Siberia ... For many inhabitants of the planet, this is still a mysterious, unexplored and frightening place on Earth.
To this day, there are many tales about Siberia that are far from reality. Indeed, everything is not as clear and simple here as in the forest of the European parts of Russia. ( • The Journey to Siberia... )
Taiga is a harsh world that does not forgive mistakes. Despite the fact that we are in the 21st century and everyone has a phone and GPS, it is better for the average person not to intrude in the taiga, there are laws and traditions that must be known and followed, otherwise you may not come back.

All these hypocrites that complain about the conditions in northern Canada should watch this film. Here is a people that adjusts to the harsh conditions of their environment in an industrious manner, not waiting for handouts from the government. These people deserve everybody's utmost respect!

This is how God intended people to live... Pure, without the "frills" of modernized society. The latter may provide temporary comforts, but culminates in decay, vice, the perdition of youth - and eventually, collapse. Hard work, a closeness with nature, is healthier and a more natural lifestyle.

The joke did not translate very well dubbed, but when that guy said : We've been using nail since Lenin "released them" it was very tongue and cheek and was some very top notch Russian humor. He looks stoic, but I bet that's the funny social guy of that village!

My first introduction to Taiga was through a Russian children's book by Arkady Gaidar called Chuk and Gek. As a 9 year old I was fascinated by the barren, frozen beauty of Taiga. There was a character in the book...a gruff but good hearted man who lived there at a geological research station with his dog. I still treasure the book and reread it...in my mid forties.

There is a book, I can't recall the name now, that I read many years ago. Written by a low ranking Wehrmacht soldier who fought on the Eastern Front, it details many of the horrors German soldiers endured fighting there. What stuck in my mind from this book was how fearful German soldiers were of being captured alive by Russian soldiers. Their greatest fear, according to this book, was falling into the hands of 'Siberians'. In which case a German soldier could be sure of having his genitals hacked off and forced down his throat before being dismembered alive. Such was the fearsome reputation of Siberians the Germans chose to fight to the death rather than fall into their hands.

I know what you're taking about. I've seen a couple of documentaries on this. The Russians did not play around. If the cold didn't outright kill the Germans the Siberians would.
