@15:35 "What even does that mean, a smurf?" A "smurf" is slang in money laundering for one person (of many other smurfs) who deposits a relatively small amount of cash (usually less than $10,000 which triggers a mandatory notification to the Treasury Department in the US) into a financial institution like a bank. Rather than a drug dealer trying to deposit $80,000 in cash into a bank, he pays ten people a small fee to each deposit $8,000 in accounts they have. They then later transfer the money to his account (often through multiple other intermediary accounts first to cloud the trail) in order to avoid triggering the Bank Secrecy Act reporting requirements for amounts over $10,000 in cash. By the time law enforcement gets wise to the activity and starts serving subpoenas for transfer records, the money is moved out of the country and all the accounts involved are closed (especially the last one where all the money recombined). Its a very basic type of money laundering activity and is not just used for drug money but also other crimes including boring old income tax evasion. I investigated drug trafficking and money laundering for 32 years before retiring four years ago. "Smurf" originates from the decades old cartoon by the same name which featured a bunch of almost identical little blue cartoon characters swarming around.

Thermals has 2 modes: white hot and black hot. The names explain themselves. Anything with heat will glow white or black and colder items will glow the opposite. A lot better than night vision in terms of seeing things in the dead of night. Super cool to see. Night vision has also evolved to white phosphorus in place of green phosphorus so instead of a green tint, it’s more of a white tint. Good movie. Good visuals. Good tension. Glad you reacted. 🎉
@Jay_Sullivan
@Jay_Sullivan 4 ай бұрын
That's not true. There are more than two types of displays of thermals, and not every thermal device has multiple modes. It's only better than NV at certain things. White phos is not necessarily an evolution but a choice.
@iAmMrBrandon
@iAmMrBrandon 4 ай бұрын
@@Jay_Sullivan what other modes are there cause I’ve never heard of anything other than white hot or black hot. I’ve also found white phosphorus to be 10x better than green. That’s from personal experience. You’re just able to see more.
@Jay_Sullivan
@Jay_Sullivan 4 ай бұрын
@@iAmMrBrandon , I haven't used anything but digital NV, but I prefer white phos in games. I have heard that some people prefer green. The human eye can see more shades of green. However, in trials, there wasn't a noticeable difference. For that reason, I consider it to be a choice based on preference and not a concrete upgrade. TV can be shown in Rainbow, which can be seen in the Tom Clancy games and "Predator." There are also a bunch of other modes, such as Iron, Cool, and Spectra. However, all of those modes are essentially identical to white-hot. There is another category that is separate from those. It has one of those modes, such as white-hot, but then it displays the hottest temperatures at a different hue, such as red. I think it can be set so that it shows the hottest temperature currently visible or so that anything above a user-defined temperature is shown in that color. Similarly, the same is done but for the coldest temp. There's another category that uses contrasting colors to make small changes easier to notice.
@iAmMrBrandon
@iAmMrBrandon 4 ай бұрын
@@Jay_Sullivan I totally forgot about the red version. Idk why I didn’t register that as thermals 🤣
@hYPERCUBEismus87
@hYPERCUBEismus87 3 ай бұрын
@@Jay_Sullivan In military application, it is most of the time only white hot/black hot for IR systems. In rarely cases red for the hot peaks. All the other modes are primarely in civil applications. We are better to differentiate multiple colors, but in a tactical hunting scenario it is easier to pick a hidden heat source out of the mainly black (white/hot) or white background (black/hot) The human eye get less tired and sees at night better in black/white than in black/green. Therefore they switched NV to white phosphor which is a whitish light blue. From the few personal experience I would argue to see less shades of green. The brightest green is still darker than white. This makes the scale from black to green arround 20% shorter than the scale you have from black to white.

A "smurf" is a term originally from the cartoon/comic "The Smurfs" (a race of tiny blue people who mostly look the same as one another). In the drug world a "smurf" is slang for members of a group of people sent into legitimate businesses to commit a crime (such as buying drug-making chemicals, or making a lot of illegal financial transactions) without being noticed or identified as criminals. Because there are so many of them, and they look so unremarkable, and their transactions are small (and otherwise legal, such as buying cold medicine from pharmacies in small amounts), they are often overlooked.

