You REALLY need to play Infinity a few times. It's a game changer (pun intended). It's difficult for me to not compare every game's rules with Infinity, including RPG's, because of how innovative and realistic the gameplay is.
@owenglover417011 ай бұрын
I agree the Infinity rules are excellent. I started with the original beta pdf when the miniatures were quite cartoony. In recent years though, Corvus Belli have IMHO gone down a GW style marketing path by dropping certain troop types from the rosters making earlier troop options obsolete and “encouraging” players to buy the new shiny minis….
@8triagrammer11 ай бұрын
@@owenglover4170 Noooo, the legacy minis in Infinity are ancient. Besides, Corvus Belli made an official statement that any minis can be proxied as anything, as long as it's within reason, and made by Corvus Belli. So the old sculpts can still be used as proxies for new profiles.
@owenglover417011 ай бұрын
@@8triagrammer no, what I mean is troop profiles are dropped. I play Ariadne and loved the Paracommandoes but they dropped the grenade launcher weapon profile who I played as key to my team. That is just one example.

Ok and a 2nd comment, since it isn't connected to the terrain I mentioned in my first comment ;) Love your suggestions! If I may I would like to pitch TTCombats Carnevale. Yes TTCombat again - I just have a lot of good experiences with their terrain and games... Sorry this might be a bit longer ;) I do really like this game: Carnevale is end of the 18th century Venica caught in a never ending carneval, with large parts of Europe destroyed by a cataclysmic event that also allows magic to flow freely into our world. Think 18th century venice + Cthulhu. Why I think it is a great game to try: their (bigger) 2 player starter box isn't too expensive (relatively speaking for wargames - it is 65 pounds on their webstore) and contains: * 2 full gangs, that have enough point to play most of the scenarios in the big rulebook (15 resin minis, all in 1 piece, only need some cleanup and glueing to the bases to allow to get this to the table very easily). * resin gondola and a few gondola posts that can be use as scatter terrain (which is VERY important in carnevale, since you can parkour off smaller pieces of terrain) * The big gorgeous rulebook with lots of lore and 4 or 5 campaigns of 5 - 6 missions each (but each and every mission can also be played as a 1 off game, campaign play is an option, but not required) - sorry I don't have the book in front of me, but its a lot of content. * A thinner book with a learn to play tutorial campaign - but from my own experience even form the 3rd scenario in that book games feel like almost full games of carnevale and I wouldn't turn down replaying scenario 3, 4 or 5 from that campaign, eventhough those are technically tutorial scenarios. * templates, tokens and dice (props for them giving more then enough dice for 2 players, I haven't yet had to reroll any of them) * unit stat cards for the included units (these are actually obsolete now, since they did and overhaul, but if you keep to this box they are fine to use) * modular board that can be set up with double sided tiles * enough carboard terrain for a full Carnevale table (sligthly spares, but just enough for the bigger scenarios and more then is needed for smaller ones). Yes these buildings don't look great in pictures, but they look fine on the table in my opinion. It is a 2 player starter box that gives almost a "boardgame" vibe in the sense that you need nothing else to play Carnevale you get all you need in 1 box. And not a watered down version with forces that are too small, but full games with 100 ducats available. And the gameplay is fun: terrain matters a LOT, climbing, swimming, jumping (including parkour like chain jumps), falling, getting drowned all come up a lot. Decisions that are common in the game are often "push your luck" kind of decisions: I could do this "safely" without any skill check die rolls, or maybe take the shortcut, jumping onto the gondola, bouncing off it to reach the other side with less activations, but I'll have to roll jump checks and similar and might end in the waters of the canal. I could just attack them, or I could climb the nearby building and jump off, hitting them from above with a major bonus, but I might take falling damage if I fail a dex roll. And a bit of resource management: command points on more elite units allowing for unique abilities and out of sequence activations etc., but unspend command points are important for initiative, so use the wisely. And every unit has will points that can be used to ad extra dice into any die roll you want, but of course they are limited. And on top of that: if you aren't 100% sure if you would like it: TTCombat has the rulebook and all unit stats available for free online on their site (the rulebook has been slightly updated since this printed version came out, but the differences are relatively minor, but the only version has less scenarios, and less lore so there is still use for the big book): ttcombat.com/pages/carnevale-resources

