Cats like dogs vocal level is dependant on there size. Look at small sized dogs, when they bark its at a very high pitch, bigger dogs its more lower pitch. It is the same with cats. That tiger was indeed meowing, just at a very low pitch... ;-)

@ClayLPlay I'm not sure what you mean - the enclosure is actually a lot bigger than the video shows. That and it's much safer for a tiger in a zoo than it ever could be for them in the wild - due completely to the fact that it's natural habitat is rife with poachers looking to make money off his parts. It's SAD that he can't be in the wild - but it's not more safe there.

That's a chuff. Tigers do it. The only big cat that cat meow and purr is a cheetah and that's because ancient Egyptians domesticated them so they are technically house pets released into the wild. It's why they take L's from everything.

They have very wide range of sound expressions including vast variety of meowing sound!By the way here it wasn't a meowing sound-it was a calling sound!Apparently since this is a tigress-she certainly went into estrous and calls for partner!And any variation of exactly meowing sound is much quieter than this:such calls are audible for a human being from 4 kilometres away and for another tiger-from 8 kilometres away!While meowing tiger is audible for a human ear from not more than 100 metres away and usually even less!
