In 1995 I was in middle school, and found a local game store that sold GW stuff among other things, I was into X-men comics and cards, and had started getting into MTG a bit heavier and playing it... wish I hadn't given away all my MTG cards in the early 2000s as I had a bunch from the first 3 or 4 sets and also the expansions up through the late 1990s...some of the early stuff would have been worth a bit years later. In 1996 I got into Warhammer and got the 5th edition starter set... ended up trading the Brettonian models to someone from the store to get their set of Lizardmen, and collected a Lizzardmen army. That store closed and I didn't really have people to play with any more, but I don't remember Mordheim being a thing then. I got back into wargaming and minis about 2005 or 2006 with Warmachine as Mk2 was coming out, and 40K 4th ed was ending so I got some models and waited for Prime Mk2 and then got the 40K Black Reach set to start 40K(2 sets actually)... Would love to see GW try another Mordheim as I'm more into skirmish sized games right now, but not really AoS... but I also see why some folks want them to leave it alone, so maybe a rerelease of a new rulebook, some new models, but leave the game and it's rules mostly alone....or not even changed at all... just a reprint, a new starter with some terrain releases maybe, and new models...

l am a big fan of OPR... played 40K from late 4th edition until 6th/7th edition...and Kill Team in some of it's earliest incarnations as well as the 2018 boxed game and Elites expansion. I really tired of chasing the 40K rules books and changes, and the new 2021 version of Kill Team didn't appeal to me. In the last few months I have however been tempted to try out the newest version of Kill Team, and might go ahead and give it a go. Have you ever considered the Kill Team game from GW?

So, LotR battle game has been around since around 2001 or 2002. I picked up the very first box set about that time on my way to Korea. It was out before the second movie even hit theaters (first box was a handful of men, elves from the prologue battle; and a horde of goblins from Moria... Yeah, but it was cool regardless). I'd have never gotten into any other GW game without it. My sons just picked up the game, and the mass army game War of the Ring (which was sitting on my shelf for years collecting dust). Fortunately, I have a resin 3D printer. Because I'm not worried. I gave up on GW long ago in favor of papercraft vehicles, aftermarket, or 3D printed miniatures.

If it's cultural appropriation for a white kid to play a ninja in D&D, then isn't it cultural appropriation for a black kid to play a knight? The answer to both is "no". All of this nonsense is about marketing. If you're black or female ( untapped buying markets to WoTC ) the message is that "You always wanted to play D&D but those old white men wouldn't let you"! "Now is your chance, go buy..I mean play because they can't stop you anymore"! The worse part is they know what it was like to be a gamer back then. They could have have given us our flowers at last. They could have called us heroes in a way for keeping the game alive despite heavy social pressure. But we're back to being the equivalent of Devil Worshipers. They chose to do that to us. Again. Basic had your Race as your class if not human! 1E had no skills! 2E added skills, specialty priests and Kits(like a subclass)! 1E and 2E gave each race a list of classes and levels for that class achievable by that race! Humans could dual class, while non humans could multiclass! Each class had their own XP chart, a 2nd level mage had the same XP as a level 3 thief! 3E created a lot of the systems that other WotC D&D versions still use! 4E was the MMO style edition! D&D like most of the original TTRPG's were played by us Freaks, Geeks and other people that didn't fin in normal society which included people that are now the LGBTQIA+! Halfraces basically included Elves, Dwarves, Elemental(Genasi), Upper Planar(Aasimar) and Lower Planar(Tiefling)! 42 years of TTRPG experience! My favorite TTRPG's and systems: 1-Cypher(generic), 2-Teenagers From Outer Space(anime), 3-Gamma World 4E(not based on D&D 4E)(post apocalyptic), 4-All Flesh Must be Eaten(zombie), 5-Battlelords of the 23rd Century(sci-fi), 6-Pathfinder 1E(fantasy), 7-5E(fantasy), 8-Palladium system(generic), 9-AD&D(fantasy), 10-Shadow of the Demon Lord(sci-fantasy/horror) and 11-Star Frontiers(sci-fi)

Politicization within the framework of D&D is part of its core. The issue I perceive with the current move to alter D&D is that people who doesn't care for the franchise change it to align with external politics and personal morality. D&D can be played as your own smorgasbord of political and ideological pandering and strictly mechanically with little narrative embellishment and characterization. One case in point where I disagree with the current change in D&D is the slow move away from races (Mechanically) and make them a kind of flavor. I've played ADnD, 2nd edition, 3d edition, 3.5th edition, 4th edition, and 5th edition (Which is where the move away from hard coded races begun in earnest after Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything). Now "race" is called "specie" and you pick your origin. A nice idea, if it was paired with hard coded races and added origin as a tack-on. Since D&D's conception race were a way to allow players make characters distinct from others mechanically and superficially, to force players to mind strengths and weaknesses. It is fun to play a orc Wizard or a dwarven rogue because their races isn't tailored for these classes: it's a challenge and it provides inspiration for RP. PS: They are races because they can interbreed. The moment two different 'races' can't interbreed with one another they are separate species.

