Great review! I've been using a Blue Yeti for about a year now and have no real issues with it - overall a solid and dependable USB mic. The main problem is a less-than-deal recording space (which can be somewhat overcome through recording software) but I was surprised at how close these two mics were in sound quality. I had been looking at a Shure mic as the next step up (SM7B is out of my price range) and the MV7 seems like a great next mic but, to your credit, this review has really highlighted that this isn't hugely necessary just yet!

Great review! I just recently bought a Shure MV7 after having the Blue Yeti for 4+ years, that mic would pick up everything and constantly having popping/fizzing static noises, it’s cable port also became loose so the cable would always fall out, if I plugged earphones in then it made these beeping noises, the tone sounds harsher and all over the place but now with the MV7 it sounds so sharp and smooth with hardly any background noise, works perfectly with PS4! I love the MOTIV app too so you can lock any custom setting on it before using it on other devices. I still love both mics though as I can take advantage of using the condenser and dynamic for different things :) I have heard that using an SM7B windscreen on the MV7 also helps a lot! Glad I bought that windscreen too as it would stop any potential explosive noises.

This was really helpful. What I had noticed from the MV7 compared to the Blue Yeti would have to have been how it picked up the surrounding sounds. The Blue Yeti had picked up surrounding sounds such as his hands when they clap together, mind you not very loudly, and the shock from hitting the desk while recording. Not only that but the Yeti also picks up keyboard sounds and a lot of surrounding sounds compared to the MV7. The MV7 sounds slightly muffled and a little bit more deafened compared to the Blue Yeti, but it doesn't pick up as many ambient sounds or surrounding sounds as it focuses more on vocals. If you plug the MV7 through its XLR Cable into an audio interface, I believe the sound quality will become a lot better compared to the blue yet in terms of their vocals. On a side note, the Yeti sounds deeper compared to the MV7. In conclusion, I believe for those wanting a good quality mic but don't want to spend too much money, they should purchase the Yeti for podcasts as well as video recording but not singing or production. For those who want to sing or produce music as well as podcast professionally, and don't have the budget for the SM7B at the moment, should definition buy the MV7 as it is a great budget XLR mic.

Very well done and interesting, thanks. As others have said, I am surprised how similar they sound. But, you are going a great job at recording, and I suspect there's a bigger real-life difference in more typical conditions. I don't have the MV7, but while you indicate it's sensitive for a dynamic mic, I doubt it's going to pick up a faucet running downstairs, or the cat scratching 2 rooms away, or simply your clothing rustling if you fidget or move your hands around, as the Yeti does. I'll take a decent dynamic mic over even an expensive condenser mic, for real world recording.
@PhillipRPeck3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comment. I think if the Yeti, or any condenser mic, is picking up that much noise, you have the gain too high. They are usually cardioid (or have that option), so they should reject noise off-axis just like a dynamic

Thanks for the great review. One thing that is making me consider upgrading to the MV7 from the Yeti is the voice isolation and lower sensitivity. I'll post this in every video I hear this until I die : Dynamic Mics behave exactly like condenser mics if they have the same polar pattern. The unwanted room sounds don't get acousticaly quiter when they reach dynamic mics vs condensers. The mic doesn't know if it's coming from afar or not, and doesn't discriminate low volume sounds, because it's supposed to convert acoustic sound into electricity in an ANALOG way, so identical in relative terms for every part of the signal, so there's no expander effect either in dyn mics. The misconception comes from the fact that those mics are low sensitivity and don't sound as harsh when very close so people get closer, speak louder to compensate for the low output volume. So you don't have to put as much gain as if you were speaking normally at a nominal distance. So of course there's not as much gain on the distant sounds (and btw since you're closer to the mic, they're relatively that much further away from the mic, see the inverse square root law). This misconception is just a byproduct of how people use the mic because of its limits, not of the technology itself. You can get the exact same result with a condenser but you'll be able to apply 25 to 35dB less gain and you'll remove that much in EMIs and hiss.

