I am actually going for my black belt in this style, its deadly! Shuai Jiao (Chinese Wrestling) is the most ancient of all Chinese martial arts with a history of over 4,000 years. Its first recorded use, in a military engagement, was when the Yellow Emperor of China fought against the rebel Chih Yiu and his army, 2,697 BC. take a look on kuoshu under programs and history for Shuai Jiao.

Shaoling has a different origin completely. When Bodhidharma came from India, he taught the monks body strengthening yoga that eventually took on martial art forms. However, this account is under dispute. Either way, Chinese Quanfa (fist method, i.e. martial arts) went to Okinawa. In Japanese, Quanfa is Kenpo. Kenpo combined with indigenous arts to become Karate.

SHuai jiao comes from boke which is mongolian wrestling. Mongolians pride themselves on horse back riding and archery. When the chinese adopted it they took all the archery part.

Ok, here is the break down of the history. First came Jiao Di. From Jiao Di came Shuai Jiao. From Shuai Jiao came Jujitsu (not directly, there were around 2500 years of development from both Chinese and Japanese martial arts). From Jujitsu came Judo. From Judo came Aikido.

shuai jiao is the mother of chinese kung fu...the mongols influenced the chinese and vice versa and yes, chinese traders and missionaries taught japanese their version of "chinese boxing". the samurais adopted and modified it. this system is known as jiu-jitsu etc... "shaolin is home to all chinese martial arts."- i do believe in this proverb since chan-buddhism contributed a lot to the spread of unarmed hand to hand combat.

well as a practitioner of this martial art... if u actually put too much force into ur moves u will end up wasting energy and wear out, but if u keep relaxed and use your head and think about the principles of leverage you will find urself a way to escape or submit ur opponent, thats why its called Gentle or soft art

@evanjb92 That is because there are only so many ways the human body can move and fight unarmed. All fighting styles have some amount of convergence. For example, there is this ancient Greek martial art called Pankration where one of the moves is almost exactly the same as the judo tomoe nage.

@Maxi358 I've trained in both as well as Judo and catch wrestling. Of all those I would rate BJJ as the least useful in a real life encounter. That's not to say it's useless but in my experience I've found myself falling back on my other training when I've had to use it. BJJ is great as long as ou can sucker your opponent into taking you to the ground and wanting to stay there.

To anybody who cares too much about "roots": The techniques derive from physical laws, and we humans have a brain, which gives us the ability to find out how to throw a person on our own, without going to a foreign country.

@risingsun08107 that's true, however, technique does matter, fighting is very deep, more than just punching and kicking, anyone can throw a punch or a kick, without proper technique you only use a small fraction of your current power, Martial Arts takes a lot of physical and mental conditioning, which you don't see any more sadly, in America at least, the moments before a fight can greatly influence the outcome, it really just depends, but I know for a fact that combat runs deep

You are wrong. The Indian monk Bodhidharma travelled to China and taught the Shaolin monks several forms of physical training, because they would fall asleep during meditation. Even though the origins of Chinese martial arts date back a few thousand years, the real thing was developed after Bodhidharma by the Shaolin monks.

@Maxi358 There really should be NO doubt that jujitsu was influenced by Shuai Jiao and Chi Na just as Karate was influenced by other forms of Chinese martial arts and many other aspects of Japanese culture. I find people want to argue this mainly because they think if jujitsu was influenced by Shuai Jiao, that some how makes it less Japanese or less its own martial art. This simply isn't true. That'd be like saying Germany isn't original because it uses the Roman alphabet. Well, my 2 cents.

lol. Well my guess is why he onsluaghted the Japanese guy was because of *ahem* the things Japan did to China during the WW2 era. As for Thais, it was said that Muay Thai was the only ALIVE fighting eastern martial art. So, thats why a lot of westerners take it and say "BJJ AND Muay Thai is the best combo". Of course Liu Hailong disproves it.