@@Grogeous_Maximus yeah it feels like he hasn't been paying attention to the real world for like 10+ years. I'd also assert that lumping the inclusion part of the left and the alt-right/far right together is a false equivalency that tends to justify racism and bigotry. Does the player that plays as a thief who keeps stealing from their party, ( in game,) need to leave because somebody finds that to be toxic. What about the guy who plays as a murder hobo, should he be kicked out. Or is the term toxic just applied to those who don't adhere to a certain worldview or ideology.

Time stamp 24:06. Gary gygax and Dave arnison. Actually didn't create the d&d world that everyone knows and loves. Gary gygax created the grayhawk setting. The original d&d setting that pretty much nobody nowadays knows about. The setting that everyone nowadays knows about is the forgotten realm setting. And that was created by the Canadian Ed greenwood at the age of 6 years old and then he sold the rights to the forgotten realms after he graduated from college if I remember correctly. So no Gary and Dave did not create the world that we all know and love. Ed greenwood created the world that we all know and love.
@axel8406Ай бұрын
That is an illogical argument. Without dave and gary, ed would have never created the setting in the first place. Also most of tye oldschool grognards played the greyhawk setting. Just because 5e used the faerun setting as tye base setting doesnt mean anything. Especially since most groups play in their own created settings, using other settings for inspiration and resources.
@mikeyrambo2742Ай бұрын
@axel8406 Actually your argument is completely illogical. Gary and Dave. Have absolutely nothing to do with why Ed greenwood. Created the forgotten realms. Ed greenwood started writing the forgotten realms. When he was 6 years old. Before d&d was ever created after his mother died. As a coping mechanism. That's why he became an author. D&d just happened to come out. When he was older and. It just happened to be something that he was interested in. And it just happened to be something that he added. Into his dragon magazine articles. That just so happen to be looked at by someone. And then bought by him as a setting. In like the second edition. It's been out for way longer than 5E. And even if dungeons & dragons didn't exist. The Forgotten Realms still would have existed. Because as I already stated. Edd greenwood started writing the forgotten realms. When he was a child after the death of his mother at the age of 6. Before d&d was even created. Additionally Gary and Dave are obviously the OG's and I never said that they weren't. I was just specifically talking about the setting that is most well known which is the forgotten realms which was not created by Gary and Dave It was created by Ed greenwood. Who's still to this day makes videos on his KZbin talking about the forgotten realms.
@axel8406Ай бұрын
@mikeyrambo2742 your missing the point where no one would care about the forgotten realms if there was no D and D. Education is great at world building but you can't just assert that his literary works would have gained fame or acclaim on their own. You are just trying to erase the importance of greyhawk and it's creators with a poorly thought argument.
@mikeyrambo2742Ай бұрын
@axel8406 actually no you're incorrect I am not at all in any shape or form trying to erase anything that Gary and Dave accomplished before their fallout. I am specifically stating about a specific setting. And I never said anything about popularity or fame. Now you're the one who is assuming things. I simply said that the forgotten realms would still exist even without Gary or Dave because it already did. The second that 6-year-old boy named Ed greenwood put pen to paper for the first time. The world was created. That's how writing works. You don't have to publish things to the masses in order for something to be created. As a self-published author and game designer myself. I find your comment to be very insulting.

I think the article has some undue criticism of what has been pointed at, but some genuine criticism does come in when you read some of the really old monster descriptions. Th original ork description was pretty racist when seen through modern understanding. That has since been backed off, and the creators were a product of their time and they both improved as people over their lives, they learned and made changes to undo those mistakes. I think it speaks to their character that they were willing to grow beyond their own ignorant views and misunderstandings. I don't know if their depictions were racially motivated or if it was just a marketing decision or if they didn't understand what that impact would have, they have grown past that. Hopefully this gives some perspective on the history of the game and it's creators.