Hiya - Question - I have been using the Yeti for my YT channel for almost 2 years; good mic, I have realised I actually have a slight room reverb, I didn't know anything when I started. So Research has lead me to looking at MV7 because I don't have a treated room, and need USB. You mention its rather sensitive for a Dynamic mic, would you still recommend it to me? My room isn't echoing, its not really too bad, but it could be better so if I can improve it, I want to. Also, mouth sounds as a side issue are also a battle which I clean up with software etc, but I would think a dynamic like MV7 would pick up less mouth sounds than Yeti by way of being less sensitive?
@PhillipRPeck Жыл бұрын
It could help with reverb because you're generally going to need to be a bit closer to the MV7 than the Yeti, but you could try just getting a bit closer to the Yeti and turning down the gain so it isolates your voice a bit better. If that's possible. The MV7 will definitely be less sensitive to mouth sounds, but it is pretty susceptible to plosives so you have to be careful there. Lot's of people pick up the SM7B windscreen for the MV7, which helps a lot. A little reverb isn't a big deal, it helps your recording sound more natural. But if it's a big, echoey room, then yeah, could be distracting. You could add some rugs, hang some stuff on the walls, etc. Breaking up and absorbing sound waves with everyday objects helps a lot, too

Just got a refund for my yeti, and bought the Shure MV7 - yeti had massive bugs with the usb cable constantly not sending signal through to the computer.

That's a bummer. I've heard there have been QC issues with Yeti after Blue was aquired by Logitech. Not sure if that's true. But good luck with your MV7!

Well this convinced me to going for the MV7 instead of the Blue Yeti as an upgrade from the hydra streaming kit. A dynamic mic will help against picking up my wife in the background when we're gaming together!

Now that Yeti has been bought by Logitec and the controls are gaming oriented and on the web, makes zero sense to buy the Yeti. Selling it and getting the Sure

Ok ! here you are not wearing headphones, so I guess the sound coming from your computer speakers right? do you hear like you are talking to a nice mic, like a nice voice? I can't hear the difference when I talk to this mic or without the mic. I guess I don't know how to fix that.
@PhillipRPeck3 жыл бұрын
I already monitored the levels with headphones then recorded into Adobe Audition and Audacity. I think you really need to get some headphones as well as a piece of software to record into. It sounds like you're expecting it to work like a PA system like at a live event.

I am torn between mv7 vs Rode NT USB. I work in a slightly noisy environment. Suggestions?
@PhillipRPeck2 жыл бұрын
The MV7 might be a better choice for noisy environments. It should be less sensitive and better at noise rejection than the NT

Hello! Thank you very much for this video. I watched a lot of reviews on various USB microphones and did not find information about the possibilities of connecting, for example, Blue Yeti without a computer directly to a DSLR camera via a headphone output with USB power through a power bank. Tell me is it possible? Do you know?
@PhillipRPeck2 жыл бұрын
Hi. I'm really not sure if that setup would work to be honest. I think the Yeti and other similar USB microphones need driver software to interface correctly with the computer and therefore I don't know what would happen if you just plugged one into a camera via a 3.5" cable. Could be worth a shot but it might be easier just to get an on-camera video microphone and run a long 3.5" cable to it. Something like the Rode Videomic NTG

Blue Yeti Pro gives you 24-bit and XLR out, so, more similar to the MV7, and BYP will also do 96kHz.
@PhillipRPeck3 жыл бұрын
Those are good points but at least it's their for people who might get use out of it. Maybe VO actors? Or recording instruments?

Seems like the MV7 would be better at cutting out keyboard sounds if typing while talking. But, the Yeti is more forgiving if you're not super close. Is that correct?

These mics are powered over USB. You don't need a preamp or mixer. You can run the MV7 over XLR if you want but it's not necessary

I recently purchased the Shure MV7 for my voiceover work...excellent quality and can be used either USB or XLR. The SMB7 is still King (same with Sennheiser 416) but for the money the MV7 and Synco D-2 (which I also have) are outstanding mics and used extensively. Hey, Blue Yeti is popular because it is also a great mic! Awesome review video.

Thanks Phillip. The Bkue Yeti was the first mic i purchased for my content creation. This was before i understood the different types of mics. I ended up selling after I learned it was a condenser mic and that it picks up ambient sound I now own the 1. Samsung Q2U 2. Rode Procaster ( with psa mic stand) 3. Audio Técnica All condenser mics. I feel condenser mics work best for podcasts. Great comparison. I am now a new follower.
