Thank you for bringing Joe in. I walked in to Joe at a GateCon in Vancouver in 2003, literally walked into him. He was coming out of the elevator and I was going in and we collided. I was so embarrassed and apologetic, and this man was the nicest person in the room. He asked if I was okay, he stopped and took a minute to chat. Later that day I was lined up for an autograph on the DVD cover of season one box set. He was very humble and asked me if I had walked into anyone else that day. He left an impression that hey this dude is human after all. Seeing him here now, I see he hasn't changed, still a classy guy.

One thing that made Stargate SG1 and Atlantis so good was the family friendly nature of the show and it's light-hearted nature. Universe killed me because it wasn't something I felt was safe to watch with the kids; you just never knew (language, sex, gore) episode to episode. SG1 and Atlantis was like a warm blanket you put on to make you feel good... Universe, although good (especially in season 2), lacked the comfy vibes and feel-good nature of the other series. I loved the premise and potential story telling of Universe and the acting was outstanding, but I feel like the world has enough "edgy" to deal with and we need to go back to what makes us feel good. In the end, there is room for both shows (and I'd watch them both if they ran side-by-side), but we need Atlantis / SG1 style show back on the air. I can only hope Amazon can appreciate what Stargate is and the original fan base. We've been abandoned for so long...

Funny enough, the first season of SG1 has full frontal female nudity, because it was originally a Showtime show and it was thought that premium cable viewers would expect that. So Daniel's wife is stripped naked by her Goa'uld captors. They quickly abandoned that, but it's something to keep in mind if you're introducing your kids to what is otherwise a very wholesome, family-friendly show

I very much enjoyed this ep - comfortable, positive energy, peppered with humour and anecdotes and tidbits, and Joe Flanigan delightful throughout. What a nice human. I loved and still love SGA, and still feel aggrieved and frustrated by the injustice of a series that good being cancelled in its prime. I hadn't felt that gutted since Enterprise was cancelled. So much of the frustration arises from knowing how good something is, and it's being taken away, and all the fans and most of the people involved can see what a mistake that is, yet we have exactly no input or control over a frankly baffling decision being made by one or two people. It's absurd. Trying to reconcile why the needs of those few should outweigh ours, the many, can drive you mad. Enterprise had begun playing with some exciting possibilities in season 4 - Coto was working, cool TOS threads were emerging, the promise of that fan holy grail of canon unity and greater in-universe cohesion and then bam... gone. Utter disregard for creativity and ideas and fanbase excitement. Like the 90s Trek serieses I grew up with, SGA reigns supreme in the repeat viewing stakes, and also like 90s Trek is supreme comfort viewing. It nailed the plot, action, characterisation, family dynamic, humour, performances. Hope. Optimism. *Fun.* Joe was spot on about the adding the lightness and self-deprecation. Like O'Neill, Shepherd was an unconventional, emotionally intelligent, evolved alpha male character. Seeing that was immediately engaging and so much more interesting than the alternative. That the producers couldn't see this golden goose still bafffles me. That they would choose to kill it in favour of a series which singularly failed to bring anyone hope, optimism and fun, is myopic at best. I've never spoken to a SGA fan who isn't really, really a SGA fan. We all still mourn its loss. Thank you Joe for your grace, and for sharing your stories and insights, and to Connor and the Shuttlepod team for an informative and (for me) somewhat cathartic episode. I think I needed that. 🖖💙

I long for the days when writers could write with the kind of brilliance in all of the Stargate episodes. I don’t know how many times I can rewatch, because other than Star Trek, Orville and Babylon 5 nothing today compares. I fall asleep to these actors many nights. I also long for the days when they managed to produce 20 episodes. You’d think with the advanced tech they now have that they could accomplish more, not less. More acting and focusing on the story, rather than the special effects could help. Thanks for the great work!

It was a great show as usual. These interviews always go beyond whatever show the guest is known for which is why I enjoy these interviews regardless of whether I'm a fan of the represented franchise. As for the whispering, this is a recorded show. The live premiere is just the live chat not a live show, so by the time you all heard it, it was too late to do anything about it. The Shuttlepod Show acknowledged the error in the live chat today. Mistakes happen from time to time, we're all human and it happens, it didn't take away anything from the show for me.

What a wonderful guest. Fascinating to hear about the behind-the scenes machinations of the industry. As a huge Stargate fan, my friends and I pretty much guessed the reason behind the tone of SG-U, but were also baffled by it because SG fans and BSG fans didn't really cross-pollinate. This explains so much. Such a shame, really. That said, I think SG-U could have made it, after all it wasn't until the 3rd season that TNG really hit its stride. I 100% agree that the SG franchise never got the critical recognition it deserved. I think it suffered from the 'art is angst' mentality. As authors such as Terry Pratchet showed, a lighter tone doesn't mean a lack of depth, paucity of ideas, or a lack of meaning. Also, I feel SG lacked pretention--wearing the derivative elements of it's stories on its sleeve; and I think some people take this as a lack of creativity or originality when in reality, ALL art and artists stand on the shoulders of those that came before (hell, Shakespeare used a Norse legend composed by Saxo Grammaticus as the basis of Hamlet). SG was just cheerfully honest about it (in the same way X-files celebrated it's influences, casting the stars of the shows that influenced it--Roy Thinnes, Darren McGavin). P.S. I absolutely loved the Vegas episode of Atlantis. It was probably my favorite episode of the while series.

