changed is that the 22 counts as one as a whole. because you can't shoot anything without ammunition. With that being said, I personally would of added a larger caliber pistol. something like a 380. nothing to serious. just a little extra protection to help step your game up..... if need be.....

When it comes to fire starting I try to think long term, Lighters are great and easy to use but they do break and will run out, ferro rods can be used up or destroyed by use or just being taken care of improperly (corrosion). My other back up is a magnifying glass sooner or later we will have sun and I can have fire or just make a bow fire starter with some cordage.

I like your list the 10/22 would be my choice also. I personally would trade the saw for a survival axe with hammer and would want a survival knife with a few more features since I am limited to 10 items. That is just my personal opinion based on my skill and experience set. I think a lot depends on what equipment you are comfortable with and where you are bugging out to. I think your choice of shelter items was perfect, those are the exact items I would have chosen.
