For people looking for an English translation, just click on the subtitles and try following along with the auto-generated option (it's not perfect, but thanks to his gesturing, you can get the gist of it). Shibasaki-san was initially talking about the different types of cases/palettes. First he talked about smaller ones and how they're convenient for travel. Then he talked about the size of each mixing tray, and how it's important to have enough space to put the paint down in them and how it's better to have high dividers so the paint won't overflow. He also talked about the pros and cons of different cases; like how plastic ones were light (which can be good for travel, but would also get knocked around a lot), metal cases are heavier (so they weigh more, but are more sturdy), and aluminum is a good medium between the two, but they are also easily bent so the case may become misshapen. And rust with metal palettes can also be an issue with long term use. He also talked about the two different kinds of paint pans, like the little square ones (and some of those could be removed and swapped around), but he prefers using tube paints and then moving the paints from those pans directly onto the mixing trays. It's easier to do because of the incline for those kinds of palettes and your paints won't be as muddied because you wouldn't have to keep dipping your brushes in different colors as you mixed them. I don't actually speak Japanese, so it's not 100%, but that's more or less what he's saying. In another video, he was talking about how tube paints can be rehydrated anyways and that it's better to prepare plenty of whatever blend of color you'll be using (so you won't run out and have to remix it), just for a little more context.

I'm surprised how much I understood from just watching you point at everything and show what you are doing! I'm learning Japanese so sometimes I hear some words that I understand but it helps that you explain it well :D Thanks~
Just bought my first palette with my first set. :) Can't wait to try it out! I also followed your advice on starting with a 20 brush. I did gouache in high school, but that's as close as it went and I didn't bother too much with the technique back then. :)

Thanks for teaching us about the different palettes and watercolor pans. I will try to finish the ones I have now, but if I consider buying more in the future, I'll do what's recommended in this video!
Shibasaki-san, I really like your videos, your watercolors, and the way you explain all, I can say that I'm learning a lot with you; Although I would like to have subtitles sometimes (in english, though I'm spanish) to understand better what you say, instead of searching always the translation, because is a bit difficult to follow the rythm of the explanation. In spite of this, stay the same! Kindest regards from Spain :)

Can someone sum up the video for me because I don't understand a thing? Did he mention which watercolor sets are good to use for beginners or something?

He is explaining about different types of palette--metal, aluminum, plastic, et ....He says he does not recommend a set of paint that are in many small containers as you can't get enogh paint on your brush, and, you just ending up digging it with your brush. He also says a metal palette tends to get rusty after many years, and it is heavy to carry when you go outside. He says a plastic pallette tends to move around when you dip your brush to get some paint.

There are just too many watercolor palettes to pick from. It is difficult for a person to find one that fits what is needed. For me it must have enough wells for the paint colors; it must have good separation walls between mixing areas; it must be the correct material, white porcelain/ceramic or white enameled metal, upon which to effectively mix paint (I hate when the paint forms into ‘beads’ on plastic instead of laying out smoothly); it must close securely and wet paint must not leak out; and it must be a manageable size. Although there are some good contenders, I’m still looking for the perfect palette. Sigh.

I think it's Holbein paints, brushes and palette. I managed to translate the Japanese but I'm not entirely sure! The palette he mainly uses has the Holbein logo on it and he said that his brushes are Holbein too.

He did mention to a different comment that he do like to Holbein watercolor, if this helps(was in Japanese though)
