It definteley looks like new, very cool. About the glass, all recent rolexes have a crown on the crystal. However if you look closely, you'll see an S inside the crown, indicating it is a service crystal. Another thing to mention, if you polish the watch too often the lugs are going to thin out. Most watch aficionados don't recommend polishing the lugs, because in time it could change the profile of the case and affect the value.

I've owned a 2007 Daytona since I bought it on the grey market in 2016. During lockdown, I wore it so infrequently that one of the pushers got stuck and the crown started to feel like the rubber seal had expanded somehow and it was an effort to wind it or pop it out. I used a small pair of metal pliers to try to unstick the pusher and of course, the case (and the pusher) ended up pretty scratched. All in all, I had to go get it serviced. When it came back - wow. it looked fantastic and the crown/pushers now feel like silk. As you say in the video - it's expensive, but money well spent, particularly as mine hadn't been service by the previous owner. So the poor watch had not only been attacked with a pair of pliers, it had gone 15 years before its first service!

I got my sub date back from service a few weeks ago, and it was slightly cheaper at £650, but it came back in the same box and leather wallet, and looked brand new. Polishing the case is a mistake. You get the shiny “new” thing in exchange for the original lug profile. A refinished case watch is worth less than a scratched case one. I suggest you do your research about the topic and consider it when its time to send the OP 41 for service.

@@cheesedoodle4236 thanks for the reply. I agree with you on the cracked case, not on the greasy, dirty and scratched pieces. I learned my lesson the hard way many years ago, when Rolex returned my then 5 year old watch from service inside the charming green pouch, looking shiny as new, but with pointy and uneven lugs. A disaster... Since then, I always sent watches to service with specific instructions not to refinish the case. In my humble opinion scratches are like wrinkles or white hair, you get them as the watch ages with you, and they make it uniquely yours. Anyway, just saying...people should do whatever gives them pleasure, including polishing away to oblivion. Cheers!
@kls19122 жыл бұрын
You are 100% correct. Polishing will remove the scratches but they will come back very quickly anyway plus as you say 99% of the time after the polish the shape is different from factory finish like here. We can clearly see the lugs are rounded compared to factory finish.

Rolex caliber 4130 The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona has been using the same movement for more than a decade. It is powered by the caliber 4130 which is a self-winding mechanical chronograph movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. The caliber is designed and built in such a way that it demands fewer components than a standard chronograph movement. Fewer components mean less moving parts, less friction, and therefore improving the movement’s reliability. The Daytona has become a legendary watch from Rolex, having established itself as the single most popular watch from the brand. But The Daytona hasn’t always had this legendary status. In fact, originally, in 1963 when the model was launched, it was not met with celebrations and applauses. It was originally equipped with the Valjoux caliber 72. The fact that the Daytona did not sell well at the time may come as a surprise, but there are even stories of dealers specifically saying they don’t buy Daytonas, and how Rolex retailers gave away free Daytonas as enticements.

it is not glass it is Sapphire is the second strongest jewel on the Mohs mineral hardness scale, second only to the diamond. The crystal is usually made up of a sapphire-quartz combination. The screens are not completely shatter proof since strength is different than hardness, but it does mean that almost nothing other than diamond is able to scratch the face. This means that those who like to keep their watch faces completely scratch-free often go with this watch crystal. There are many modern examples of using sapphire crystals as screens in watches and other devices. The Richard Mille watch series, including the Tourbillion, is one such example. Sapphire is tough, but it takes delicate work during machining. Such watches often take 1,000 hours of machining with up to 430 hours pre-forming case components and another 350 just for watch case polishing. Watches with sapphire crystals can often cost between $100 and $300 or more depending on the watch. They are also a common addition to diving watches due to their clearness and toughness despite water pressure of 50 meters or more.
