I got it before I got into hammocking, but my Klymit Insulated Static V works great in my double layer Blackbird. The outer edges have separate air pockets running vertically, so that it folds up around me in the hammock and stays put nicely. Great relatively affordable pad for those who can't afford an underquilt yet or want something for hammocking and ground sleeping.

Cool, I am doing swell with my pad right inside my sleeping bag.that allows me to adjust my angle easily. My silk liner I slip into then into my bag sort helps that whole senecio and separates me from the pad that’s in the bag. The liner has a pillow box too, so it’s real easy to fashion a pillow with a sweater or pop a camp pillow in there and everything stays in place.

It does but I prefer just laying on the pad if and when I would ever use a pad again. (I am an under quilt guy) Takes getting in and out a couple time to adjust and re=adjust the pad in a double layer to get the right spot but does hold it well once set.

I have an ENO sub 7, which is a little small for some but works ok for me. If it's a little cool I put my Thermarest Prolite 3 inside it, uninflated, or underinflated, so it doesn't pop out of the hammock. If it's colder I fold my poncho in half and put my inflated Thermarest inside it and hang it under my hammock so it's giving me some insulation. It's a little fiddly, but it works. If the weather is bad or there aren't any trees I pitch my tarp and sleep on the ground.

So shug, I live in south Florida, the majority of my camping is going to be in summer conditions, but I plan to go camping up north at least once a year (I prefer the cold 🥶). And underquilts are expensive, I don't want to buy 2 of them, my question is, how well will mixing a pad, and an underquilt work? And is the top quilt as important?

This is why I like synthetic sleeping bags...they don't compress as much so your sides stay better insulated although I still use a closed cell foam pad for the bottom and I'm going to be picking up an underquilt...I also have the same hammock. Hey great video! Question: How do you figure the r-value to temp rating conversion? (You said the r-value 3.7 would equate to about 20-25degrees on the ground)
@shugemery6 жыл бұрын
Usually can find that info on the pad when you buy them. Insulation and R-ValueEven in summer, insulation is important to a good night’s sleep because you lose body heat to the ground. To counteract this, most air and self-inflating pads now have a layer of synthetic insulation inside. A few pads offer down insulation and tend to be geared toward sleeping in very cold environments.A sleeping pad's R-value measures its capacity to resist (hence the "R") heat flow. The higher a pad’s R-value, the better you can expect it to insulate you from cold surfaces. The R-values shown on REI.com product pages are provided by the manufacturers and range from 1.0 (minimally insulated) on up to values of 11.0 or more (very well insulated).Most manufacturers give either an R-value or temperature range to help you gauge how much insulation the pad provides. Thicker pads generally offer higher R-values and the average summer camping pad should be around 3 or higher. Campers who sleep cold, often women, may want to choose a pad with an R-value of at least 4. Some women-specific pads put more insulation in the core and feet area where women lose heat fastest. Note that unlike with sleeping bags, choosing a higher warmth rating in a sleeping pad won’t lead to overheating.

Hi, new subscriber here. Do you find a hammock helping or hurting your back vs. sleeping on the ground? Shug! Can you review some of the Outdoor Vitals hammock gear. Specifically the mummy pod
@shugemery6 жыл бұрын
I don't own one. But I use my own type pod system. did try their Aerie: From over a year ago I slept out in it last week as a test. Did not film, just getting to know it. Got down to 23ºF. They sent me the 20º Aerie. Set it up as a UQ and a pod to see how it hung. As a pod it is pretty good...you can get on an angle in the hammock. I'm 6' and was ok. As in most pods there is a gap up by the head over left shoulder for me. But slip a TQ inside and you could for sure get down to some colder temps. As a UQ you have to set it up just right. I stretched my suspension tightly and hooked it up by cinch buckles on hammock suspension to get it to stretch out and get it to come up right against my buttocks and back. Slept in a partial pod arrangement. Set up like pod but unzipped to knees. Seemed to work best. Kept the bottom up against me that way. I crawled in around 10PM and slept warm until about 4:30 AM. Started to get a bit cold on the buttocks then. As it functions in a bag, pod and UQ and blanket so the 18 ounces of down gets distributed on top, sides and bottom. Less on the bottom as a normal 20º UQ. The beauty of the Aerie is that a person can use it an a bag, pod, UQ or top blanket. Zippers are a bit sticky...you have to be vigilant in holding back the inner zip tape and top flap. I hate zippers! Seems to be baffled and not sewn through. All in all a fairly good piece of gear for all that it does. If looking for JUST a UQ then I don't think this is it. But if needed a piece of gear that is Multi Function then for the price it is pretty good. Made in China.

Hammock Bliss makes a hammock - Skybed - which has a built-in sleeve for holding your pad in place and at a 30-degree angle for a flat lie. No messing around with trying to guess the proper spot like in a double layer hammock or having your pad slip around like in the single layer hammocks.
@shugemery6 жыл бұрын
I've seen those. Nice for pad users for sure.
@johndesanto59536 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Shug, I have had my Skybed for about 7 years now. This past weekend, I was out hanging in New York's Harriman State Park and watching four other hangers struggling to get their pads to stay in place. (It got down to about 34 degrees Saturday night so pads were necessary.) It amazes me that American hammock manufacturers haven't stolen this idea yet. Because, you know, stealing ideas from other companies is what they do best. Hammock Bliss must have some pretty good lawyers, methinks.

Hey Shug. Check out the klymit hammock v pad.

I've seen them. Look nice. But I use underquilts way more than pads.
@whitewalker92496 жыл бұрын
I would go under quilt but I couldn’t find one that worked with my Hennessy asym. Plus I have to pitch on ground a bit due to my area so this is really good for my uses.

Would be nice if that double layer fabric had a zipper so you could fully enclose the pad or just zip it up if you weren't using it

I truly don't think it is needed but one could always add one with some DIY sewing skills.

Spent many a 20 degree night on a pad, gets cold on the edges so I stay away from there.

Wide pad!

Sorry my bad writing. I meant to say with a pad how cold could go with a pad.
@shugemery6 жыл бұрын
All pads have different r-values so with something like an Exped 9 you could go below 0ºF I suppose.

instagram.com/p/BhjyTahlJDO/?taken-by=yourflyisdown We have the same weather in Anoka and I gave it a go in my hammock with my winter setup by setting up my tarp and wrapping the edges around to create door flaps. Check it out at the link above! Snug as a bug.
