This performance has to be one of the best ever recorded, but why leave out the 3rd movement? I can't find this one on KZbin and it puts my teeth on edge to have to go from the first two movements straight into the 4th.

The full video used to be listed probably 5 to 7 years ago but I can only assume it got yanked due to copyright. It's a damn shame. 😢

Just imagine how good this orchestra could have been in this era if they hadn't systematically excluded probably 95 percent of humans from even auditioning. I used to just take this in stride, but the older l get and the more l live, the more l realize that for all Europe's societal progress, their orchestras remained enormously racist and sexist for decades after most European institutions had reformed. And that is absolutely shameful.

It doesn't get better than this. No pathos. Just sheer emotion. I cried with Leonard...

I never knew this piece until I played it with a local volunteer group several years back. It was life-changing, Lenny really conveyed the spirit of this piece for sure

Usually 3 trumpet parts, but I'm guess they doubled up the lead so there are enough decibels to power through the wall of strings in the last fanfare. Wonderful sound, but man, they're going super sharp on those notes lol

Complete and total technical brilliance from both orchestra and director. But I still cannot get away from the fact, that I,, personally, prefer the Barbarolli/Hallé version.

The video registration is pretty typical of its age: very conductor-focused, and we don't really see anything of what the orchestra is doing aside from some lateral shots of orchestral groups. It's not quite as bad as Karajan's stuff, but not far off. It's both impressive how good such registrations are nowadays (look at the Orchestre de Paris, HR-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt or particularly the Stockholm Phil) and how bad they were in the past.

Beautiful music by Sibelius. Masterful conducting by Bernstein. However, I do think some of his tempos are too slow.