Fun fact: Night Vision Nerd Version Night vision goggles use phosphor, a substance that helps brighten the light in the goggles, and there are two kinds of it; White Phosphor and Green Phosphor. White phosphor is MUCH more expensive but makes the night vision so much more clear and gives the white and grey picture in the movie that’s so pretty. Green phosphor is less expensive and produces the kinda blurry green picture. Most night vision is green phosphor because it’s cheaper. The director is actually pointing that out in the tunnel scene because the Army “Delta” operators (special forces shooters) had white phosphor night vision goggles because the US military is funded so well and the government agents had green phosphor because federal agencies don’t get anywhere close to the same amount of money as the military. I thought that was a neat little inside nod to ppl with first hand experience with night vision.

Night vision amplifies existing visible and near infrared light. Thermals capture the infrared heat energy from objects and portray them as a color scale (Black hot, white hot, color gradient ,etc.) Night vision doesn't work in the absence of light or near absence without an outside light source like an infrared emitter, but often the moon and/or starlight can provide enough light that you can see pretty well in conditions that the human eye would fail at defining. Thermal can see in complete darkness, through smoke, fog, etc. It generally can't see through glass and water.

The last scene with Kate makes no sense. They don't let the participants critique or approve an operation when it is finished. The writer, Taylor Sheridan, apparently wants the audience to think that this entire operation was grossly unlawful. I think that is the reason for the scene. The only US law that we see broken is Kate's illegal entry back into the US through the tunnel and not at a Port of Entry. In addition, he would not fake her suicide that way. If he fired the gun her face would explode all over the room, but mosty on him probably causing injury from bone fragments propelled at very high speed. There would be a huge gap in the blood spatter pattern that would tell detectives that someone was right in front of her when the shot was fired.

So night vision will pick up what little visible light that is in the area and amplify it. That's visible light as well as some parts of the infrared spectrum, but still only light waves. Night vision is usually shown as shades of green. It technically be shown as any color but I believe they use green because it either allows for more shades or the color or because it does the least amount of activation of your rods and cones (eye stuff) so that if you took them off at night you wouldn't be completely night blind. Thermal optics will purely see all of the infrared spectrum through heat. That's why it looks different. The different colors indicated a difference in heat between that object and other objects around it. If you watch in the beginning of the tunnel sequence of the movie you'll see that the soldier's boot prints are visible. That's because there's still some radiant heat that he left on the ground (I think it was supposed to be the blood of the guy he just knifed that he was tracking on the bottom of his boot). It's also why it's so much clearer. Night vision depends on some visible light, or some kind of infrared light that's turned on. Thermal optics don't require any of that. Think of it kind of like the vision the Predator has in those movies. Even in pitch black thermal vision will pick up a person like they're on fire. Thermals are *usually* white and black. Most thermals you can switch back and forth so that hot objects either appear as white or as black. There are some thermals that use multiple colors to show different levels of heat. Those are less common but not totally uncommon. In the military they're starting to use vision that is combined. So they'll be using thermal vision as well as some software driven HUG indicators that outline different shapes. So it basically looks like a video game where every person and vehicle is given an outline. The software can also indicate who or what that outline is. There are some declassified videos of it on KZbin. It's some pretty trippy shit.

And also at 23:15 the reason it looks weird is because they’re trying to portray night vision when it’s green (NV is generally green or bluish black/white) and thermal imaging which is generally grey/black and white but can also be a rainbow of colors but basically there’s going to be more of a contrast between objects in view with thermal than with NV and also depending on the settings if it’s set to “black hot” then the hottest thing in view will be black or basically the darkest and it’s the opposite for “white hot” mode and then if it’s set to color then just taste the rainbow... Military, cops and civilians (it’s not really restricted here in the US just very expensive so not as many civilians or regular cops have them) will use both NV and thermal but you generally use one or the other, like you have thermals and you have NV so it’s generally one or the other but rarely both combined into one helmet mounted unit so it’s like pick one to use for both eyes or for instance a thermal unit for your left eye and NV unit for the right eye unless you want to drop minimum $10,000 usd (on the low end, way more for high end) for a unit that combines both for both eyes

