I have to give my son credit! After watching me being a single mom of three , receiving my RN degree at the same time, my son is working extra hours so his wife can stay home till their daughter goes to school! I’m so proud of him!!! He said he didn’t want his wife to have to miss the early years like I did!!!

Mothers aren't wrong for that though. The problem is there aren't enough fathers to balance it out. My wife surely raises our daughter. But it balances out with me because I know I have a soft spot for my baby girl. Sons don't need their mothers to turn "hard" to deal with them. They need their fathers to be that balance.

My 1st cousin's son fits this exactly. He is 35 y/o, lives with her, doesn't want to pay toward rent and utilities, treats her like shit, and she takes it because she depends on the cupla dollars she can wrestle out of him. He is a total user, disrespectful, has a good-paying job but cannot manage his money. He blames her for all his problems. She is as weak as tap water. The son is her son-husband, but an abusive one. I've told her don't tell me about how he treats her anymore. IT'S HER FAULT.

Bingo! That’s her surrogate husband. The other day, I was out doing some shopping and an elderly lady came up to me. It was a light conversation at first, but I quickly realized that she was looking for someone to dump her 💩on. She started complaining about how her son never treated her well, yet she moved from her country to help him and his sick wife. 😫😩 When she waited for my response, I gave her something different. “If there’s an issue with your child. You need to consult those who raised him to be that way.” I continued with my day. I’m avoiding more and more people because these same women will spoil their surrogate husbands and then get angry at women who don’t engage with them.

My dad showed me the definition of a man with his actions growing up. I know that a man is the head of the house, takes care of his family and protects them, prays for his family, and doesn’t use the economy to dictate if he can buy food and pay bills. I saw my dad get up every day and provide for his family! My dad spent 30 years in the army and he was a very disciplined hard working man! Daddy didn’t play and he took care of business! I saw my dad plant a garden, buy groceries, cook, clean, work, go hunting, and pay the bills. If a male walked up to me and he didn’t have strong work ethics of manhood, I knew instantly that wasn’t a man! I learned how to be a strong woman watching my dad! My mother was a strong woman as well. Mom took care of business! I was blessed to have seen a true old-school example of a man and a woman! After watching my parents, I determined to be everything good that God created me to be and I made sure that my children grew up to be responsible and productive people in the world! Bring back the old-school teaching that included strong work ethics and quality standards of living for men and for women. Good old-school teaching skipped some generations and a lot of people have their hand out instead of getting up to step into their purpose in life!

This is spot on. One thing I learned about a man that helps around the home and pay bills is if they resent it the whole time you might as well be by yourself. @@teyianneful Welp my grandmother said a man always finds it's way to an empty nest so be visual that man is not the same man that left. You got this! This is what I mean. He made you feel he wanted you completely independent as if it is meant to be a positive feeling when he knew it would make you feel negative. That will make any man or woman feel they are not wanted by that persons side. It is toxic, intentional, unhealthy, and very passive-aggressive. He "trained" you. That is obedience not love.

We built music boxes. Gah, good memories. ☺️ And the school didn't care if the student was a girl, boy, whatever. If your bottom was in a seat, you were being taught. Period. I'll never forget that. All of my male cousins and my brother can cook and do laundry and clean a house... Female relatives can make sure the car maintenance is kept up, I was taught how to change the oil on a car but never had to, and change a tire if necessary.. well rounded human beings are an asset. Also my father said he didn't want us to have to depend on other people.

Growing up in a household where your mother puts all the responsibility on you, leans on you for everything but spoils your lazy younger brother who never cleaned a dish, washed his own clothes or took out the trash not once in his life is rough and after awhile I became slightly resentful. My brother is also schizophrenic and bipolar and has abusive and erratic tendencies. I’ve been attacked by him on 2 separate occasions that damaged my left ear drum. I used to envy the fact he always got what he wanted, was doted on and catered to and was spoiled rotten but now I just feel sorry for him. It did him no real good. At this point I have given up on men entirely bcuz African-American men and all the unnecessary foolishness they come with has given me ptsd. I had a single mom. Me and my brother cooked, wash clothes and anything else that needed to be done. We didn’t like it but we did it with all the calamity that ensued. But now even as a senior citizen only a few men I know can do those things for themselves.

I taught my son to cook, clean and pay bills. I couldn't teach him to be a man but I taught him to be respectful . I tried to make sure he wasn't a menace to society but a law abiding citizen. I taught him how to handle his emotions. Also, work for what you want and not take other people stuff.

Valid points! I am very proud of my sons who saw me struggle and work hard to provide for their families. I couldn't teach them how to be a man but I could teach them how to be responsible and take care of things and not solely rely on me to do everything. This is also why so many men have low opinions of women and women believe they don't need a man.

Most common fight we get into right now! He saw his momma, grandmom doing all the house work for everyone. Sisters and his woman friends still think the same but I'll be doggone if I'm going to work, come home and clean and cook everything. Do the laundry, clean the bathroom and everything while he work and come home and chill. Heck now, get up and help me do this housework. We still fight to this day.

