If you pay one player too much, the team doesn't have enough cap space to get talented players who can help you win it all.

Only 1 team wins the cup a year … most teams that follow your “team friendly” formula STILL don’t even sniff the cup / I’m not saying that the contract he signed is ideal for anyone but himself - but your logic isn’t 100% realized for ultimate success

@@MyWordsReignSupreme While your point is 100% valid, it is still true that whoever does win the cup absolutely had a good cap situation recently. None of them had bad cap salaries on the entire roster. None of them. Which means having bad contracts on the roster is definitely a detriment to winning a cup. I think the Sabres and Devils are in the best positions to win many cups in the next 8 years because their cap situations are so favourable. They might not win - there's never a guarantee, which is why i agree, but you also have to admit their odds of winning over the next 7-8 years are extremely high. It's much easier to win when all of your stars sign for 7-9 million instead of 12+. Even Dahlin's contract at 11, which is the only outlier, is kind of a steal long-term considering he's a monster of a defensemen. Other than Cale Makar, who would rather have for the next 8 years? I can't think of anyone that wouldn't bottom out at the tail-end of their deal.

So explain why 5 more years (4 of which are this contract) at that price is a bad thing? Cuz another 2-3 seasons of 50 goals or more is worth that price. @@vintagejoehill When trying to build a cup contender, that contract for that short of term for that high a cap hit hamstrings them, considerably. We've already seen it with the current deals. And what are they left doing. Trying to scrape the bottom of the barrel trying to sign old vets for the minimum or seeing what rentals they can get at the deadline. And thus, they can't get a legit top-tier blueliner or a solid goaltender. Sid is right. Instead of wanting to build a team that wins a cup, the Leafs are more concerned about keeping Auston Matthews and having good regular seasons. It's going to be the same with Marner and probably with Nylander. So once again, 3 forwards will eat up a majority of the teams' cap. But hey, at least they're exciting. That's what matters, right?

Obviousky you're not resigning everyone but you need the money to replace those guys and they are costly to begin with. So if he plays like a top 3 player in the league he is asking for north of 15million a year. Goodluck operating that with a 12-13mill Marner and 10-11mill Nylander as well. The teams depth will be atrocious unless they randomly find gems at less than 3 mill a season. Which again Goodluck. Would you prefer that Toronto throws the last seven years of chemistry building in the garbage, changes the core players, and risks setting themselves back three, four, five seasons? You're being silly and hyperbolic... just like loudmouth Sid who's just trying to get clips and clicks. Toronto will have Matthews for a minimum of twelve years right up to the end, or close to the end, of his prime. If the Leafs haven't won a cup in the next five years, at least they'll have the option to move on from Austin. Let's say that he did sign that extra four years, and his play goes into significant decline for whatever reason. Everyone in Toronto would be pissing and moaning like they are right now about Tavares's cap hit. If they choose to resign Matthews at thirty one years old, there's no way he'll get a raise in cap percentage. Tavares will be making half or less of his current salary in a couple seasons if they resign him, and maybe they don't even sign Nylander after this season. So knock it off about "the core 4"! How long did Ovy and the Caps take to get their cup? Ten years? Very soon, more salary cap will be allocated to our defence. What's the point in being so negative before the season has even started!?

What happens if that wrist blows out, or we have another injury that reduces his productivity? Leafs hold the bag for 8 years. Sid, this is a good deal. Sid hit the nail on the head. It's basic economics what he's saying. If you lock up a star at 13 mil over 8 years compared to 13 mil over 4 then a subsequent 16 over 4 (guessing at numbers here), that's an additional 3 mil a year you have to play with. The writing is on the wall. Arizona will have a new arena in place in 5 years when this contract expires, which everybody knows is home to Matthews. Do you not think he'll be heading home on his next contract when the team (Coyotes) will look at finally marketing a winning team with a bona fine superstar in a new building. I understand the cap is projected to go up, and the Leafs could have that extra 3 mil at the time this contract expires, but why handcuff yourself. It's clear to me as well that this is a don't lose a marketable Matthews market rather than. A win a cup market. The longer this drought goes on, the more the payoff in the end. Maybe this year is our year. No better way to drive up profits than get close, but not win.

Auston went the Basketball route essentially and not the old model of term that nhlers are still using. Logic used to be get as much term as you could because “job security” so to speak. Put in a solid year or two get a big deal and sit back and didn’t really matter how you perform/got hurt once you got your deal. Nba players prefer the short term “bet on myself” approach where they’ll sign 2,3,4 year deals for the monster payouts knowing/betting they’ll still be healthy and prime to get a second and even third big deal because of the short terms. Bron signs two year deals all the time and renegotiates after the first year. Curry is after signing two 4 year deals worth hundreds of millions each instead of one 8 year where potentially after that deal he’s be getting a smaller “old guy” deal. You need stars to win Sid that’s why there’s so much emphasis on making sure he stays put.

Sid is 100% right here - the Leafs will never win by caving to their players’ demands like this. I wonder who the only other person is that Sid makes reference to that shares the same opinion as him on the contract length - I think it’s Bryan Hayes from TSN overdrive that keeps beating the same drum (and both Sid and Bryan are right). The bigger issue is that Matthews has no jam - no grit to standup and get in Brad Marchand’s face when he trips Timothy L. And sends him crashing into the boards… Mitchie is the same..: Johnny T is the same… Billy Nylander is the same… if the NHL had an award for “nicest team in the NHL” the Leafs would win that every year, with no contest. So that brings up another point that Sid suggested that he’s right about - what IS the goal here for the Leafs, MLSE? Is it to win a Cup?? I really don’t think so. I think the MLSE board members (let’s all em “boardies”) will be happy to win a Cup… but they don’t demand a Cup. As long as TV ratings are what they are for the Leafs, and the corporates keep putting butts in those expensive seats at Scotiabank Arena… then that’s good enough. If the Leafs somehow win a Cup, MLSE boardies are happy. If the Leafs don’t win a Cup and go quietly in the 1st or 2nd round, MLSE boardies are still ok with it I guess. Why else would Brendan Shanahan, who didn’t play nice guy hockey in his day, condone putting this “nice” group of players on the ice, with 4 nice guys eating up so much of the cap?? It’s because MLSE is ok with this. It’s the only explanation. Auston got his money..: Wee Willy Nylander will get his… and eventually so too will Mitchie… Johnny T will mercifully retire to free up that 11 M - can you believe 11M for this guy????? Who is not fit to be a captain????. End result - as long as the Matthews-Marner-Nylander trio is in place eating up $36 M between them, then it’ll be the same result in April. Out quietly in the first/second round… even though Matthews would have scored like 70 goals with 100+ points and Mitchie and Billy Nylander have great offensive regular season stats too. A regular season team that wilts in the playoffs. That’s what coming in April 2024, 2025, 2026, 2027, 2028. Get used to it. Believe it or not - I am a Leaf’s fan… but the writing is on the wall. I would love to hear somebody tell me why I am wrong in this assessment.
