As someone who was once shy and overtime came out of my shell, I 100% agree with the video.at least for me, I needed someone to force me to talk or I never would have the verbal communication skills I have today

Maybe just let them learn and stop insisting they pretend to be different

I really like the mentality of making class all about engaging with one another.

I've got a course twice a week who are literally 90% all shy, sometimes they just stare at me and say nothing, and if they talk to each other they do it almost in whispers

Don’t do this whatever you do if your teacher. I have severe anxiety and have to take meds for it. This guy saying this is an awful way to learn. If you are a teacher you should be patient, calm and respectful to the student. Do not restrict them for being themselves you will fail.

Hi Erick, how can I approach this for online classes ? I prepare a lot of material but they don't like to engage because they don't want to share anything about themselves. Any ideas ?

I'm watching this video because almost every subject teacher forced me to answer their questions today every teacher called on me and it sucks stop forcing shy students to speak now I'm traumatised to go to school
@etacude2 жыл бұрын
Sorry that you've had to feel that pressure. Instead of jumping straight into speaking and answering long questions. Perhaps try out little by little. Practice in front of a mirror, record yourself talking about your favorite topic on your phone. Ask a friend to ask you some tougher questions and so on. That way you grow with confidence and it doesn't scare you too much in class.

@@etacude I try but i cant because i have anxiety and cant help it there's also a lot of other students in class that are raising their hands and i dont know what's wrong with teachers they like to embarass the quiet students

I was a shy kid and I'm starting to teach for the first time next week. They specifically told us NOT to point kids out and make them speak. It can be traumatizing. These kids come from mixed backgrounds and have a lot of mental baggage. I will NOT force my students to speak out loud if they are shy. There is a difference between encouraging kids and forcing them. I will be teaching middle schoolers and some won't know English AT ALL. I'm sorry you had that experience.

this is a fair point but a lot of research into trauma and anxiety indicates that avoiding the thing that makes you anxious can make the problem worse because it reinforces in your brain that the thing must be a threat since you're avoiding it.

"Create a comfortable classroom environment" "I forbid you from having a certian personality trait! Who you are is forbidden in this environment, you are to force yourself to speak when I command you to. I will also humiliate you in front of your peers when you do not answer in a timely manner!"

That is misleading. You can't make someone do it your way let alone he is shy
@etacude Жыл бұрын
Being shy doesn't mean they can't do something. It's our job as teachers to create a comfortable environment and encourage students to perform. The modern trend, however, is to believe that shyness = inability to perform publicly, which is false. I'm sorry if I didn't explain it well or sound too forceful. 😃