I have all of Stargate on DVD and I have watched SG: SG-1 over 50 times easy. I have also watched SG: Atlantis over 50 times and I never get tired of any of them. I also loved Star Trek: Enterprise and really wish it has been on longer. I think I have only watched SG: Universe 2 or 3 times and it was a real effort. I remember reading that RDA had specifically asked to play his character with more of a sense of humor because he didn't think he could endure the show if he had played it like the Kurt Russell version. I think SG-1 and Atlantis are the easiest shows to watch over and over again and they always entertain. I will say that when I was a Professor at West Point, our Department Head was a huge Stargate fan and that was when they were still on TV. He would come into work on Monday and talk about each episode with me as we waited for students to arrive. Great interview and very interesting.

Joe probably isn't interested, but Stargate SG-1 was actually a much more serious show in its first five seasons on Showtime. It had a more grounded military/USAF tone and was about contemporary late-90s geologists, archaeologists, and other experts getting in way over they heads trying to understand the unknown with the tools at their disposal, quite unlike the later seasons which almost transformed into a superhero show. Earlier seasons' episodes addressed topics like United States imperialism, war crimes, nuclear proliferation, corruption in the senate and military, the economics of soldiers' lives, and a variety of ethical quagmires. There was also more character drama involving things like the accidental suicide of Jack O'Neill's son, and the abduction and violation of Daniel's wife. The Scifi channel wanted a more adventure-toned show, and Richard just began playing himself the longer the show went on. He did some phenomenal dramatic acting in the early seasons - he's capable of it, he just isn't interested in it for whatever reason. SG-1 had basically become a parody of itself by the time Atlantis was introduced.

Met Flanigan at a convention, he was signing autographs and for some reason as I got there there was no one waiting to get one, so I got mine and we spent like 3-5 minutes talking a bit about his acting and Stargate. He was really nice about it and he it felt like he was genuinely happy to spend a couple of minutes indulging me, like I understand meeting fans and talking to strangers all day must be exhausting, but Flanigan was super nice in real life. The two actor encounters that I have had in my life that I will never forget is with Flanigan and with Robert Englund (Freddy K) because they seemed happy to meet a fan as opposed to a friendly smile and just signing a photo quickly.

Awesome show. Joe is a real talker 😂😂 I hope he will start his new Joe versus Joe podcast soon. I'm looking forward to it 🤞

It's really great to see a more in depth behind the scenes discussion here as opposed to a few anecdotes and moving along. Not that there's anything wrong with other guests, it's just quite interesting to hear Joe's extended perspective on Stargate.

If ever a show needed to come back it’s this one, it had such a strong following. We never got a proper ending. I’m sure they could get back the main cast again, even Jason. Joe was great in SGA and I really miss David Hewlett, he brilliant as McKay.

So glad this showed up in my recommended, didn't know the channel even existed.

Just re-watched SGA still bloody great. I wish they'd make good TV like they used to.

How am I just now finding out about this podcast? I met Connor a long time ago during a Star Trek convention in Illinois, may have been the only guy there who was talking to him about Stargate at a Star Trek convention. Still my favorite villain in Stargate and I love the work he did in Trek. Also got to give a shout out to Joe, loved Col. Shepherd..

This confirms EVERYTHING the hardcore fans of Stargate Atlantis believed at the time. We followed the ratings of SGU and we knew it was bad from the beginning because it lost the humor, it lost the quirkiness. Atlantis was already a GOLDEN GOOSE and they killed it for the grass on the other side of the fence...LITTERALLY!

100% agree. While they were chasing the tone of Battlestar - they weren't thinking about the fans... how often do you rewatch Battlestar versus SGA? I enjoyed Battlestar at the time, but I don't revisit it tbh, and I re-watch programs in the whole as a life habit. What I revisit the most is Voyager and SGA... that's how you know as a fan how franchises peaked imo. Have never re-watched Battlestar beyond originally getting the series DVDs. Whereas the SGA box is falling apart from repeatedly going there.

@@RobotiSal I never watched a full episode of Battlestar Galactica. I've seen tons of KZbin clips though...looks very dark and moody. I rematch SG-1 About every 5 years...and SGA...the best parts like First Strike, Seige frankly the first 2 seasons and season 4 were absolute fire! The tone was light but more intense than SG1 they really didn't know what they had there.

"Vegas" set that series to a high bar, with Joe, and his wraith showdown, indelible. X-files meets Rockford Files. MGM, get your (studio) head out of the sand, and bring that IP to market, again, please?
@Kerify Жыл бұрын
It's up to Amazon Studios. Yeah, MGM is a part of that bc Amazon bought them out, but I'm happy to tell you that we're getting a SG1 *continuation* movie + TV series. Let's hope these idiots at Amazon don't screw this up so the tv series CAN start; following the movie, that is. 😃

First I want to say, great show , and Joe Flanigan is absolutely my favorite Stargate actor out of all Stargate series. FYI a 30.06 round is much larger and more destructive then a .223 or 5.56 which is the most common rounds in an AR-15 platform. Not trying to sound like an advocate for any, but just pointing out that the ignorance of facts is what gets most arguments started when it comes to debating, or just casually discussing firearms.

Could you please stop whispering the show? I could hear whispering in the background & it was distracting. But, as a *Gater,* this ep. meant SO much to me. 🥰 *I'm a huge* #StarGate *fan & this was EPIC having Joe on!* Iah tho, keep up the great work w the great guests.👍 Really enjoying this podcast series! 💖🤩✨️ This show is 🔥🔥🔥

Yes. It’s a production tool which is normally auto muted for the mix. However, for whatever reason in this one episode that didn’t happen and episode was live before it was noticed. Sorry y’all.