There are many men who grow up in that situation and their response is to HELP or take their mother out of that situation. Part of being a man - and an adult in general - is taking responsibility and holding yourself accountable for who you are. The excuses need to stop.

I am blessed to have my parents and they are still married. I watched my father be a man. My mother still worked and progressed in her profession. I watched them have a mutually respectful marriage. He did the man things and she did the woman things around the home. There were times my mother worked late and he made sure to get supper ready , help with my homework etc. That’s the very least that I expect in my marriage.

My grandmother did everything. My grandfather earned a great living but he didn't do anything else. She really did everything, including having 6 children, a spotless home, and a full-time job. I promised myself I would not do that. My son has been doing his own laundry. Cleaning his own room and bathroom since he was 7. He knows how to cook, but he doesn't. 😂 And he does his own grocery shopping. I don't want my son to "need" to be with anyone just because he can't do things for himself. I've had a lot of guy friends that happened to. 🤦🏾

Schuler, I became a mother at 35 with a son. I knew from jump it would be the 2 of us against the world & being Blk I knew I had to protect his life with mine. But I also knew he needed the basics. I began to teach him the basics of cooking at 9-10. By the time he was in middle school he knew to make his bed when he got out of it. His first job was at 14 in a friend’s cafe. Now at 35 he has what I call a homeownership job at a company in California. I adore you Schuler but please don’t lump ALL single mother’s in the same bucket. Also, the Oakland Black community was the backbone in helping me raise this wonderful man. I just told him yesterday “I worry for you because I’m your Mama, BUT, I’m Not worried About you. “😉💜

There should be a conversation had at the beginning. What kind of relationship are you looking for? Domestic? or Free Willy? If you are a domestic (like cooking, cleaning, taking care of someone), then that is what you should be telling the person your interested in. If you are Free Willy, then there are plenty of fish jumping in ponds, lakes, rivers, and oceans, ready to swim. I wish people would just be honest from the jump. Maybe the world would be a better place. 🙌🙌💯💯

I'm a woman that was mostly raised by my grandparents on my dad's side and my younger brothers were raised by mom pretty much excusively (my dad was in our lives but not in the way he should have been). I grew up, went to college, lived on my own, worked outside the country...etc. Two of my younger brothers (28, 34), have never, I mean NEVER lived outside of home. We all live together with my mom right now (splitting bills of course, as grown folks should) and my mom works a full-time job (she's 67), she works about 10 hours daily. My youngest brother had two jobs but couldn't handle it, so he's back to one. One night him and I were in the kitchen and he was talking about coming home to a home cooked meal (my mom ALSO speands most of the weekend cooking for the upcoming week, she calims she wants a good meal when she gets home but I know what it's actually for). I said, "I'm good", and he was like, come on, everybody likes to come home to a home cooked meal, and I said, "I'm a grown-ass woman, if I want a home cooked meal, I can do it myself and not depend on my 67 year-old full-time working mother to do it", he didn't like that answer but he shut-up. He won't do anything around the house and he won't help with my mom's 2 cats, mind you, when HE had a cat, my mom took care of it more than he did. I have to put the blame on BOTH my parents though, she spoiled him and my dad didn't know how to discipline without being abusive and neglectful. Damn shame.

my mother never kept me, are you crazy, I'm a grown man that keeps house better then most women and learned to cook from 12 years old, my mother was MILITANT, but she also raised me with a lot of love, discipline and patience, theres not much i cant do because my mother could do everything from DIY to simple electrics and decorating, i was raised to be able to do everything in preparation for when i have my own family and women are always blown away by how domesticated and resourceful i am - i dont need a 2nd mother, im fortunate to have an amazing one already, i need a partner who respects me and supports me in everything - but she does have to love herself also, i lot of you don't love yourselves as you should, so you don't take pride in your actions when it pertains to your self care physically and spiritually, and this goes for men too - women arent here to fix and build you they're here to love, support and compliment your manhood by providing you a family and making your house a home, stop being lazy, get up and work on yourselves, so that the right woman can flourish and empower you

My son is 30 yrs old. His Dad passed away in 2003 when he was 9 yrs old. Let’s be clear, I taught him as well as my daughter to cook, clean & yes sew buttons on his shirt. However, I taught them both to cut grass, pull weeds etc. On certain things w/ my son, I was Blessed that his late uncle (my baby brother) & his Godfather stepped up to the plate & taught him things that me as a woman couldn’t. I am Forever Grateful to both my brother & his Godfather for helping me w/ my son.

I’m a single woman, but my house isn’t the cleanest. It’s also not a pig sty. I do clean the place regularly, do the laundry, clean the cats’ litter boxes (you DO NOT want an unclean litter box, because cats will do their business in your house, and then you’re wondering where the hell is that nasty smell coming from) and dust the place. Only my work space is disorganised (at least to the untrained eye), and there would hell to pay if someone were to touch my desk (namely; I’m the hell, and I will deny your existence afterwards). I was also raised by a single mother, but also my grandmothers and five crazy uncles. Being an only child, I learned to care for my self very early on in life, so I have no tolerance for lazy people.
