Damn! This is some serious, no nonsense skill, and some serious, no nonsense artistry! Greg and Keith would indeed be very proud, and I too am humbled by the spot-on precision and accuracy of this great guitar lesson. I'm nearly 70-years old now, one of many forgotten or discounted Vietnam vets, but I had the great fortune of seeing ELP perform live in concert multiple times, in those earliest years, and like many others of my time, I too will join Greg and Keith in the hereafter, but that very special time in American history, will be with me, in heart and spirit, forever.

"Shutup & Play" tutorials for acoustic guitar are the best I've seen on KZbin-- I think they're fantastic. With all due respect, though, I would like to make one correction on this tutorial, and ONLY one. During the chorus, (Am, Em, D) the Em is actually an Em7. I've watched several live performances of Greg Lake performing this song. Sometimes he used the drop-D tuning, in which case the fingering is different than when he performed it in standard tuning. But when he used standard tuning, one can see his finger playing the note "D" on the 3rd fret of the B string during the Em chord, which makes it an Em7. Other than that, I think the musician in this video absolutely nailed the song. I also think he did a fabulous job of teaching it.
@kromedge6 жыл бұрын
Great tutorial as always. It sounds decent in E Flat tuning as well (have 3 other songs on the go that are in E flat so I left it tuned that way). You are by far the most meticulous instructor I’ve come across and I mean that in the best possible way. At 60 years old, I’m able to take away a lot from your videos. Thank you!

Hi, thank you so much for this lesson, it's really great. I'm working my way through it. One thing you might find interesting to listen to again is the right channel part, it has some additional variations. It's just how you describe it in the intro, and first and second chorus and verse. During the guitar solo over the third verse, the G arpeggio is the same, but D arpeggio is strummed and alternated with Dsus4. The strumming is slightly different in the chorus. The fourth verse/chorus is the same as the first and second. The fifth verse uses the same G arpeggio, followed by the open D, then a strum on the upper three strings of the D chord. On the last repeat of the verse, just the open D is sounded. The following chorus sounds different to me, I have no idea of what he's doing but the voicings sound somewhat different. There's a lot of variation in the outro strumming on the right channel part. Again, thanks so much for this lesson, I'd have never picked up on the stuff you cover. Amazing to me how this song is called "easy" or "simple" by most books and people, to me, it's complex and rich.

Yes echoing another’s comment on the quality of your vids. Top notch, very detailed. It’s worth pointing out, that I think the original could be a 12 string?
@MusicAMG8 жыл бұрын
If you look here on KZbin, look for the demo videos for EHX pedals. You can play all the synth parts with just the guitar. No special pickups needed. They have one that demonstrates their use in this song..
@dennylibertario22462 жыл бұрын
Wonderfully entertaining, informative, and loving tutorial on a classic tune by one of the preeminent progressive rock bands of the last generation.....so kudos, bravo, etc. Your channel/work-product are outstanding. Can I offer a couple of thoughts? Your tutorial captures the double tracking of the guitar part .... the fullness of the acoustic guitar in the recording made me wonder whether Lake used a 12-string, but your video with the Drop-D tuning and high-end acoustic suggests one can get pretty close to the recording with a couple of 6-string guitars or a blended arrangement perhaps. The tone you derive in the video is incredibly good. Other thought relates to mimicking the Emerson synth solo at the end in the guitar by incorporating the descending and ascending bass line that Keith takes in the initial keyboard passages. Makes the Am to Em progression more full. When performing live, Lake could make it easy by using chords only; other times, the guy arpeggiated or finger picked when accompanying himself. He was something.
