We Americans hate tipping culture too, we feel trapped by it as customers. Because even though the server will get at least minimum wage if they don't get enough tips, minimum wage in America is far, FAR below the necessary amount of money to live. So you are basically guilt tripped by being forced to think "Well the service wasn't that great, but this person still deserves to pay their bills, and if I don't tip they might not be able to do that." Trust me, basically everyone in America wants to be done with tipping culture, but we need a much higher minimum wage first.

As someone who use to get tips it’s crappy cause tips get taxed as well. Some companies have systems where you HAVE to put in how much you made in tips for it to be taxed from your check along with the tips people had charged to their card so it’s not much unless you commit a little bit of tax evasion. Plus, lots of customers use “giving a tip” as a means of guilting service workers to breaking rules
@Vancev99x2 ай бұрын
That's nice and all but here is how I see it. If it means so much for them to survive they will put their best service up. Minimum wage sucks but if you can't handle the service industry switch professions. I don't feel anything for not tipping when service is bad. And my wife is a server. She has the same sentiment it's not hard to smile and serve people. Not all people are the greatest to serve but a good server knows when to take an L on a bad customer and when to suck it up cause the outcome may surprise you. But don't ever worry about a servers life if they aren't treating you with proper service. They will learn. Write a note why or tip like a dollar. But don't ever feel obligated to tip for bad service it will only reinforce the climate we are in and promote more bad service.

About the tips thing: you'll often find in the US that people who work the kitchen have a completely different view on tips than people who work the front. In America, the waitstaff make more with tips than they would on just minimum wage, so they all support the idea of tipping. The beleaguered cook and the poor buggers working the dishes at the back could care less about whether people tip or not because more often than not they'll not see penny or dime if it.

16:10 that’s true- if you take 2/hr and make tips, employers must pay minimum wage. The thing is, minimum wage is like 7.25 where I live, which is not even CLOSE to remotely livable, so servers still depend on tips unless laws get passed to raise the minimum wage
@galaxyvictoriano99992 ай бұрын
"if you fall short on your tips, then they just pay you anyway" is CRAAAZY. no they DONT lmao, absolutely not. to clarify, im speaking about the US. in many states in the US, food servers are paid well BELOW MINIMUM WAGE and are meant to make the rest in TIPS. people live off their tips, thats where their money comes from. thats why people want to work dinner rush and weekends, because if you have a slow shift, oops you just made $5.75 an hour for a full shift. inb4 "thats illegal" no its not. thats the problem. thats why she said to pay people a living wage and stop making them ask for tips, because they literally get paid BELOW the federal minimum wage.

The thing about restaurants giving below minimum wage, they should sell their food below market price too, no???
@nanobots95502 ай бұрын
You're wrong. The minimum wage in the US is 8 dollars per hr, so 5 dollars per shift is illegal but employers can choose to get paid below minimum wage usually at 2 dollars so they can get tips and if it's not enough they get paid back though everyone chooses tip over minimum wage because of cost of living crisis.
@galaxyvictoriano99992 ай бұрын
@@nanobots9550 im not wrong. there are jobs that are allowed to pay below federal minimum wage if they can theoretically earn the difference in tips. its different in different states. when my mother waited tables in Chicago in the early 00s she was paid an hourly wage of around $3 dollars-- well below federal minimum wage at that time. in washington, that was not the case because of state laws. there is a reason tipping is considered mandatory in the US. its because employers dont pay a living wage and instead make them rely on tips.

I love how James said in the beginning of the video “I’m just not in the mood to laugh” but laughing quite a bit. (Nailed it!)😂 This is my favorite video!!

everyone is beautiful" has been misused and changed over time. Originally, it was supposed to mean that everyone is beautiful to someone. The idea was that no matter what you look like, there is someone in this world who thinks you are beautiful.

unfortunately James is incorrect about tipping in the US. It varies by state, but most will NOT pay you min wage if you don't make enough in tips. Some people will work 60 hours a week and they don't get OT for that.

This is hilarious..when I was in my early twenties (years ago), I called a restaurant for clarification, because I thought the wages for the waitress job was a typo.😂😂😂

19:33; So on the Santa discussion: Kids - Santa’s a real person to them Adults (for me) - Santa’s a spirit. The way I saw Santa was I was a child was like a superhero, like Superman or Batman a fictional hero and makes you feel good. Whereas growing up and getting to the point where I knew he wasn’t a real person. I believe, that Santa represents the joy of giving and receiving gifts. You give him milk and cookies/a carrot (for the reindeer of course) and you get something in return. Gift giving. To me Santa represent the joy and happiness associated with Christmas 🎅

It’s not like that don’t know where James got that information about tipping but nah they ain’t paying more if you don’t make money in tips you lost out
@dakotakollar52572 ай бұрын
Yeah I have no clue where his brother got that info cuz it’s one of the reasons why ppl who live on tips are the ones with like four jobs or working double shifts 7 days a week ha.

Now, to be fair, i literally just heard this within the past 5 years myself so idk if its a state thing (im from NY) rather than a federal thing or what have you, but i've definitely had this confirmed by multiple people who have worked in food service for time that if you don't make minimum wage with your tips, then the employer is legally required to make up the difference.
