Sid is totally correct. If Mitch with his NTC can be traded that will help the Leafs in different ways. Unless Marner and Tavares can take pay cuts then it's time to move on. A different coach also would make a difference. Tocchet and Roy is the type of coach that players would be held more to account.

What the Leafs should do: - no deadline additions. Sell if some other team makes an offer crazy in the Leafs favor. The Shanahan/Dubas plan can show results or die this year, with this group. Years of musical chairs re-arranging the supporting cast around the core 5 and no results. Lets see it work, or not work, once and for all. - don't fire Keefe before the season is over. Don't give this group any excuses like "oh, the coaching change was disruptive, that's why we failed again this year". He has failed to make this team accountable to the degree it is now, he can suffer the result to season's end - If they don't make it to the finals, fire Shanahan & Keefe. There's always coaches available after playoffs. I've never been able to figure out why Shanahan is even needed, his position is redundant and unnecessary, like Treliving is the GM and Shanahan is the 'Extra-special GM"? It's like Shanahan wanted to be GM, but didn't want the scrutiny and accountability that comes with that, so he invented his current baffling position of super special team president GM. Resulting in the current unclear power structure and cloudy diffusion of accountability, for example everyone wondering if Shanahan is forbidding certain trades, or forbidding benching certain players. Scrap it, lets have 1 GM reporting to owners, clear accountability on the GM like every other team in the league. - tell Marner the team is done with him, he has to go. That he's great, nothing personal, we just can't afford him and want to use his salary for upgrades at goalie and defense. Give him these options: He can 1) sign a new deal without a no-trade clause, understanding that the Leafs intend to trade him, or (2) agree to a trade and let that team sign him, or (3)spend the next season in the press box. And not sitting comfortably at home with his wife and dog either. In this scenario he travels around with the team, works his ass off in practice, and sits in the press box. Seriously. Tell him it's agree to a trade, or press box for the season. If he wants to be stubborn, burn the bridges and announce publicly it is trade or press box for him, and he's played his last game as a Leaf. Trust me, he will not spend a season not playing and feeling humiliated on a nightly basis, he will agree to a trade once him and his agent realize the Leafs have locked him out of the house for good. It's too bad Dubas put us in position we would have to do bare-knuckle negotiations like that, but business is business and no-favors negotiation is a concept well understood by Marner and his agent. Brutal as it would be, it would work and as a bonus it would give notice the Leafs weaksauce contract negotiation approach is over, which would help in the future. - Over the summer, remove the C from Captain Quiet and give it to Matthews. It's time.

Anyone that doesn't respond to him either, can be gotten rid of with more certainty. Very well said. Sid’s perspective was spot on as well. Too bad Rosey wasn’t there. My only add. Played college football and grown man beer league hockey. I tried harder when my adrenaline was pumping. Someone make me look like a pylon? My next shift was a tornado. Hitting moving and chasing. Shinny is what the leafs play. The leaf slot is like the Gardner expressway. Benoit is a sub par Dman. But he’s the only guy willing to give it back. Mathew’s would be a good C but once in a while hack someone who gets in your grill. Stamkos is half his size and is much tougher. Crosby learned quickly. God help us. So much promise no delivering on those promises.

- The time to split up the core 4 was 2 to 3 years ago. With the salary cap - the Leafs cannot be so wasteful as to overpay these forwards. It really is impossible to fairly secure & pay other necessary skilled Leaf players - who are capable of balancing the soft playoff core 4 forwards within a cap system. - As they playoff disappoint - it remains fun & interesting to follow the Leafs & Leaf fans.😀So I expect another 5 years of this Leaf core 4 with more playoff disappointments.

More likely direction is them not making the playoffs the next 5 years. They mortgaged their future by trading away their draft picks for players to help them win today (each of the last few years). Now the tank is empty and they don't have the player resources of any average team. I cant believe Sid is saying all of this and I agree with him. The one thing I don't agree with is that this new guy coming in to replace Tanenbaum is going to fix anything. I don't care how good this guy sounds or acts. He's just modern management. The competency crisis, which is an epidemic everywhere in the west today, (see Covid, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Israel & Gaza, Boeing, electric cars, green energy, the US border, pharmacology, global warming hysteria, boys and girls are actually girls and boys, etc.) was foreseen in 1941 by James Burnham in The Managerial Revolution. His next book was called Suicide of the West. Notice that physics has made zero progress in 75 years. I can't get my car fixed today. Nobody has any bloody idea how to do anything nowadays. Our society has become so incompetent that I expect a time when the electricity goes off and never comes back on. I'll bet this Tanenbaum replacement has to phone his wife when he gets a flat tire to figure out what to do. No joke. This is what has become of our advanced civilization. University brainiacs that build castles in the sky. And this was predicted in agonizing detail 100 years ago. Vegas has a single owner. Not some corporation that dropped in a managerial wunderkind. When shanahan was branded as president, I thought he was going to make this team into a bruising hard leaf team built around the young talent he inherited marner matthews and nylander. I thought that because of the player he was while playing. I gotta say shanahan has robbed the city of Toronto all these years…appointing dubas over Lou or even hunter. We both thought wrong. I also thought Keefe would coach a rough style as he was a rough style player on rough teams that won. I saw him win the ohl championship with the Barrie colts and that team was loaded with grit to the core. He went in to play a bit for Tampa and stayed physical. But what I didn't realize is that every player he had the opportunity to develop in the Marlies ended up with zero grit and when he joined the leafs legitimately any player who was brought up or even brought to the team with grit lost that under Keefe and he has never said go out and do something or you'll be benched even tho he holds that power and is the only coach to not use it.

