Karen Carpenter was lost in the prime of their popularity due to Anorexia Nervosa - she basically starved herself to death. It brought worldwide attention to the condition, which is related to bulemia. A unique voice and style, in an era of raw music with no autotune or sophisticated effects. Such a loss.

Fringe was indeed a fashion in the 70s. The 70s were a very earthy decade and earth colors were very popular like browns, yellows, and orange especially in home decor. It was a groovy and weird decade but it was an awesome decade. I grew up in the 70s and remember hearing the Carpenters on the radio but didn't care for them much because I was a little kid. As an adult I totally love the Carpenters. Glad you found them. They're worth diving into.

The Carpenters, siblings Karen and Richard, were the top U.S. hitmakers of the 1970's with 12 top 10 all time classics including many more songs in the top 40 and top 100 on the charts. This song "we've only just begun" reached #2 on the charts in 1970, following their recent number #1 hit "close to you" also in 1970. Karen Carpenter was only 20 years old at the time with the voice for the ages..

Karen Carpenter was a rare talent. There is another channel (Fil from Wings of Pegasus) who analyzes the songs. He compared her live voice against the studio version. Her live version was more accurate. She was also one of the top rated drummers of the period. She actually preferred drumming to singing.

KZbin has many videos on this brother sister duo so you can learn all about them. Next check out the quintessential Carpenters song, “Goodbye to Love”. Carpenter is their last name, by the way. They are Richard & Karen. “Goodbye to Love” has a serious fuzz tone guitar solo midway thru and at the very end thst you can rock out to.

They were siblings, Siblings! Richard and Karen Carpenter. Brother +4 and younger sister. It was 1970, that was the style. Sadly Karen died at the age of 32 from a heart attack brought on by Anorexia. They left a 14 year legacy of amazing music. It is a rabbit hole. The song started life as a bank commercial. When brother Richard arranged it, it became the wedding/graduation song of the 70’s. I was 14 in 1970 when I bought the album “Close To You” at Sam Goody Music Store, in NY. You do not need to cover the video of a Carpenters song. There are countless reactions out there and they stay put. Some recommended songs, look for the video with a bazillion views and you have the correct one. Close To You Superstar Goodbye To Love (this is a Power Ballad, the first one ever made) Top Of The World Rainy Days And Mondays That will get you going. Since this song was from 1970, I’m going to link a cover of it that was made in March. Yes 2024. No autotune, no pitch correction. Natural real music, in the spirit of how it was made back then. Jim Wilkas feat. Tori Holub; We’ve Only Just Begun (2024 Cover) Make sure to you see the credits at the end and do not block the video. No issues with it and it’s important to see it, as you will discover. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGqYnZmAptRsjLssi=dJ-E6Akm3u-EIYf3 .

This one was lyrics written by Paul Williams (Little Enos Burdett from Smokey and the Bandit). Hal Blaine on drums, Joe Osborn on bass (The Wrecking Crew studio band played all of the instruments except keyboards on this recording). Richard and Karen did their own harmonies. Karen was a good drummer but didn’t have the studio chops. Hal Blaine could come in, read the music, play his part and be done. When recording time is a hundred dollars a minute, time really is money.

FROM THAT LONG AGO FALL, OF 1970. I HAD JUST TURNED 24 Y/O. ----------RICHARD & KAREN CARPENTER WERE BROTHER & SISTER. RICHARD ARRANGED & PRODUCED, PLAYED PAINO, WROTE MANY OF THEIR FINEST MUSICAL PRODUCTIONS. ----------KAREN TRAGICIALLY DIED IN EARLY 1983, AFTER YEARS OF STRUGGLING WITH BOTH ANOREXIA& WITH BINGE--PURGE EATING , WHERE SHE WOULD INDUCE VOMITING USING SYRUP OF IPECAC. SADLY, CONSTANT USE OF IPECAC WILL KILL THE MUSCLES OF THE LEFT VENTRICLE OF THE HEART, & THAT'S WHAT KILLED KAREN, AT 32 Y/O. SHE DIDN'T SMOKE, DRINK, OR USE ILLEGAL DRUGS, BUT DAILY USE OF IPECAC SYRUP DESTROYED HER HEART. ---------IN HER EARLY YEARS, FROM '69 THROUGH '75, KAREN'S ALTO--CONTRALTO VOCALS SOUNDED EFFORTLESS. LATER RECORDINGS SHOW THAT HER VOICE LOST SOME OF THAT DEEP RESONANCE , BUT NO MATTER HOW ILL KAREN TRULY WAS, HER VOICE NEVER ----------EVER---------GAVE IT AWAY. RIP.------MJL, 77 Y/O

She was a drummer 1st and there is a KZbin Video of the college competition that they won as the ..Dick Carpenter Trio.. where she has a great drum solo but her voice isn't quite there yet.

Ah, now there's a connection you don't see made often. Indeed, one of the closest pop voices to Karen's is Gloria's. Their styles of course are very different, but if you hear Gloria on a ballad, you'll likely start thinking of Karen...another who can have that effect is Sharon Corr (of The Corrs); listen to her Take A Minute, it's strikingly reminiscent of Karen.

Richard and Karen Carpenter are a brother and sister singing team, Richard wrote a few of their songs; Richard primarily plays the piano, while Karen is a drummer. Karen didn't really like being out the front, and the stress didn't help with her initially undiagnosed eating disorder; a battle she continued to strive again and again, eventually succumbing to cardiotoxicity due to anorexia nervosa. A life cut way too short.

As an aside when speaking of carpenters, Bobby Darin had a great song "If I Was a Carpenter." Was a folksy, mid-60's song from a guy who was a "heartthrob"/jazzy guy in the 50-60s until his (also) early death. Might be worth a listen. He was a big, "sexy" star a-la Justin Timberlake (singer, actor, etc.). Kevin Spacey made a movie about him and ya might have heard a few of his tunes. 👍