Great video. Have a look at Conquest The Last Argument of Kings from Para Bellum Games. This is my jam for the last 3 years now. There is 8th faction coming in March, even though it's rank&file mass battle system it plays really fast with alternative activation giving zero down time. It also has skirmish variant called First Blood and it's played by same models. Never looked back :)
@retardedfishfrogs111 ай бұрын
No hate on the game, it's just I never thought there'd be a wargame even more expensive than 40k.
@Ulverbite11 ай бұрын
@@retardedfishfrogs1this I find it hard to believe. Conquest has free rules, free army lists, free app and accessible and playable 2k points army bundles. Also game is well balanced so no need to buy new models with each book to follow the warehouse stockpile. I played AoS before and it costed me lot more to stay on top.
@retardedfishfrogs111 ай бұрын
@@Ulverbite Maybe it's just the entry point that's too high. I remember a few years back the starter set was pretty affordable at around 75€ where I'm from, but now even the skirmish starters are running in the hundreds range. Sure if I don't need anything else but a starter box it would be cheaper but dropping 150€ in a single mini purchase is more than I've ever done. Also most single kits cost maybe 20 or so percent higher than any AoS kits of the same nature i.e. infantry, cavalry etc. Quick edit, I just checked and 2000pt boxes run up to 650€ Another edit: did a quick round up and my kharadron overlords 2000pt army cost around 350€. Might be just the nature of it but it's still 40 models with 3 ships.
@Ulverbite11 ай бұрын
@@retardedfishfrogs1 it's up to 629€ for the W’adrhŭn bundle but to be fair with that KO comparison, you should compare it to (elite, low model count) Old Dominion 2000 pt army which is 400€, you then add up GHBs (€40.00/season), Battletome (€42.50) every few years and it is easily matched and even exceeded. It is also worth mentioning that Conquest infantry box comes with 12 models and in bigger scale (38mm). I am not saying Conquest is cheap but your argument Conquest being more expensive than 40k is not a correct estimation in my opinion.
@retardedfishfrogs111 ай бұрын
@@Ulverbite Yeah I agree I never consider the books since I ☠️ that stuff. Thing is to me AoS and 40k are already obscenely expensive and Conquest modelwise is even more so. I'm also not entirely fair since I built my Kharadron army over 5 years back when you could get a Start Collecting box for 60-65€. I imagine it's going to cost about what that Conquest army is now. My main issue with Conquest is there isn't a cheapish way to try it, that's why I feel pretty bad for missing that 2 player starter box years ago.

This year I want to try getting Dead by Lead to the table to scratch my Western itch, Horizon Wars: Midnight Dark for my 6mm Sci-Fi combined arms fixation, and Deep, Abandoned because it looks like a very interesting spin on a dungeon crawler.

The genre has shifted to where smaller scale skirmish size is finally ok to be popular. Almost everyone is creating a space for it: OPR, KillTeam (the only GW game I will even humor at this point… ), SW Legion - skirmish size, Deadzone (amazing), Infinity (Code One for starting off), Shatterpoint/MCP, and the list continues. One game I’m waiting for even just information on is what Mantic is going to do with the HALO game they are making. I’m excited to see people like yourself and Ash start games up like Gamma Wolves and BattleSpace. Which miniatures are you currently using/recommending and are there affordable options for terrain outside of making stuff at home? Congrats and your “not sales pitch” got you another order for the book. 🤓 🍻

@S0nyb1ack11 ай бұрын
If I may put down a suggestion: its not a 100% replacement for necromunda (it really depends on what exactly you like in necromunda), but the mini agnostic game "The Doomed" published by Osprey is fantastic, IF you don't mind it being on the lighter side - though that might help with finding somebody to at least give it a shot, even the very first learning game of this is easily done in under 1 hour. The campaign rules are some of the most fun (to me personally) that I've ever read and I'm still trying to bribe my wife to try to start a campaign with me :D Setting wise it is pretty open for interpretation (by design), but the default idea is "the company" landing on a world, kickstarting their technological development and then dissapearing, running away when they notice that the world is dieing (it is "doomed"), leaving the residents to their fate. It gives a post apocaliptic/sci fi feeling, but can also be mixed with some fantasy elements (especially one faction suggests medieval knight, but with sci fi weapons for the higher ranking ones, but of course the book also tells you to toss away flavour and make it your own if you so desire - kitbashing and creativity are very encouraged). I think necromunda gangs have the potential to fit some of the factions nicely out of the box (again it feels more post-apo then fantasy by a mile) Gameplay wise the game is very fast - 1 match is done in 30 - 45 minutes! With a ton of scenarios - they are randomly generated by rolling a mission and a horror (36 different mission and 36 different horrors), which is an NPC kind of monster roaming the map killing everybody, which can lead to some semi-coop play where it is in both sides interest to get rid of it. Additionally the player killing it can harvest it and has unique equipment available for later in the campaign representing what they could mac gyver out of the parts of the beast (a horror that spits acid might lead to the option of an acid gun made with the help of its acid glands). And of course it has the standard campaigns stuff with wounds (or deaths) of downed characters, promotions of veterans etc. It actually doe a decent job at giving somebody at least some sense of progress even if they loose a mission (e.g. if they accomplished at least a bit (damage the main horror by destroying 1 or more of its nexuses) they'll get rewarded by having more recruitment points for later missions, since they will have more renown) Campaign finishes are especially unique: it might be a player gaining enough prestigue so that they can end the campaign by selecting what their factions ultimite goal is, selecting the final mission (unique scenarios that can't be rolled randomly), where they try to realise their agenda (but the other player gets one last chance at stopping them) - e.g. maybe they'll select the scenario that'll make their faction rule the planet, or the one where they will try to enable an old crashed space ship to escape the cursed world, etc. - there is about 5 of these endings for them to choose from and the missions play out very differently. Alternatively it can happen that a doom comes to quickly and the big finale is both players cooperating in staving of the doom, for the planet to continue to live (for now), which gives another 6 or so unqiue endings (depending on which doom comes). Oh - scenarios (except the finale ones) - can be played as one of games as well and are still fun, BUT I think the game really shines with a campaign ;) It has a very unique movement mechanism that further cuts down game time: no measuring needed, but also no hexes or grid ;) (though it does require dense terrain to work) Biggest flaw: it is very light, again not necessarily a flaw by itself, but it might not be for everybody. Best recommended for more of a beer and pretzel crowd I think :)