I said the moment MLSE announced the hiring of a CEO taking effect in April that this was going to be the end of how things were done in the past. Look to see a new direction this summer. Some key pieces to watch: Shanny, Marner, Keefe, JT. Miracles do happen in the playoffs, but with this current roster, it will take a miracle. We have some good pieces to build from, but some VERY BAD contracts that hamstring us from building a bonafide cup contender.

I couldn't disagree more with Sid's assessment on Marner. It's one of the reasons I'd always seen him as the odd man out when it comes to trades and reconfiguring the team's makeup. But in this clip, I didn't hear selfishness. I hear real growth. I hear him being inspired by watching his teammate bounce back from adversity; from the feeling that everybody is against you. I hear him taking tangible steps to focus on what he can control, which is accepting accountability for poor performances and stretches, and recognizing that he's still capable of performing at the highest level of hockey; just like Sammy has done after it seemed like his career was finished. This is something that we as fans need to be nurturing and supporting, because when Mitch is on, holy hell is it special. The kid's still only 26 and I know that windows to win a championship are short, but emotional maturity can take time. Seeing him redirect his energy into "we need to be better. I need to better. Sammy saved us," I think is a hugely important transformation in his approach and development. So great fucking work Mitchy. Keep at it. We need you at your best to have any chance at all of winning a cup this year. Also interesting note on the Keith Pelley signing as MLSE CEO. It'll be interesting to see whether he holds on to the Shanaplan.

Sorry to burst everyone's bubble point the finger at forwards (obvious) but the Leafs have been entering the playoffs 2nd best in the most important position on the ice (goaltending) and they will again. Every single year. Followed by defense #2. Until they find a keeper that can carry the team and a defence that can properly insulate won't matter what is going on with the forwards it won't be good enough come playoff time. Vegas won the cup last year without one player in the top 40 in scoring (see LTIR management) This year, before injury - Eichel was on pace for a top 20 & he is their only 10M player. The model in this league has never been top heavy contracts, & never will be. Has never been non contact pond hockey. At this rate we will see cups in Seattle & Arizona before this management team learns from there mistakes. To quote Einstein...the definition of insanity is doing the same things over & over and expecting different results. Its time to get rid of Shanahan before this trade deadline.

ShanaPLAN Shanahan has been there for over 10 years. What has he accomplished? From my perch, here in Ottawa, he hired and he fired but along the way they were rewarded for failure with high draft picks. The fsns now celebrate just making the playoffs and lose yheir minds getting into the 2nd round (to get bounced quickly). How has ShanaPLAN Shanahan's hand picked GM performed? What contribution has his 3 brilliant signings made? 2 are eating up $7m and they can't play anymore!!! Did the Prez watch the trainwreck in Calgary?! There are key players who do not mind losing and it shows. The Defence is pourous, the supporting lineup is awful and the goaltending unreliable. The Leafs aren't close to a winning the Prize but ShanaPLAN Shanahan is safe year after year. The health of an Organization is measured by the performance of the Team in the Bigs AND the team in the Manures. IF that is true, the Leafs are in trouble.

Marner has to go for a top 1st line Dman and maybe a little extra as well.. We screwed the pooch with the Nylander extension and can NOT repeat that with Marner. Our core is the most soft, silver spoon having guys in the league IMO.. MLSE wont let their be big consequences for the "core" guys, mech sales are booming and they have the highest ticket prices in the league.. Have not won a cup in almost a generation and still somehow manage to have the most valuable team in the NHL. Nothing about what happens and is happening in leaf land makes sense, ever.. But as long as the money keeps flowing in, we will never see anything change for the better. There is not enough room in Toronto for the ego's in that locker room. Lastly, the leafs are not a team, they are individuals

The only player i can see taking some sort of pay cut is Tavares. Not saying he will, but he strikes me as more likely tha Marner. I like Mitch, but if trading him allows the Leafs to get more depth (like an actual productive 3rd shutdown line and a D man or two) I'm all for it.

This is a mess, we can all see it and have done for years. How can you expect your footsoldiers to give it all when they're fed table scraps after the C-4 have been paid? The C-4 don't play physical, they are heartless, Tavares is NOT a captain. A team...A TEAM cannot be built with four guys being paid and the rest getting what is left. I totally agree with Mitch Marner! The press in Toronto are a HUGE part of why the Leafs problems. Granted we all want the Cup, but the Toronto media constantly criticize and berate our team every day. What kind of fan base are we when we hardly ever support the team except when they’re winning. I know the money they make puts a big target on their backs, but we’ve seen some great hockey over the past few years. It sucks they can’t do anything in the playoffs, but let’s cheer them on.
