Please make it easier for yourself and learn the 'J ' stroke when paddling. Will save a fair bit of effort through a day. Paddling on your right side, left hand on top, draw a capitol letter 'J' in the water with the blade by rotating your top (L) hand counterclockwise ( not clockwise as you do in the video) at the END of the stroke and same with the lower (R) hand. That draws the 'J' and make small adjustments to keep the nose of you boat straight. Easy and more efficient. Great to see you enjoying Canada. Good luck and stay healthy
@shawnlund4 ай бұрын
I’ve made this suggestion as well. At this point the fact that he is still doing a pry at the end of the paddle stroke indicates to me that he just isn’t all that interested in learning how to paddle.
@FromThePrairies4 ай бұрын
@@shawnlund or its been a while since he was here. This was all filmed in late spring/early summer. The reports of him rescuing the dog were weeks ago.
@Astromechy4 ай бұрын
I'm not sure if you are describing that correctly and I'm just missing it, or I'm confused about the process. The way I think of it is to draw a capital letter 'J' in the water, but only when you are paddling on the left side (right hand on top, left hand below and closer to the blade). It is (as I have understood it) a mirrored letter 'J' when paddling on the right side of the canoe. And, I tend to find the name of the stroke a bit misleading, in that it doesn't really form a "complete letter J", but the end of the stroke is more used as a rudder motion. In my mind, a "J" would have the person pushing backwards in the stream, so it is more like a "capital L". But, that's just the way my mind likes to think of the process.
@shawnlund4 ай бұрын
@@FromThePrairies it was weeks ago I suggested he learn the J stroke after he claimed it was too windy to paddle a canoe in a straight line. Honestly I would expect to see some progression in his paddling ability after weeks of paddling but he seems to be getting worse not better. Doesn’t matter to me how he paddles his canoe if I’m being perfectly honest.

@@shawnlundThis trip for me is about learning by doing. To start off not knowing too much, then through my own experience, adjust what im doing to suit. I can understand this would be hard to watch for an experienced paddler 😂😂 I read every comment, so I see all the advice I'm getting. Just understand that these videos are around 2 months behind real time. I love and appreciate all the comments! But if you read every one of them, you will see that 95%of them are people giving me advice. Although I appreciate it and I do take it onboard, it can also be overwhelming. The last thing I want to do is take away the authenticity of this trip, by doing what someone else says to do. For me, it's about learning and growing by physically doing it and experiencing it as its happening. I do want to stress!!! I do appreciate the advice, and i do take it onboard! 🙂

As an ex Animal Biologist and former backcountry Park Ranger in BC, I have encountered more Moose, cougars, and Bears from close up than i can count. They dont want to hurt you. Getting into a fight means there is a chance they will get hurt which could mean eventual death for them. Infection, broken bone etc. The only reason they would attack you is protecting their young, way too close, or if they are in pain, such as a toothache. Of course this is generally how it goes, it is the unpredictable nature of animals why we respect them and give them a wide bearth.
@Shoes4Life4 ай бұрын
The safety warnings are not about fear but about awareness. As a Canadian, many of us have the had opportunities to camp and experience all that nature offers. Giving wildlife space is important. All too many times you see tourists stopping along side of the highway and start crowding the animals, just to get a photo. Then if the bear charges at a human, now the bear is the problem and has to be either re-located or if it gets too aggressive, unfortunately the bear may be euthanized because it is deemed a threat. Humans need to do better. Let the animals be. If you happen to see them be safe and be smart. It is great that you got to see beavers, bear and moose! The Canadian trifecta! Enjoying the videos!

Fishing Tip, Hi Tom, I have river fished for Walleye for over 30 years, a good tip is whenever you see a Beaver house that means there is usually a deep pool right in front of it, this has also been a good spot to fish, just throw in a white or yellow headed jig with a chartreuse plastic wiggly on it, let it hit bottom and just slowly pull it along the bottom, or jig it along bottom.

I agree with not letting fear stop you from doing things, there are dangers everywhere. I am a city person, love to see the world, but in an urban environment. Less bears but there are cars, bad people etc... it's just about being intelligent and no putting yourself at risk and having the tools to get out of situations that will inevitably happen at some point 😊

Hey Kia ora Tom, Man, I was excited to view your latest video and see how things had gone for you, then when I read the title, Sick & Stranded, I thought, Oh no, this doesn't sound good for Tom. It's easy for your viewers to sit back and follow your endeavors along the river, including me from the comfort of our lounge or somewhere warm & dry, gotta give it to your bro, when times are down for you, you know you've got to battle on. But there are still laighs to be had from your videos, and you gotta keep that happening, not only for your sanity but to let us know that you're going to be ok.., Now, as for Beaver parties, well, you're lucky there were not Eager Beavers around, otherwise you may have been twice as sick lol. When I think about all that you are encountering on that river, I think about my kayaking fishing experiences out of the Whakatāne river into the BOP sea.- Been flipped out twice, towed around the Bay with a Mako shark on my line, & then to paddle out in the dark early morning hrs & experience bioluminescent coming off my paddle and my yak wake, that has always brought my sole up- Yours journey is next level enduro stuff, so hang tough, go hard brother. And remember, we're thinking about you too. 'Kia maia, kia kaha, kia manawanui- Be brave, be stout and be steadfast' keep that taonga/ Pounamu on you all the time too- Mauri ora Garyth from Whakatāne, Chur.

Nice one Tom. Unfortunate about feeling under the weather diarrhoea and all that. Thankfully didn't last long. Maybe the extended break was a blessing in disguise. I've just returned from my break and now recovering from my so called holiday. I know what you were saying about travelling in a straight line it makes the travel seem more longer than when you have turns is the river. It is the same as the highway driving. Having bends in the road you have more focus less tiring, but when straight you've nothing to focus on making the journey seem longer and more tiring. These longer videos are alright, but I think more stressful for you to produce. Looking forward to next video cheers mate

Having grown up in Alberta, and camped and hiked and canoed a little, my understanding is that most wildlife (bears, moose, etc., want to give humans a wide berth, but if you get in between a bear or moose mother and her cubs or calves, then they are extremely dangerous. As someone else here said, make lots of noise and keep food and anything with a strong scent, like perfumed toiletries or toothpaste, well away from your tent.

Respect bears and keep your distance, they will only mess with your camp if you leave food out but during the day they are not interested in you. Moose are only dangerous during rut (mating season) starting in October but during the summer be respectful, keep a good distance and your fine. Fish with a floating frog or mouse lure and you will have better fishing luck and way less snags. Hard to watch your paddling skills, talk to anyone on the river and get them to teach you J stroke and keep your hands off the gunnels when in rough water and the paddle neck should never touch the gunnels. The paddle will keep your canoe steady with the blade horizontal to the water like a slap down or in water both up and down. Good luck.

Alberta Canadian here. There have been a few bear attacks this year. They are the ones where you come across a mama bear and her cubs unexpectedly. She is doing what most Mom's would do and protecting her babies. So most attacks happen in the Spring when they have their babies. So if you are walking along trails you need bear bells or make noise all along your walk. There is no way a bear or a moose would attack you in the river unless you were right up to them and they see you as a threat.