kate had a right to be pissed at Brolin's character. he basically put her in a very dangerous position by what he did. it was a really sketchy operation legally and the fact that it's her name signing off on it means that not only could she lose her career but she could also be put in prison (if, say, the operation came under scrutiny by congress and they needed a sacrificial-lamb). but on top of all of that, now she has a target on her back with the cartels. they know she was involved so she will probably have to live the rest of her life looking behind her back for some hitman to come after her for revenge. Brolin's character was the kind of CIA type who uses people for their own gain, keeps them in the dark and then throws them away when done with them. Alejandro was just an assassin but interestingly, he must have had a soft spot for kate because it would have been in his best interest to kill her at the end and make it look like a suicide (after she signed the paper). leaving her alive was a bit of a loose-end for him

To the question if that is a place, yes, Chihuahua is a Mexican state in the north, bordering the US. Its capital is also named Chihuahua (well, Chihuahua City). The internationally probably better-known dog breed got its name from it, too.

At 12:00 in the interrogation he’s basically asserting dominance, in training for some of the US special operations guys (SEAL, Green Beret etc units) they’ll go through a more advanced SERE School than other forces (like there’s different levels to both) and SERE is basically how to avoid being captured if you end up alone and how to tough out interrogation if captured along with survival and escape skills etc and in at least the higher levels of SERE they will strip you naked and beat you and cause sleep deprivation n shit to try to make you crack and to prepare you for it all so I guess he’s literally doing a “dig bick” competition with the dude lmao
@StayProteus
@StayProteus 4 ай бұрын
Also I’m possibly mildly baked so I forgot to mention the main reason he did that is to also invade the dudes personal space which is also a way of asserting dominance in a interrogation and in SERE school when they strip you down I think they also do it then blindfold you and tie you up and together with other peers and or do it in confined spaces to mess with you more

I believe the general thought when they ask about family ties or relations of any sort, it's about a couple things - leverage on her if she has family and if she doesnt then who would care if she needs to go .. so to speak. They ask similar questions in the military, it's the sort if thing that can weigh in on you mentally like those who quit out early during training because being cushty with your family is easier than going through training or active warzones but hey if you're not capable or ready mentally it's a good thing you quit out, you need to be able to trust who you are with.

When a CIA case officer who used to be Delta tells you "it's going to be a good day" while smiling, you're either going to die within 36 hours, or a very high priority target is going to die by your hand in the next 36 hours 😂. There's no middle ground 😂.

Benicio DelToro is in the second film Sicario: Day of the Soldado which is also very good, different director. I would also recommend the film Traffic ( 2000 ) with DelToro, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones. Great film based on an English TV Series Traffik.

Some other great movies with Benicio Del Toro are Snatch, Traffic, and objectively one of the most insane movies ever, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas alongside Johnny Depp.

You have ‘Light Enhanced’ night vision goggles (NVG) that enhance whatever light there is. Good NVG’s enhance light 90.000 times and all in a green nuance. Then you have ‘Active Infrared’, where you have a physical source to light-up the object and you look through a camera and basically see things as if you had a regular flashlight, except this view would be in a red nuance. Then you would have a ‘Passive Infrared’ and you’ll need a ‘heat source’ in front of you and the IR is presented in White Hot or Black Hot or whatever color you choose. If you’re in White Hot it looks almost like Thermal. Thermal is usually somehow a bigger conception that a single man doesn't carry around because it’s too heavy. Thermal is worn by choppers, drones or, as in my case, in the gunsight of a tank. And why thermal over IR? Thermal is much more sensitive. You can see way longer and deeper. I was able to spot enemy soldiers ½mile inside a forest, 2 miles away in the twilight.

Great reaction to a great movie! You might also enjoy Colombiana (2011). Benicio del Toro: Excellent actor. He was also in the "Guardians of the Galaxy" arm of the Marvel films, Sin City, License to Kill, and (of course) The Usual Suspects. BTW, the reason they laughed during the line-up scene is because Benicio farted, and they just couldn't hold character. Repeat for something like 12 takes. This movie was directed by Denis Villeneuve. After completing Sicario, he directed Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, and the new Dune movies. All are highly recommended (but watch the original Blade Runner movie before 2049).
